I get that you want to keep these more accessible without investing in a lot of tools, but I think getting a wet tile saw and then cutting the edge tiles using the edge lines you made before adhering them would have made a better final result. A thicker flashing, as you mentioned would have been good. A copper flashing might have been interesting with the black. A plunge router/dremmel tied to the string might have made the circle easier. Using the metal band sticking up and doing some colored epoxy might be an interesting table design as well.

This was good timing for this project. Recently a local bar was renovating their building. The building is from the early 1900's I went down there to dig thru their dumpster 'cause I remembered they have the original white penny round tiles in the bathrooms. So, I have a bunch of them, but not nearly enough survived to tile my whole bathroom.. But, a coffee table is doable. :)

Another interesting thing could be - black penny tiles, and then get white grout and mix up a few different rainbow colors with little batches of the main quantity. You'd have to be careful about the colors mixing, but it could be pretty interesting to have the grout "pop".

Quick set Thin-set hardens way faster depending and it can be for outside (lasts really long). Also, you could get chemical drying thin-set instead of air-drying type so it will dry even covered in grout if its still wet. Doing the tittle things really helps with tile.

I really like this A LOT, but there is only one minor change I would have made, and it wouldn't even change the looks of your table at all. I would have painted the underside of the table black, not only to make it blend in, should there ever be a need to look at the underside of the table, but more importantly, to seal and protect the wood. GREAT PROJECT!!!!!!

Why u cut the round piece from the middle of the square one?why not from one corner and you have a bigger piece left to use after?isn't that a waste?
@Ste74H4 жыл бұрын
I've incorporated mosaic patterns in some of my projects before and the best way to get a smooth flush tiled edge is to use tile pincers which can be used as the adhesive/grout dries. It's fairly easy to do and doesn't take that much time. If you use a power tool, wait till it's cured and fully dry and clamp it down to minimise movement and cut it with straight passes until it forms a curve, similarly how a circle could be can be cut on a bandsaw if you're less confident than following the line. Overall it looks good.

Wouldn't just trowling on the construction adhesive have saved time and been cleaner.
@samb85094 жыл бұрын
I think a couple of reasons. First I have used that construction adhesive and it starts drying very fast so if he put all of it on and then laid the tiles down it would probably not have adhered to the tiles before drying. Also it comes in a tube so how would one trowl it all on? Squeezing it all out and then spreading it around with a trowl seems like it takes more time than just squeezing it on the back of the tiles. I also think it is easier to see how much you are working with if you are used to squeezing it out since it takes a different amount of regular adhesive than it takes tile mortar to get something to adhere. Squeezing it out on the tile seems way easier and faster than trying to trowl it on.
@janemh58664 жыл бұрын
He even said in the video, he only wanted it on tbe tiles not in the gaps as it would show through, trowelling would end up with it filling between all the tiles

Hi Mike, you always do such great videos and this is another! The issue that you had with cutting the tile at the edge is a valuable lesson to present. That black grout almost looks slate-like where it's wider, so it might have been good to remove a few more of the penny tiles all the way around. I think if I were to recreate this, I'd probably make the table shape a hexagon though. Looking forward to more of your videos. TFS
