Hi guys!
In this episode I will show you how I made a 5V mini UPS. It took a long time to finish this project because I wanted to create a good circuit to protect the battery.

Just ordered a multipack of those tp5100 modules to try out. I'm still a fan of the tp4056 and have many. But the increased voltage input on the tp5100 is intriguing. Good job. Thanks for the info Sorin.

It's allways good to see new DIY designs... i used the TP4056 a lot in the past, but now i changed to the TP5100... also accepts 5v, up to 18v, and it's a buck charger, so it will be much more efficient, so less power wasted into heat...

I am having the same issue with my DIY Bluetooth speaker when trying to turn it on, i have a toggle switch too and the only way to turn it on is to flip the switch on an off a few times quickly. I have added among other things a boost converter for the amplifier and the capacitors are not kind to the battery during startup. It works fine when it is connected to USB power though, exactly the same issue like yours!

Small hack I use for a similar application (actually I only want to be able to power my circuit from the same USB as the battery is charging while the battery is charging, but the trick applies here I believe): you can set the charge current for your battery pack from TP4056 by changing the resistor on it and you can select the maximum charging voltage by putting a diode in series with the battery and choosing the diode which has a small difference of the forward voltage at the max charge current and at zero charge current so that the battery doesn't go into a start-stop charging loop. I use a 1N4148 and set the current at 300mA... it charges the battery at ~3.8V and I don't see the blue and red LEDs flicker when charging ends. I used this trick to make my nephew a music box with a DFPlayer mini and it's on the original Li-ion batery (1 cell) for 3 years now, being played every day and charged every other day. It's a miracle I can still think without singing "Aramsamsam" or "Lulu danseaza-n poienita" constantly :D

You can cut the charging of the batteries by adding a LM431 adjustable zener shunt regulator connected to another relay/mosfet or just use a different Rprog resistor to lower the charging current thus never letting the batteries reach 4.2V

Great little project making good use of other readily available modules. Only thing I’d add would be a temperature sensor on the batteries and maybe an inrush current limiter. Any chance of showing the supply current/voltage during switching on a scope? I’m interested to know if the dip would cause a processor reset on a connected project. Keep up the excellent work and great to see you are training your assistant 😀👍

I'm not trying to teach anyone how to suck eggs but with UPSs it can be very useful connecting them to the target device via dual input adapters. That way if the UPS needs to be disconnected for a moment, you can parallel power the target device and remove the UPS without interrupting the target device. _Not sue if this device will accommodate that._

good tip about poking the eye out, i never had anything hit my eye using dremel tools and what not because i always wear eye protection , except once when iwas cutting a piece of plastic with wire cutters, it literally hit my eyeball and i could feel it ike a blunt force hit on the eye, not a sharp pain, and even felt sore after like a bruise would. watch yourself when cutting hard materials, (actually dont, close your eyes!)

Congratulations for a good video. I want to point out that you have not taken care of load sharing when charging the battery with TP module. Since you are charging the battery as well as at the same time you are taking current for output USB so the TP module will confuse and will keep charging the battery. It may not stop charging the battery. Have you seen battery charging stopping upon completely charge ?
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 28 күн бұрын
Hi. The schematic may be a little confusing. the battery is connected to the boost converter, only when there is no charger input and the relay pins (battery to converter) are in normally closed mode. when the charger input is active, the relay "opens" the battery-converter circuit and the battery is connected only to the TP4056. so the charging of the battery is done separately from the rest of the circuit.

very neat project but some of us usually dont have access to jlcpcb in our country but i have a similar board which is YX-X804. only problem is there is about 1 second delay when the relay switched from power supply to battery. im currently using it on my router. ive tried different types of capacitor i was able to salvaged from but non works or the maybe the capacitors used were not have enough juice to power my router? oh btw my router only draws 0.3 amps on 12v if that help solvesbmy issues.
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY Жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm not familiar with that module, but 1s delay is long, most devices will shut down in that time. you can try with bigger capacitors on the output. or you can make my circuit on a simple perf board, or just solder wires between the components.

What is the response time of the UPS? You say it has almost no delay switching between mains and battery power
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. it depends on the charger and the load. the chargers have smoothing capacitors that store a tiny amount of energy, which continues to power the relay after the mains power is interrupted. the larger the capacitor, the longer the switching delay time will be. I tested different chargers and delay was 0.2 - 0.5s with no load. if you connect a load to the UPS, it will draw power from the charger. so when the mains power is interrupted, the load will discharge the capacitors inside the charger faster, so the relay will switch faster. in my tests I got about 0.1s.

@DrZipZwan
@DrZipZwan 2 жыл бұрын
That why the capacitors are there, they keep the load On in your case, the Pi, until batteries kicks in. Plus relay used here, got a small switching delay, so chance are high to be good for a Pi or any 5V device. You need to check his video he made long ago about Router UPS, last time he used capacitor to maintain load ON and dummy load to fast empty the Power wall charger. This time dummy load is kind of replaced by more efficient relay time. PS: I made the Router UPS based on capacitor & dummy load, for a 9v Router and it is working well. It is basically the same as the router USP, instead this time voltage in only boosted to 5V.
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. the switching delay time is about 0.1 - 0.5s, depending on the charger and the load. I don't have a raspberry pi but I'm convinced it will work. but it also depend on the total current consumption, this mini UPS is recommended for less than 1A. because with a higher current the boost converter will heat up and may not work correctly.

This is good. But there are smaller module that has almost all the feature integrated onto a 8pin IC: - 3.7V battery - OverCharging protect - OverDischarge protect - OverCurrent Protect - 5.12V 2A Output Boost - 5V 2A input - Support pass through charging (if input connected to 5V, output also 5V) - 4 led indicator - one click on/off button - 92.5% efficiency - Realy small pcb size 15mm x 28mm x 5mm - Really cheap (around 1US$/module in my country) The name of module is MH-CD42 & the IC name is IP5306 For the output just add 2x1000uf 10V capacitor or more so there no voltage drop when changing from main power to battery power or otherwise.

this boost converter is not powerful. it can deliver 12V but probably with only 100mA.

Sir please reply.... how much maximum amperes can we give at input of mt3608 module ?
@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 10 ай бұрын
The input current depends on the output current/load and efficiency. the max out current is theoretically 2A, but in my tests I got max 1.8A and then the voltage drops. with a high out current the efficiency will be low so it will draw even more current at the input. there isn't a simple answer, you need to measure and calculate everything.

@Sorin_DIY
@Sorin_DIY 2 жыл бұрын
the boost converter can deliver maximum 1.5A. but as a UPS it will work with 1A or less.

So how to limit max battery voltage to 3.9? Do we need another module? Does such a module even exist?
