Bokashi composting is a great way to reduce waste and help produce a nutrient rich and healthy top soil for growing plants. This composting is an indoor method and can work in an area as small as a 400 sq ft apartment without a bad smell!
This video shows you and optional DIY method of creating a Bokashi bucket that is cost-effective and straightforward.
FYI. If you are looking for in-depth information about Bokashi composting, please check out the following video.

I was considering spending over $100 to buy some bokashi bins online, but I decided to do a quick search here first. I'm so glad I came across this video! This bucket system is much larger, more durable, and costs a fraction of what a commercial container goes for. Thanks for your detailed instructions and for the great thinking with the grit guard!

Hi from Australia! Apparently Gamma Seal lids don’t fit our metric size buckets but I found Bar’s Bugs brand bucket with similar screw top lid and matching grit guard. Flip taps from eBay. Including postage it’s about half the price of a commercial bokashi bin and is better to use than the one I have with awkward push on lid and screw tap. Thanks for the video!

One potential enhancement I am considering as I build this system is the use of “food safe” buckets vs the non-food grade Loews/HD category. One workaround would be to coat the inside of any bucket with a wax layer.

Another consideration is swapping the grit catch for small gravel in the base. Obviously these devices are designed for automotive use cases so won’t be of the food safe variety.

ChickFilet (sp?) will give you free pickle buckets if you ask nicely. I assume they're food safe since they had food in them. They do eventually become brittle, however, if they've been outdoors for a few years. I don't know if other 5-gal buckets do that.

Great bucket. It's the best DIY one I've seen thus far. The only thing that I would add is a flat spatula or something that can push down the compost to remove the air. Wonderful video. I'm your first subscriber. Lol

Thanks so much. I actually use a potato masher to compact the compost, but after you mention the spatula I went out and found one at a thrift store, and it works way better! Thanks for the subscription! I am making a video how to make the EM solution next so stay tuned!!

I saw someone use just a plate to push down the compost and then leave it on top to help the anaerobic process along.

I think you could buy another grit guard and a lid. Cut the rim from the lid and hotglue the disc onto the grid side of the grit guard. Use the X as a handle when pushing compost down

Great bucket idea. I think I'm going to have to upgrade!! I've been bokashi fermenting for several years now and have some concerns with your system. May I ask how long you've been using this set up? Have you run into any problems? Also, you may want to consider not using the term "compost tea" for the leachate. They are not the same thing and have different applications. I'm anxious to hear how things are working out for you :)

Hello! Thanks for the compliment. I haven't been using this method for very long. I am very much a beginner at this. I have had few problems with the composing when I first started. I made my own EM because the type I was using in the video was not cutting it. Recently I purchase a bag of classic Bokachi mix and I am seeing great improvements. As for the bucket. I have not had an issue that I know of. I would appreciate any design feedback! The design has got room to improve for sure.

How about using a pasta colander from Dollar Tree?. Of course.. the handles would have be trimmed down to allow it to fit in the bucket...but the holes are really small in a colander keeping food out of the liquid collection compartment.

You can also buy the dry bokashi product..it's usually made from inoculated bran hull a 2.2lb bag is around $11.00 and last a pretty long time. Videos on KZbin show you how to make your own bokashi.. if you're inclined.
