Great build! This is the style I've been eyeing for a while now. I like the simplicity of the lean-to roof, the covered egg access and the droppings clean out methodology. I also really want to build a coop that could be easily moved. Just setting it on leveled pavers, perhaps just putting down a couple tap-con screws into the pavers to keep the wind from lifting it, and just lag bolting the run to the coop for easy separation would make this very easy to move to a new location on the property using a utility trailer.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
While moving is great, the one problem I have with that is making sure your chickens are secure. I'm going to extend the hardware cloth for my walls 2 feet deep on all sides (yeah, costly). If you move the coop, how do you make sure animals can't dig through the bottom to get to it?
@jayhemfindsyou
@jayhemfindsyou Жыл бұрын
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 If you look at the other builds, a lot of people don't worry about burying the hardware cloth, instead they put large rocks (6-12" diameter rocks) lining the hardware cloth to ground contact around the entire coop/run and the animals that tend to dig under like racoons, possums and foxes can't dig with the large rocks in the way. I think it looks great that way too.

OMG, my original chicken coop design has same poop tray and two tier roost bar exactly like you have. After um-teen design iterations, I ended up doing the deep liter method. I think landed on the same video you mentioned to spark my interest to build a coop when I was searching for ideas. LOL. You did a wonderful job.

Love the simple and easily made with everyday materials that we all can make use of without confusion going to the hardware or lumber yard or home improvement store- especially as a chick because I am very familiar with all the building materials and the steps in the builds as I worked for years as a construction laborer and learned a lot doing all different jobs in that field and with Dad who is/was a block mason…still yet I get the “female” dumb down treatment too often and it really entertains mostly, until it irritates me. It makes this cool build easy for everyone to be able to do- of course I am now wanting my own nailer 😜… like I “need” it!! Whatever it takes to get more cool tools, right?! Found the perfect coop for the youngest group of 10 of our flock- minus the fenced in part as we have free range chickens. It has all the right additions and the ability to add or take away without hurting the design or structural integrity. Thanks! Oh yeah, Really love the not cutting into my head height that I nearly would’ve forgot until after! Big tip! With metal, it’s a big deal!

Love this coop! I built mine out of treated 2x2s as a walk-in A frame but this is so much nicer. To cut hardware cloth, just use an old pair of scissor hedge clippers (or borrow your neighbors, lol) Zip right through it.

! ! ! AWESOME JOB ! ! ! However, Let Me Say That the perches must be round, with a diameter of 3.5 cm (1.377 inches), not smooth (like bamboo) and without bark or cracks to avoid the proliferation of parasites, And Ideal angle of the perch is 45º, because that way, one bird does not defecate on top of the other. That It ! Congrats !

Same here, I just purchased the building plans from Third Coast Craftsman. Gonna go with the original size and I also want the linoleum on the floor to help protect the wood and hopefully have it last longer. Now if I can just get my husband to start the build...he's a very handy guy but not very confident about woodwork and construction. I'd try it myself but probably give him a heart attack to see me using power tools. 😂

I copied the design and made my own measurements.... Realistically building things like this doesn't require the cabinet or furniture making mentality.... 1/16" or even an 1/8" off is something that would get lost in the soup or paint, liquid trim etc..... But trust me those finish guys, furniture, cabinet people have a passion for measuring to the 32nd and 64th.... But for the typical weekend warrior handyman that is really a waste of time. It's an outdoor chicken coop....

I ordered 7 chickens that don't come for another six months, giving me plenty of time to decide how I'm going to build my coop. I think it's pretty obvious that 1. I want to build something awesome and 2. it won't be cheap. I'll be extremely happy to keep costs under $1,500!
@MWAWoodworks

Obviously we are not doing this save $ on eggs. A dozen eggs per week at $6.00 /dzn breaks even on a $1,500 coop at almost 5 years. Then add cost of birds, feed, bedding and other supplies and it probably has a 10year break even. I have been collecting some pallets on the side and hope to recycle those boards as siding to hold down costs. Also thinking of using 2x3 for framing walls of the coop ad nest box.
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Жыл бұрын
@@stanturbyfill4147 No, the only way to recoup (no pun intended) your money would be to get more birds, which would then produce enough eggs for you to sell them. I program for a living and have no interest in that! I DO like the idea of having alternatives for everything, and as we learned with this pandemic (and the egg price spike due to the bird flu), supply chains can be quickly disrupted. I think I'm going to stick with 2x4. I want to actually add insulation to my walls. If I ever decide to heat my coop, the insulation will make it easier to do so.

Are you selling the chicken coops?

Ive been looking at a lot of these chicken coop builds and this design is really nice! Two questions, does the rain stay out even with the windows open/could the windows be installed upside down so the screens are at the top? And do you have any issues with water intrusion where the egg door is folding down? Looks like there wasn't much overhang on the topside. Great job though....really like this layout!

I am almost done with my build (clone of this design), and if you plan you coop layout so the nesting boxes are on the prevailing downwind side they will stay dry, even in our east coast summer storms! The door that folds up, under the upper sheet of T1-11 is not prone to leaking from wind blown rain. Nesting boxes where the access hinge up top are prone to leaking as rain pelts the side by the windows and runs down. The other benefit of the hinge down access is you don't have to hold the access hatch up as you gather the eggs and no danger of it dropping on your head or fingers.

@@jayhemfindsyou did you find somewhere that he put plans for this build or did you just write down a supply list as the video was playing? I would love to build one of these once I finish putting up my new fence. Plans would be nice just for a shopping list, you always have to go to home depot a couple times, but a couple times sure beats 10 times because you're missing lumber😂😂

@@mikebrummy The original designer sells the plans. I wanted mine to be larger, 6' x 8' so I basically designed it in AutoCAD (I'm a civil engineer by day) from the video, using it as a basis for the design. From there I was able to put together my materials list. I really like the efficiency of this design especially with the run with a lean-to roof in the opposite direction as the main roof. I also added linoleum as a single sheet to cover the main floor and 3" up the walls to make it easier to clean in the event you have to get a mop in there for stuck on poop!
