A group of 10 Dutch divers explored the WW1 wrecks of the German High Seas Fleet in Scapa with a liveaboard charter of the dive vessel M.V. Invincible during the 1st week of September 2016. In 12 dives they went to the last remains of the huge battleships SMS Markgraf, Kronprinz Wilhelm, König, Bayern and the light cruisers SMS Cöln, Dresden, Karlsruhe and Brummer. An overwhelming dive experience made possible by Ian and Fiona Trumpess of M.V. Invincible. From all the made footage this video gives a brief report of the dive on the SMS Cöln. One of our favourites.

I dived the wrecks back in 1996 and to be honest was a bit underwhelmed as many of the ships have been salvaged and what’s left of them is a tangled unrecognisable courtesy of Cox and Danks salvagers still it was an interesting experience.

I had sunk them all above each other direkt in the main entrence to the Harbor so the British High Seas Fleet had no Natural Harbor anymore.

No you had not 1. I takes a while to make a steam ship sail, which would have been noticed 2. While a crime, scuttling is somewhat considered noble, that would have been sabotage 3. Not been noble you probably would not have had any command 4. The Entrance would either have been to deep to have any blocking effect or shallow enough that salvaging is easy.

@@donbow450 the Harbor Entrence is on its deepest point -12m so if you put there a 150 - 200m ship above each other you can block the entire harbor

@@Nebraska214 The ships have a draft of 5-9m you would nnot been able to put 2 on top of each other and again: easy salvageable

Thank you for posting this. I have been diving for over 40 years and Scapa Flow is certainly on my list of places I would like to see. In my opinion, for wreck diving, the two top sites in the world are Truk and Scapa Flow.

Isn’t it considered a war crime to fire on an unarmed surrendered enemy fleet like the British did here? Sad that those German sailors died on their ships all because they did their duty and didn’t let their ships fall into enemy hands!! Most were off the ship but the crews that scuttled those ships may they rest in peace

The German ships are not war graves. They were deliberately scuttled by their crews while under internment after the Armistice. HMS Royal Oak, however, is a far different story.

Enjoyed the video, although not sure about the music. I retired from diving three years ago after spending many years diving in Scotland. Never made it up to Scapa however. One of my favourite wrecks was the Thesis in the Sound of Mull. Unfortunately it collapsed in early 2015. It's good to see divers still enjoying these wrecks, which unfortunately like the Thesis, won't be there forever. Pretty good viz as well.

Had a thought, would the German ships have been of use to the British in WW2. Then had another thought, would that knucklehead Eden have returned them as part of his appeasement policy before the outbreak of hostilities in the 1930s? Alternative historical speculation is mind boggling!

Steve P - Maybe you should start to use your brain cell then you would realise how much you have been lied to about Hitler, WW2 and everything else - Google Paisley Expressions and the Jesus, Hitler and Wizard of Oz post on there just now and you will realise how much you have been lied to and wait till Part 2 gets posted soon to see what that is going to expose.

what's interesting is the steel is pre the Atomic bomb dropping, so it's unique and has particular uses that steel made after the 45. It's called Low-background steel and is used in things such as Geiger counters, Sensors , Medical equipment. The steel at Scapa flow has been the main source of such steel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-background_steel
@AdstarAPAD
@AdstarAPAD 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidrenton Very interesting.. Well what will they do when this source of steel is lost? Could they filter the Oxygen to remove the radiation and produce this Pre atomic steel again?
@matthewwilliams2709
@matthewwilliams2709 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidrenton not so much a demand anymore as the development of better foundry tech to produce radiation free steel is available at a very premium production cost but the technical products that require such steel are usually pricey so extra costing steel isn’t a issue. In the past it was true that such vintage steel was worth the salvage costs but now not so much
