DIY: 2016-2018 Chevy Volt Oil Change @ 41,500 miles! - oil, filters, gaskets, tools!

Chevy Volt Vlog #62+ DIY Video to how to change the oil on the 2016- 2018 Chevy Volt
This will be my 3rd oil change for my Volt. I had the Chevy Dealership change my oil at 10,000 miles with 50% oil life, 20,000 miles at 50% oil life. This time its now 41,500 miles at 0% oil life, and its time to do it DIY to save $30-50 dollars!. Which means the change interval for the 2017 Chevy Volt is about 20,000 miles!!! After changing it i will now change it when it reaches 5-10% oil life as the oil looks thicker than normal by 0%.

I needed to add drain and fill about 3.8 quarts of Mobil 1 - 0w-20 (amzn.to/2CX5xPl) instead of the recommended 5w-20 as i prefer lighter weight oil in my cars with needing 5w-20 oil weight motors. I will also be changing out the oil filter with the Wix XP filter ( or the ACDELCO PF64 filter thats about $6.50 at Walmart or Amazon - amzn.to/2FPL3uZ -

SAE 5/8" is closer to 16 mm than 15 mm. A 6 point 5/8" socket will work if you are careful, but just get the 15 mm socket. No need for an emergency oil change esp. in a Volt. 15mm = 0.590" < 19/32"

Any oil filter with a size ZZ thread should work btw. It says the thread size engraved in the metal on the top of the filter. Never says on the box so you have to open the box in the store. But pretty much every brand makes a size ZZ and at least the ones I've seen are all the same diameter/width of the entire filter but ones for synthetic seem 2 inches or so longer/taller which is fine bc there's plenty of room.

How do you check the transmission fluid level on the 2017 chevy volt?

good question... theres no documentation on the owners manual but i know its be staining the cap... i will find out in a few months... i plan to change out the transmission fluid at 60k miles, not going risk the 100 k internval.

That oil life is bogus, and likely set by GM in order to achieve some low fossil fuel impact score for credits. Regardless of mileage, remember to change your once a year since the oil can become acidic, especially if its run frequently without getting to full temp, as can be an issue with hybrids.

In a Chevy volt that motor only run once in a great while, my wife owns one. In the two years with the full synthetic oil and the synthetic oil filter I sent the oil off to be tested and it was still good. I feel that the test shows that two years is not going to long on these engines since the oil does not have that many hours on it. Of course that is for my wife's driving habits yours could be different.

Use 5 w 20. Not what you think is better. It states 5 20

No difference between 5w-20 and 0w-20. Really, they are identical & interchangeable. The viscosity difference is insignificant at all temps. 5w-20 @ 1 C has same viscosity as 0w-20 @ 0 C. Only their hairdresser would know for sure,

Does the oil drain plug gasket really have to be changed?

I got my plug gaskit from the Chevy dealership - it was $6 or so. (pricey!!!) I typically replace the gasket (or crush washers) on all my oil changes. However on my last oil change at the dealership they did not list the gasket/ plug on the invoice ... so I would but who knows if the dealership does.

There’s no need to change the seal on the drain plug unless there’s a problem with it.
