Although the US frequently eulogise their sporting heroes from the twenties and thirties (Ty Cobb, 'Babe' Ruth, Joe Louis), in Britain they are largely ignored and overlooked. It is hard for modern sports fans to equate their sports heroes from today with those of yesteryear, but to those in the know, the feats of Dixie Dean put him up with the world greats - Pele, Maradona, Zidane, Dean. This film will illustrate that the feats of Dixie should rate him alongside the greats of the modern game.

60 goals in a single season......that’s mental. As a Liverpool supporter I take my hat off to Dixie and feel proud that he was a Scouser. He was probably the greatest striker this country has ever seen. Just imagine, if they were both born in the same era - Dixie and Jimmy Greaves in the same team! Unplayable!

that 33 cup final was the first time numbers were worn and instead of both teams having 1 to 11 on their backs the numbers went from 1 to 22. everton wore 1 to 11 and man city wore 12 to 22. the number 9 shirt is synonymus with great goalscorers everywhere and that moment when dixie turns his back to the camera at 2.33 sends chills even up my spine, it`s a beautiful moment. because he wore 9 that day everyone else has since. the first number 9 and probably the best. scouser and a red.

CONTINUED... legend grew from such, and his war time appearances, are testimony to the impact he made. But Dean's record, over a 12 to 15 year period was simply ASTONISHING. Sometimes I think it would have been better if he'd never got the 60 in a season, just say, 42, the region of goals he got so many times, then maybe people would appreciate his achievements so much more. His goals per game, in top flight football, is only matched by Greaves. Dean is the KING of British CF's.

Thanks Legend for sending me here. And thanks to the uploader. This is staggering... this record of his, just looking through it on wikipedia is astonishing. I can't believe that so many people rate Tommy Lawton ahead of Dean, the war years considered in Lawton's favour. Only Greave's record comes close, but though I know Dean allegedly benefitted from an offside law change, it just shows his brains really... and his record stayed marvellous long after 1928. Happy Christmas to you all.

Losing a testicle in a game, having to have his leg amputated and dieing at Goodison while watching his beloved Everton lose to his nearest and dearest rivals shortly after Bill Shankly gave his famous speech about Dean. This story along with the story of Jack Johnson are two of the greatest stories never told and almost forgotten which is a great shame.

There are a lot of Movies made and books written based of fiction which are far less interesting inspiring and motivational. The story of Dixie Dean is fact and truly incredible. From his near death in a motor bike accident and potentially never playing again to completing his remarkable feat of 60 league goals is truly incredible.

Dixie didn't win the European cup five times because it only started in 1955/56. Liverpool have never won the league five times in a row. And Kenny Dalglish wasn't a centre forward. Do you know your history? You can only be the best of your era and Dixie Dean was head and shoulders above the rest of his peers.

All the players and generations can be compared. The rules have changed from time to time which have some times made it easir or harder for strikers to score or for defenders to defend. Within the rules of the time Dean was the greatest, it is being made easir once again to score goals in the modern game with game fast becoming a non contact sport. It started with banning the tackle from bhind and both feet off the floor now most defenders are scared to slide tackle making it easir for small nip

Dixie Deans record of 60 goals in a season may never be broken, but if it is to be, it'll be if or when Lionel Messi decides to play in the premier league. I could see it being challenged then. Couldn't rule out two goals a game for Messi. If Messi doesn't play in premier league - then it'll be another 100 years before a good enough player comes along to challenge again

Lawton was a marvellous centreforward, everyone knows that. He was also surrounded by the most charismatic set of wingers and inside forwards England ever had. I know the war as James Lawton once wrote, carved a huge hole in his career, but at the end of the day, he had two top class seasons with Everton, and one with Chelsea. That his

Bren sYd I'd say big difference but not massive difference. The American league was particularly good back in the 1910's and 1920's they it used to be mostly English, Scottish and Irish players. Mostly unknown yes, bad not at all, probably better than the Irish league. But still, my point was precisely because Archie didn't play in the Premier League it's hard to Stark him up to Dean IMHO.

Football is all about opinions. Today there are poeple who say Ronaldo is better some say Messi is better. Back in the 30's people wouldnt have had television to see these player. Dixie was coming to the end of his career when Lawton was on the up. Of course Lawton was better near the end of Deans career but if you compare them both in their prime or their best season Dean scored more. Fair enough Lawton lost his best years because of the war but Lawton was standing on the shoulders of a giant.

What's the 50's got to do with it? Dixie was late 20's early 30's in his prime. Jimmy who? Scottish football is still as bad as ever, I reckon Dixie would have scored double up there in clown football land. Don't mention how it was a poorer standard, centre halves could get away with near murder not like today's non contact game. The man survived a motor cycle accident in which he fractured his skull- he still came back and played. LEGEND.
