Diving With Whale Sharks in the Georgia Aquarium

Scuba diving with 4 whale sharks in the Ocean Voyager Exhibit at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. There's no other place like it and no matter how many times you've been diving in the ocean, nothing beats the abundance of amazing wildlife concentrated in this 6.3 million gallon tank. Incredible!

I literally just did the snorkeling experience and it was truest breathtaking. If you plan on doing this experience, or are even questioning doing it, just do it you won’t regret it. Little warning though you should expect to be bumped a fair amount. I got bumped 2 times by whale sharks, and got smacked by the wings of the manta rays 3 times. Absolutely no regrets though.

I've recently become certified in open water and stumbled across The Georgia Aquariums whale shark dive program. Quick question, I was reading the FAQ on their website for diving with whale sharks. It said "no cameras of any sort can be taken on the dive"!? So my question is. Did you shoot all this footage yourself? I'm also noticing there are MANY other uploads from people who have done the dive as well on youtube. I Don't really want to fork over 350 bucks for this AMAZING experience and not be able to take picture/video to remember it by lol. Thanks!

Daryl wolfe Also, does this count as an actual dive for your dive log? it's technically not "open water" lol being inside a tank and what not. But I also notice they have a couple specialty dive certificaton programs. Sooo maybe?? Thanks again!

When you dive, there is a dive master, a safety diver, and a videographer diver. Yes it does count as a dive in your dive log. My dive was 40 minutes with max depth of 30'. . They offer the footage/stills for ~$50. Bring family so they can see you from the other side and take pictures through the glass. They get some behind the scenes looks also and can follow you around the tank and see you through the various windows. Yes it was the most expensive single dive I've ever been on. However, it was a surprise 40th birthday present so I didn't know I was doing it until my wife took me up to the counter to check me in....

You can do it but you have to have a person over 18 do it with you. You must be dive certified to dive or you can swim at the surface. The swim is 234.99 plus tax and the dive is 334.99 plus tax, both for 30 minutes of being in the water.

Everyone, the whale sharks here were rescued. They cannot survive in the wild bc of some trauma. Hence, they’re in the aquarium

XManu '-' Killer Whales are unpredictable. SeaWorld has trained orcas, but they're kept alone or with a couple other orcas. In a tank, they might start killing other fish just out of boredom. Theres a video on KZbin showing a killer whale throwing a seal 20 feet in the air, just for fun. Probably killed the seal.

That's in the wild. Orcas in the wild haven't killed a single human, the main orca at SeaWorld that recently died, tilikum, killed 3 people. Orcas don't work in tanks

It's still not possible at the moment. The tank would have to much larger than the largest killer whale tank in the world (blue whales are just as long as the screen in Shamu Stadium, from San Diego). The depth would have to be at least twice the lenght of the largest animal. You would also need a huge amount of staff members to care for at least one whale.

Stevo Canuck Size of three Olympic hockey rinks and is the largest tank in the world. There are whale sharks in tanks a third this size. It would 13 seconds for them to swim the length of this at top speed compared for 1.5 seconds for an average fit man to run the length of an average house.

This makes me really sad and is wrong on so many levels. Whale sharks don't belong in a tank. If you are a passionate scuba diver why don't go out in the ocean to see them in the wild? If you are concerned about marine wildlife such aquariums should not be supported at any time. I assume that crowds of tourists go there but not passionate scuba divers :( The comparison that the aquarium was such a greater experience vs. ocean dives just makes me sad and is completely not true if you dive at the right spots. sorry

As for the BIIIIIITCH - I'm very well, thanks for asking :) Ready for some facts? 16 whale sharks kept at the Okinawa Expo Aquarium survived an average of 502 days in captivity vs their 100-year life span. They die premature deaths in tiny tanks. Two whale sharks in Georgia Aquarium died in 2007 and were simply replaced. The sharks currently kept circle the small area up to 576 times during opening hours whilst going insane. Nice life, isn’t it? Aquariums try their best to appear educational and conservation-oriented but they are designed to put profit well ahead of animal welfare. Placing those precious sharks in aquariums is a death sentence to them. But to come to your genius repopulation comment: No whale shark has ever bred in captivity. ZERO - so much to your conservation theory. But let’s try to make them jump though burning hoops, as dolphins and Orcas had so much success with it and seemed happy till they try to kill themselves... Oh wait - they can't jump. booooring.....
