Through simple observation and putting our minds to it, we can solve anything. Good message to society. 😉

Orange is the power, (EXC )IS THE PURPLE WIRE( Excitation wire) , SENSING WIRE IS RED /PURPLE (S) , GROUND WIRE IS (E) . It might take you some time to find it but what I did was download and print off a Mercury marine Manual #23 for 454 and 502 engines . It lists everything from wiring diagrams to rebuilding a distributer to Torq specs on every single nut and bolt.

This is huge, thank you. Purchased a alternator with one yellow wire = exc wire purple. But will I need the other pink wire for anything? The sencing wire.

Thanks for that 👍

Thanks for the tutorial. I have single 454 in a 1993 Bayliner and just changed my alternator.

The other reason for doing the maintenance is that you know “what” was done & you learn your boat systems.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I've tried telling folks that for years, but many are too timid to even look at their mechanical systems, let alone work on them 😟

It is definitely not easy working on the engines when your a big guy. There is zero room for legs and feet! Nice job.

I just changed the steering cable on my tiny 16’ sea ray. I couldn’t handle what the marine mechanics wanted for it $$. with a little elbow grease I did it myself. Now with the money I saved I took the wife out for steak dinner and a corona !

My alternator does not seem to be charging the battery. The purple and red wire lead to nowhere on mine. I think i read they are the excite and tach but i could be wrong. From my understanding the excite gets the alternator working if it sits for a long time and loses its magnetism which causing it not to kick on and charge the battery i guess. Still trying to figure it all out. Wish this video showed where those wires connect to in the boat

Great Channel ... did you say you spend $10,000 (on maintenance) every year? Or were you trying to make a point? I' am estimating to budget about 6 % of the boat value per year ... considering a used 310 at $70,000, that would be $4,200 per year. Am I crazy?

Does anyone know what the purple and pink quick connection wires are used for, and if they are needed?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo Жыл бұрын
Glad to read that someone knew the answer, because I had no idea. When I swapped the alternator, I just did one for one wire.

@@BoatingWithBoogaboo awesome video, I forgot to add. Saved me 700, God bless you. Yes from what it looks like and from what I researched I think I will be ok without pink wire, especially if you were. I was thinking it would mess up the reading behind the dash. The purple wire is the ignition start wire. (Ext)

For a sanity check, did you take the old alternator into an auto store for a free diagnostic?
@BoatingWithBoogaboo3 жыл бұрын
Nope. Just put it in the box and set it aside for future reference 😉

So, sew buttons. Old girlfriend. Did you cross price a standard alternator vs the "marine" version? What, What, What? A boat is a hole in the water in which you throw money. Is it worth it? Yes. For me just the mental health of being on the water was worth it.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo3 жыл бұрын
Didn't price around.
