You could also use just chipboard and then take a the protective cover off a hardback, that way the book is completely intact but you still have the cover design!

you can still read it. you're just taking the the hardcover for a better use. you could also go to your local thrift store and get a large hardcover book that you like but find no use with the cover. it would be cheap as well. or just don't use a book at all and use cardboard to trace out the dimensions so you're using the same proportions but not the book cover since that's 'stupid'
