Just a quick mention: If your 45 degree corners aren’t perfect to your expectations, grind some brick dust and lay a bead of clear caulking along the joint. As the caulk to shrink and set-up you can sprinkle the dust into the joint and it will make your cut appear virtually invisible. Play around with it and you’ll get a nice looking mitre.

Great tips on building the foundation with a trench, gravel and sand. I especially like how you used the 4' level to scrape the top smooth before laying the bricks. Most videos show laying and leveling one brick at a time. I like your method better. And congratulation on the upcoming birth of your daughter.

O M G after searching for freaking weeks I FINALLY found a video that is EXACTLY what I am looking for!!! So my grandfather has a cement patio that was surrounded with a TON of weeds etc. My grandpa had 2 heart attacks and fell and can no longer work on the backyard like he wanted to. Me being a girl lol and someone who has never done landscaping before..I though " screw that! I can do anything " I busted my butt and I removed all of the weeds and other debris..it took me awhile. I finally was able to afford material for the border I wanted to create around the concrete patio. At first I used a weed killer, weed preventive fabric and then placed edging against the cement of the patio. My first thought was to put down the quick dry concrete mix and then lay the bricks...while adding the edging AFTER laying the bricks..to give it a good hold that is shaped and clean..someone came by and told me to put the edging first...which against my better judgment I went and did. Smh. It was really hard and there was a ton of space between the brick and patio. Ultimately I wanted to find a video of a similar situation to make sure I do it right the first time. I now need to remove the edging and relay the concrete. Ugh. Had I found this before I would have been done. I haven't had enough to afford finishing it and wanted it to be perfect so I could surprise my grandfather. I'm wondering how I may get ahold of you to show you a few photos of what I've done? Please let me know! Thanks so much!

I just did this today under the hot florida sun. I definitely did the foot thing leveling the soil. Didnt come out professional looking. But it got done. Also trying to avoid weeds growing into my pavement. Not an easy task. Especially when your not a pro. Lol

Nice video. Using a circular saw (or even a chop saw) with a masonry blade will give you smoother 45 degree angels for those corners. I prefer the chop saw since it cuts in precise angles and I don't have to worry about marking the angles.

quick question: i will be doing the same, but why not use leveling sand like any other pavers installation instead of concrete?
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andres. Good question. Because I have an awkward elevation on one side of my walkway I had to use something more substantial. Many people are affrade to use concrete since the brings may not stay adhered over time but I feel if you install the concrete and the brick correctly then the concrete should hold up. every single prick I laid is still there and hasn't moved an inch.

@@HeyStripes No, I didn't do it. A brick layer told me that in order for the row of bricks to hold the weight of a car, I'd have to build a "footing" before laying the row of bricks. Basically, without the footing the row of bricks will tumble to the side under the weight of the car. I never looked into how to build a footing. Maybe it's easy to do?

one thing do not use any conrete :D brick walkaway you must lay on sand doh, same for side of walkaway. cement will start to crack after time and you will seecrack on sideway too . And you will need to redone all not one tile. You use sand as you need to fix walkaway you just replace one tile and job done.
@BYOTools
@BYOTools 5 жыл бұрын
Arturas nesakysiu I would agree with the sand comment in most circumstances but I had an odd decline on one of the sides and I needed something much sturdier then sand. Wanted to try concrete out and see if it would last. It’s been over two years now and I have had ZERO issues with the brick separating from the concrete. If I get separation in future I will be posting about it on my Instagram but nothing yet. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video! I have a couple of questions. I've seen edging like this being done with a mixture of paver sand and Portland cement. Do you see any disadvantages of using this mixture vs. a pure concrete mix like you did? Also, do you think adding a plastic edging along the bricks (like you would for a paver walkway) is overkill for this project?

I have a few projects on my list to do around my property that I’m thinking this method would work great for.. a retaining wall to build up and level the grade by the adjacent apartment building fence.. foundation for a back yard deck and storage building... and last but not least my driveway.

The water main. You did not plan something for it? You just left it like that? Why not design the project with it in mind, so the whole thing didn’t end up wrong after all that work?

What are you talking about Michael? The WHOLE sidewalk is designed around this idiotically placed water main. Why do you think my sidewalk isn't just straight? Its in three different sections for a reason unfortunately LOL! Thanks for watching though and hope you enjoyed most of the video.

BYOT I enjoyed the whole video until the end and then I screamed. If I had something like that I would re-design the walkway - I would start by getting rid of that existing walk that was designed by someone who does not love you. The accent brick ending at the water main now serves to accentuate the problem. Break that walkway out and put a bush or something over that Watermain to hide it, and make a beautiful curved walkway surrounded by amazing plants that make the front of your house look beautiful.

Did you mean to say "tiled floor"? If so, how much cement are we talking about? haha

Concrete seems better then rock and sand. So why don’t more people use that

Nice video! If you would wet the side of the brick that will contact the concrete, and maybe, if you are anal as this engineer, brush on some cement on the brick to ensure it is all the crooks and crannies of the the brick, your bricks “never” break bond and come loose.

Great Tip RH. I've never done that before but I understand why it would work. bricks are in tack and haven't broken free yet so I must have done something right haha. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.

instead it called cement until it dries? then it hardens to become concrete? its confusing.....
@BYOTools

Its actually should always be called concrete. Cement is just included in the mix of concrete. Good call. Thanks for watching HK.

Grey bricks would have looked nicer. I think a bit concrete to haunch them in better would be good also
