Rebuilding my 3sgte engine timing belt kit (seals, gaskets, water/oil pump and timing belt)
DONT FORGET TO PUT BACK THE TIMING BELT GUIDE "METAL WASHER" BEFORE THE TIMING COVER.
Tq spec for the water pump and oil pump housing is 9ft lbs
SORRY FOR THE LONG A$$ VIDEO. I was doing it and explaining it at the same time. Usually take me 40mins to do everything.

To decrease the timing belt fitment frustration, refrain from fully tightening the timing belt tensioner mount bolts prior to fitting the timing belt. The timing belt tensioner mount bolt holes are "egged" out and will allow a few millimeters of movement, thereby decreasing the tension against the timing belt pulley. This might sound trivial with the motor on a stand, but doing this while the motor is in the vehicle will spare you from cursing loudly and kicking the family dog.

An easy way to copy those marks on your timing belt is to use 2 long nails and a board. Drive one nail in and put both belts on it with their sides touching. Stretch both belts until pretty tight and then put the other nail in the board to keep them stretched, then copy the marks. Simple and quicker than counting teeth.

its advisable that you check clearance on the oil pump with feeler gauges, to know if you need a new one or not... SST = Specialty Service Tool. One click is good with torque wrench, clicking several times will apply more pressure than you have set on torque wrench. finally got around to watching the whole video.

Great video, very informative. When I replaced mine, I didn't set the timing back to top dead center, I marked where the timing was previously, changed the belt and cranked the pulley one full turn. Next time I replace it, I'll refer back to your video. Thanks!

You technically don't have to set at tdc. It just makes it easier for starting and for a reference to see when something has spun out of time in relation to the other compnents.

Hey Bob I know that when doing timing belt you have to line up the 3 dot mark but when you put on the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) there also a grove mark on it too how would that be mark at?.

To make Your life much easier I recommend to install the tensioner after belt is on.

Nice method of pulling the seals flush rather than tapping them home. Seems to give a little better control.

How do you get the crankshaft bolt loose while the engine is out? I only have hand tools and a long pipe

You mention that you're not running the AC bracket, how do you tension the altenator belt? I've removed my AC compressor but I'd like to get rid of the bracket as well...

Hey Bob, im doing this myself on a 3sge, basically the same process. I just wanted to ask, when you undo the cam bolts and oil pump nut, you have the belt off and your power tool makes light work of it..i dont have a power tool though..Do i need to get a tool to hold the pulleys while i undo the bolts/nut or should i put the belt back on and see if that gives enough holding power?

Hey I have a question how bad do these things run if timing slips a tooth or two cuz my car is running horrible I have a 3sgte cold it basically sounds like I have an aggressive Cam and won't rev over 2000 and barely will idle

On the 5th gen 3S-GTE they've increased the torque specifications on the oil pump to 12 Nm (106 in lbs). Not sure about the 4th gen.

Yes but you've gotta be easy on it, they're not as strong as the turbo transmissions

my gen4 timing is lined up exactly how yours is in the video but the engine is still acting like it does not have enough timing ( wont rev correctly , stumbley under acceleration , high fuel consumption etc) am i missing something?

I'm assuming this problem only started after you replaced the timing belt? If you're absolutely positive you have mechanical timing correct, it's time to start looking elsewhere. Electrical timing, air supply, or fuel supply.

Have been over the wiring multiple times , all checks out , no engine code or check engine light , where would a good place be to start ?

Verify your basics. You've been over your mechanical timing marks for the belt I'm sure, but run a compression test. Make sure you're getting the numbers you expect to get. If not, maybe the engine valves/cams are out of time to the crank despite how it looks. Check fuel supply pressure. Maybe when you're accelterating/loading engine the pump or fuel pressure regulator isn't working correctly. Make sure you have the electrical timing of the distributor set correctly, etc. If all that adds up, start going over your electrical connections with a fine too comb. Make sure all plugs are completely inserted, listen for that "click". Check for any grounds you may have left loose.

You're really brave to trust your impact driver to torque critical fasteners ie: waterpump housing. Don't copy him guys. Find and follow your torque specs especially for critical fasteners like the crank pulley. H20 pump, cam gears etc

@@BobPham my mistake I saw you use the driver and right away commented. My apologies I will pull off my comment after you see this. I am remiss. Good work. I spoke to soon and foolishly so. I have been searching for a 2nd gen mr2 expert. I'm an independent technician and I took on a build. It's a 91 mr2 2.2L but theres no engine in the bay. It came with a 3sge but it's got a turbo manifold both in and ex. And greddy turbocharger. It's got a inlay sticker on the head that says 3sge. Not 3sgte. The transmission is coming saturday the vehicle owner is dropping it off along with CV shafts. I have some questions. Can u email me some contact info just from one technician to another ? I am a licensed tech so it's not like I'm looking for free consults just a friendly bit of info that I can finally trust from someone that's been there and physically done it. Billy C : Hey there. The Phillips screw part is just standard Toyota security. Like the one piece wiring loom and crank removal tool and before you get to the 14 job specific tools Bob Pham and Toyota imply/ show you need to do all seals. Before even this stage, I had to get seven other special tools. It takes some effort to restrain yourself on the 6th water pump screw. Adding an Allen head drive, counter sunk screw is really hard if you don't have access like on my RAV4. Nice comments.

if you dont have such tools you can buy lock spacer for flywheel or make one.
