DIY - 80/20 Triple Monitor Stand by The Simpit

For many sim racers there are tons of options for sim racing chassis or rigs. However when it comes to triple screen monitor stands for sim racing there are not that many to chose from.
In this video Shauns shows off his design for a triple monitor stand that is made out of 80/20 extrusion or profile tubing. This universal material can be used to make a very good monitor stand completely designed around your rig.

Bosch Rexroth makes pivoting monitor mounts that work with extrusion. they may be a bit pricey, but they will give you a little more certainty in mounting heavier monitors

Excellent job, i tried this, but one of my monitors has different vesa hole aligment so i have to add some aditionals brackets to adjust the heigth...

So I've been pricing out alternatives to 80/20 and Framing Tech seems to be a good choice. They have similar mounting methods but without all the bulky plates everywhere

Does anyone know the width of the tubing (not the length)? They come in a ton of different sizes - 1 inch (the 10 series), 1.5 inch (15 series), or 20 mm up to 45 mm.

Don't make the same mistake I made - don't use 1 inch tubing - it's WAY too flimsy. To be honest, this DIY makes no sense. 80/20 parts are extremely expensive, especially the various brackets. I'm about $300 into this thing, and because I was unclear on the tubing diameter, I went with the first one that popped up on 80/20's confusing web site - cataclysmic mistake. I ended up with a flimsy, unstable mess that I've probably spent 8 hours (and counting) trying to make work, but it sags so much under the weight of my monitors that I think it's hopeless. I'm about ready to throw the whole thing into the the trash and buy a ready-built one.

​@@andrewnagy4456 4 years later... haha. Thanks for the reply! I currently use a built pit called the "Obutto revolution". I think the business went under. I love it to a point, but there's things I really hate about it too. It's extremely stable, but I've had to customize the heck out of it. I ended up using the 15 series from 80/20 for some of that. Built a thing off the side to hold a hand brake, sequential shifter, h-shifter, flight sticks, etc. I also made a floor panel out of wood so I can quickly switch from racing pedals to flight pedals in just a few seconds. But it's still not quite right. I really need to customize this further, like lowering the wheel, leveling the monitors, etc. At this point it means custom building an entire pit. I would have spent a lot less if I went with 80/20 in the first place (assuming I get the right profile! Got to go big) It would be so much simpler if I only wanted to do racing *or* flying, but I want both, and I want it quick and easy to switch. :) Good luck to you on your pit!

@@theforgedone Yeah, I just wanted to share my experience so nobody else goes through the unmitigated misery this thing has caused me. When I was pricing monitor stands, it was at the depth of the pandemic, and I guess there were fewer stands being advertised, and what I saw was gerenally north of $400, which struck me as ridiculous. So I ran across this video from Simpit, and it looked pretty reasonable, but I should have done a lot more research before plunking down my cash. I was so appalled at how much the componenets, particularly, the brackets, cost, that I guess I subcoinsciously assumed the 1" tubing would be adequate. Also, I went with 5" t-brackets from Home Depot, and cut their excess lengths off to make the straight brackets, thinking I was being very clever. Another big mistake, as they're not as thick as the brackets from 80/20, further contributing I'm sure to the stand's instability. At least I used the (ungodly expensive) 90 degree brackets from 80/20. Bottom line, to do this right, you have to use at least 1.5" tubing, which will entail larger and more expensive brackets, and further drive up the cost. I checked triple monitor stands online again last night, and found several that look quite nice, in the $250 range, INCLUDING the VESA mounts, which is way less than it costs to build this thing from 80/20 components. Also, even if you do it right, there's no adjustability of the angle of the side monitors, which sucks. Anybody looking for some 1" 80/20 tubing and assorted hardware? As I said above, this thing is probably headed flor the trash very soon. I'm not upset with Simpit, as most of my problems were completely self-inflicted, just pointing out that this is one item that makes a lot more sense to just buy ready-made.

hello shaun firstly thanks for this video. even I am also making a ring both for sim racing and FPS games. I am also placing triple 27inch monitor but due to space can the angulation be less from 135 degree as u told in video if yes please tell me can I go under 120 degree angulation for side monitors. You record them at a perfect level,mixed nicely,that part is all right,,you just need to run it through a maximiser afterwards to boost the signal, without clipping. Thank you for a great show.

+rizzee rizz Shaun built this to his specs, which included a spot to hold his computer, up high and off the ground for easy access. You can't say that about a GT Omega stand. Also making a monitor stand with the same material as the rig, maintains a certain ascetic of look.
