As a Santa Marian, I approve this build. 😉 Usually you'd use a braided stainless steel wire instead of chain, but I doubt it matters. If you want Santa Maria style BBQ, make sure you use red oak for your coals, and linguica sausage to start the grill as your appetizer. Bon Appétit

Nice. I've used one of these grills in Cali. You'll never be satisfied with any other once you've used one. Total control of your grilling. I'm trying to design and build one right now, with no welding skills, and a huge heavy restaurant grill I found. The bigger the wheel, the easier it is to move the grill. Add: that is very nice work!

Really nice. I love the stop you added to keep it at a consistent height. Simple, easy, and effective. If you made the grate either removable, or swivel-able, you could flat-pack the whole thing and it would fit in the travel trailer easier.

while i dont think i would haul that for camping, i think its ideal for the fire pit because its removeable and can be set to the side. Great project! Id like to build something similar. Always enjoy these DIY projects. There is a certain satifaction from making something from spare parts, scrap metal etc. And then the bonus is steak afterwards! LOL That will be great for dutch oven cooking as well because you can easily adjust the heat under the pot.

My mouth was watering sooo bad when they were in the grill! Btw…when ever you search for ribeyes at the store also keep you eye out for ‘chuck eye’ it’s a cut right next to the ribeye/prime rib cut… but it’s not as reliable cut depending on the body size. Anyways it’s the same flavor for less cost than the ribeye😉👍

FYI: from Wikipedia- Santa Maria-style barbecue is a regional culinary tradition rooted in the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County on the Central Coast of California. This method of barbecuing dates back to the mid-19th century and is today regarded as a "mainstay of California's culinary heritage. Santa Maria-style barbecue centers on beef tri-tip, seasoned with black pepper, salt, and garlic before grilling over coals of native coast live oak, often referred to as "red oak" wood.” And don’t forget the beans, tossed green salad, grilled French bread & fresh strawberries 🍓 😁

Regarding those who recommended red oak. For those not from California, it's costal live oak. Not the red oak most of the US is familiar with. It is uncommon to find it outside of California because there are many local laws prohibiting the movement of cut oak in an attempt to limit spread of diseases. I do recommend an oak though, it's my favorite wood to cook with.
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 2 жыл бұрын
I will definitely use oak as well. But most of it cooking is going to be AZ live oak and mesquite since they are both plentiful here….especially the mesquite. It’s the weed of trees here😂
@craigs831
@craigs831 2 жыл бұрын
@@homesteadonomics I know the AZ white oak is great to cook with, simular to the post oak popular in Texas cooking. Same white oak family. California live oak being in the red oak family, why we just call it red oak. If you ever come across any type of red oak, save some scraps for bbq. The flavors would be similar to the "authentic" flavor of a Santa Maria bbq. It's worth trying at least once!

Very cool, it’s much better to cook outside this type of year, this is perfect! Good to know about the meat too. I’ve recently started ordering from Freshlys. So far they’ve been great. They may seem expensive, but they’re actually saving me $. I’m no longer feeding the family last minute dinners from a fast food place or local restaurant (which I was doing wayyyy too much), and I’m not tossing a good chunk of food we never had time to cook. Let’s just say my chickens eat well 😂. It also cuts out impulse shopping. I sound like an advertisement, but I’ve been impressed with them! And they have made my life so much easier! I guess all this rambling is supporting mail ordered meals. They can be so much better than the alternatives. It’s good to know about this one you use. 👍🏻

Great project. It looks like the kind of grill you could cook a whole meal on… depending on how much heat an item required. Was the extra grate just because you had just painted the whole grill or some other reason? If all it takes to get a little rain in your area is to fire up the grill you ought to do that more often. Thanks so much for sharing and I love the fire pit as well.
