Diving Maldives 19 November 2021 | World-class diving: Manta Point & Furana South!

This video features the dive sites Manta Point and Furana South. Both dive sites are easy to reach from from the Capital Malé and Hulhumalé, where I stayed while diving in the North Malé Atoll.

With colorful coral, deep wrecks and feeding manta rays, the North Malé Atoll is a diving wonderland. This atoll is home to the most visited dive sites in the Maldives and famous for its variety of species. Many of the reefs are extremely healthy and provide shelter for a ton of marine life. Frogfish, moray eels, nudibranchs, schools of fusiliers and hundreds of other colorful fish species reside here.
It is not uncommon to see manta rays, whale sharks, hammerheads, hawksbill turtles, grey reef sharks and eagle rays on occasion. Wherever you dive in the North Malé Atoll, you are sure to be astounded by both the variety of environments and species you encounter in just a few dives.
Manta Point is a seasonal dive site on the southeastern side of North Malé Atoll and in the final months of the south-west monsoon season, which runs from May to November, Manta Point truly comes alive. The dive site takes its name from the manta cleaning stations that are located here.
The dive site is a gently sloping reef that has three cleaning stations where the mantas queue up to use the services of the cleaner wrasse living there. Lucky divers can hover slightly away and below the cleaning station watching as the mantas come again and again and again! Whilst Manta Rays are the main draw to this dive site the is also a lot of fishy action going on here. As this reef also acts as a huge cleaning station, many visitors check in to the area. Regular sightings include white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, hump head wrasse, barracuda and hawksbill turtles. Also check in the cracks and crevices for lobster, moray eels, shrimp, octopus and other cool critters hanging around.
On the west side of Furanafushi there are these three dive sites, from north to south: Furana Thila, north and south. The thila is very interesting with ingoing current, always during south west monsoon where eagle rays, nurse sharks and even mantas can be found here. About 100m south there is Furana North, where whale sharks can be found from may to november. After staying some time in the thila, starting at 8m, is easy to drft away to Kanduoiygiri and do a long safety stop enjoying the reef top.
In Furana South the life is similar to north, but the reef top is even more beautiful, so the best diving is from 5 to 20 meters. If the current is incoming, grey reef sharks and eagle rays are common. Also is possible to spot whale shark during SW monsoon and even dolphins. Whitetip reef sharks are also seen here. If the current is too strong, is possible to drift to Kuda Kalhi. This area is very busy with a lot of boat traffic in the surface, so a safety balloon is needed.
