I came here to say this! I rolled out of bed and broke my collar bone when I was in kindergarten. I'm not saying that regular beds are bad for five-year-olds, but having a mattress on the floor at that age would definitely have prevented a broken bone.

You might want to make a small platform (1-2inches) under the bed for air flow. Mattresses on the ground can develop mildew and mold on the underside. It's more common with memory foam but can happen with a coil mattress too, especially if you live in a damp climate.

@@Kodak718 Maybe instead of parroting something you heard once on the internet you should consider the actual real life experiences of others? The moldy floor mattress is an old wives tale that everyone’s heard but isn’t actually all that common. Any damp mattress can grow mold, and having it on the floor contrary to your lack of experience doesn’t make mold that much more likely. People with no experience can’t wait to explain to others how to care for their “dangerous floor mattress.” Everywhere you look up this topic you find tons of people saying their mattress has always been find on the floor all around the world and in various humid and damp climates. Is it POSSIBLE? Sure. Is it common? No. It’s not. Just a lot of people like you who heard it on the internet once who love to lecture and talk down to others about it. Any mattress can go moldy, being on the floor barely increases that risk. If it did then putting your mattress on the non breathable synthetic fabrics of a box spring would increase likelihood of mold between mattress and box spring. Or the people who stack multiple mattresses. Or putting a memory foam on a platform instead of slats would make them mot from not flipping all the time. Not to mention a lot of memory foam mattresses not intended to be flipped have s vinyl style bottom to them. Omg the mold growth must be insane without the air flow! Use YOUR head. Mattresses have been put on solid platforms forever. Yet somehow the idea that the floor was a massive mold vector got popular? It’s to sell furniture to people who can’t afford it by shaming them into feeling disgusting for not having it. Maybe consider your privileged experience before YOU get on the internet to tell everyone how things are based on your lack of experience and some home care advice you read on an article once.

Thats your house having problems, not the mattress. If you developed mold on your mattress because it was on the floor, think about the ventilation in your whole house. Get new flooring and a dehumidifier.

I hate how the term montessori has been hijacked and overused with little understanding to suit whatever anyone wants to do. From selling any toy or furniture at a ridiculous Hugh price to excusing not providing your child with an age appeopriate safe environment. This started from him hitting his head because she never placed a pillow/protector on the sides of the cot. Ans her having a sore back picking him up from the cot - easier to pick up a child from the cot than off the ground. Also easier to change a cot sheet than a queen bed sheet off the floor. But sure. It is all so progressive and 'montessori'

@@natanoodle3303When my husband and I moved 2 years ago, our first night in our new place we just slept on our mattress on the ground. It was so amazing we kept doing it. Eventually I got kids nightstands so they're closer to the floor, and put really tall lamps on them. We used half of our box springs (it was 2 pieces) wrapped in an antique quilt as a headboard and have a squishy high pile rug under the mattress. It looks grown up and cute, in my opinion. I don't think we'll go back to a regular bed, unless we get too old to climb off the floor 😂

Even for a child that is 8 months old, i feel like this is safer than a crib, i have SEEN babies younger climb over and fall, hurting themselves due to cribs. A mattress on the floor and a baby proof room is really smart and great for your baby probably, they have way more room and its on the GROUND so i HIGHLY doubt he's gonna hurt himself. Plus, as you've shown he's smart enough to learn how to crawl out safely. Nothing about this is unsafe. It's practically just a giant sleeping mat with extra cushioning. Children naturally are gonna hurt themselves while growing up, it's part of learning. You're doing amazing at keeping it safe and cozy, and giving him more freedom to learn and grow. Golden mom right here.

A montesori bed is a floor bed. A mattress on the floor can also be categorized as a montesori bed. In the sense that in montesori style parenting, the child should be able to assess(get in and out) of the bed by his or herself. Although, depending on the part of the country you are located. In a much colder country, It is advisable to put the mattress on a floor bed and not directly on the floor this would help to prevent mold from growing in it and for efficient airflow. Warmer/hotter country rarely ever have mold problem. Well done mama, you are doing your best for your family.

I live in Texas we get significantly cold winters even if not that long we still get terribly cold weeks/months and during the summer it is scorching hot and humidity is atrocious. I have the water as hot as I can stand it and get in and new pain over rides old pain so the pain from the hot water gives me relief from my normal pain. I'd sit there all day if I could because it's truly wonderful, but sadly i have to get out after 6 minutes because I'll start to overdose from my medication as the heat makes you blood run faster and makes my medication go into my system faster, so I usually get out when my head starts to go fuzzy lol

I had this happen to me! If you do a floor bed on carpet you need to have airflow under it or moisture from your body gathers underneath. Lifting it off the floor to air out needs to be done every few days +/- depending.

If you lift the mattress and lean it upright every couple of days to air it out its not a problem, but if you leave it on the floor all the time it can develop mould - mattresses arent designed to sit directly on the floor, they need airflow underneath to stop mould growing.

I love Montessori teaching and early childcare! I didn’t get early care, but from 5th to 8th grade I was in Montessori and my mom is teaching there now as well. I do think that it’s helpful to say that Montessori teaching works for many, but not all. Sometimes it’s hard to insinuate that drive to set goals. I don’t struggle with that much, but I was VERY anxious about starting highschool, because the stigma Montessori teachers have against public schools in the US is dreadful. I was told I would sit in a classroom with drug addicts and kids got beat up and no one would care about my issues, or my grades. I actually adjusted well. My state has IEP and 504 plans, even in the less financially secure areas, and we are incredibly low on the education list. I have all As, and am receiving all the support I could possibly need.

If you think about it, this way, your kid won’t come bothering you or crying to get out of bed. They can get them selves out of bed and play with their toys while you sleep in.
