One improvement you do is add some square grid lines on the top and bottom so you can be sure your bends are 90 degrees to the edge. If you want tighter radius bends you could narrow the opening above the heating element. You might want to remove some of the pine around the element and install some gypsum (fire code drywall) or other heat proof material.

I would also add something to hold the sheet in place while it's being bent. Some sort of a clamp close to the heater. A strip of metal running across the panel, hinged on one side with a latch or lock on the other.

@@Booruvcheek Yeah what I did when I needed a number of pieces bent at the same place is I tacked on a strip of wood at the correct spot, that way the bend line is the same on all of them.

one standalone radiatior tube he uses needs 400W of power, so using a pC powersupply with custom made nichrome wire is possible but you max out the power of the power supply where some cheaper/older ones could break.

My old Tefal mini oven has a thermostat, I think that would be worth keeping too.... The elements are bent to fit in the oven but are soft and can be straightened by hand, I tried with one and it still worked! Can now make a much bigger machine for bending acrylic!

Julia, you may find wire nuts are a much safer connection than twisting the wires together; especially with a high load like an element from an electric heater.

I would highly not recommend using mains voltage for this application unless your country runs 110V or lower with either a ELCB/RCD safety device installed on the mains circuit breaker. its far more safer to use NiCr wire with a DC Transformer.

the heater element is way too hot for this job but as long as he doesn't have it powered up too long, he'll be ok. But it wouldn't take long to start charring and then igniting the pine. It'd be far better if he included the rheostat from the heater to control the temp of the element. I have a strip heater to do just this and it's 10w. That heater element is probably 700.

There's aluminium shield that reflects part of the radiant heat, I guess he could get one polished to make the bending faster so wood gets exposed less with the temperature gradient.

@@richardphatthenguyen195 the easiest way would be just add a controller to turn down the wattage of the element. But if he wanted more precise bends (aka a narrower radius) he could narrow the opening by using an L shaped piece of aluminum. But aluminum is notorious for being a good conductor of heat. In addition (having worked for a plastics fabricator for years) you should be heating both sides of the acrylic. It takes the stress out of the bend. It's a good basic design though. Great for making the occasional bend or piece.

Hello, @Muskoka Mike Yes you are right . I thought about this but after I did the video :)). It was fine with an intensity adjustment for acrylic boards of different thicknesses. At the thin ones, it is good to give less power. Thanks for the tips. I will try to make a more perfect device with more adjustments, not that bassic. Thanks!

For Acrylic glass it takes a few seconds to warm up to bend it. To burn the wood takes a few minutes because the aluminum bar is still protecting it. so there is no fire at all. But your idea is good too. Thanks!

It's a proof of concept. He's showing us that it works. Also, in order for the wood to burn, the heat would need to do two things: 1. Get through the aluminium 2. Be hot long enough for it to get through the aluminium in order for the wood to burn, which is why he added a reed switch to disable the power when the acrylic is being being bent. Also, he just showed that it works without soldering. If you're going to use any type of power tool, common sense and caution are useful too.
