OMG. I think I watched about 9 videos before I came across yours. Your video is the only one that explains that both the remote and then the garage door opener have to be programmed separately. Hell, Not even my 2022 Toyota Highlander Platinum says this in the manual which is a critical piece of information. Geez Louise!!!

Thanks for the video. Brand new 2021 Highlander, tried the owners manual instructions couldn't get it to work, did your video, worked like a champ. The keys for my issues were: make sure you hold homelink button down when programming from remote (owners manual said to press just once) and then do the second step with the learn button. Basically just follow your video exactly and other users shouldn't have an issue.

Great video, thank you! Strategy worked on a 2021 Highlander as well! Heads up, if your Homelink doesn't connect to the door opener PDQ grab another door opener or a new battery for the one you have (actually states this in the OM as well). The door opener I grabbed worked fine for the door but didn't seem to have enough for the Homelink system. After 30 minutes of digging and trying alternative methods I finally grabbed the 2nd opener and got everything working in about 30 seconds.

.. but is it really two step? well, actually three steps because he 1st he erased all programs (step 1). I'm being told the first step is only IF you *don't* have a "Program" button on the Opener Motor.. i.e. not rolling code, and the second step shown, using the "Program" button is all that's needed in these Rolling Code machines. Dang.. wish my car was here.. Ok.. we'll see.

@@steven.h0629 from what the manual says, you would be right.... however, it dint work after completing those steps(with the program button on motor) multiple times... until I did the 2 step in series(after wiping codes in vehicle bc they were not needed).

I loved this! It worked perfectly. The manual was kind of useless on this procedure. I guess I needed a video explaining it to me in “Fargo” dialect. “You can do the udder one fer da udder door” - “now do the udder button fer da udder door” - “den hit da button” - “there goes the garage”. 😂👍😊

Doesn't work on my rav 4. I get all the way to pressing the learn button, then pressing the button chosen for opening the door in my car. I get the little green antennae thing but nothing happens after that.

For a 2020 Highlander, is there a way to only have the Homelink functional when the car is started? Otherwise, if someone breaks into the car when its not in the garage, they now have access to your home.

Not a easy way. You'd have to disconnect the main power from the homelink to a switched power. It would require a bit of work. Not sure why manufacturers don't do it this way.

@@toddthornton7977 oh it can be done by someone who does stereo installs or alarms. Just switch the constant power to a switched and it's done.

I just got a new opener. I don't want to reset because I don't want to clear the 2nd button and 3rd button. I need to reprogram the 1st button. Can I clear just one button?

You can’t reset one button. But you can try to program the one button and skip the reset to see if it’ll work.

I’m not sure if your opener has no learn button. Sorry. I’d recommend googling or contact the opener company.

Just bought a new Highlander 2021 LE, and found it doesn't come with the home link. It's very cheap of Toyota to remove a basic feature like this.

It honestly should work the same way. I’ve used this way on many cars in the past from Acura, Nissan and Toyota. The key is to reset the homelink by holding the two outside buttons down till it goes to a fast blink from a slow blink.

My trouble was not realize that I shave to use a handhold remove to link with the car first. Since I don’t have a functioning handhold remove, I had to get an old one with proper battery. And then make it learning the garage door opener code first. So to me it was three steps. 1, Program a handhold remote. 2, Sync the handhold to homelink. 3, And the last is to learn the rolling code. Both step 1 and 3 need to access the button on the opener. Thx.
