DIY Bumblebee Transformers Costume for Halloween - Step by Step Tutorial

I built a DIY Transformers costume for my 5 year old!! And it is awesome!

Building a Transformers Costume
If you want to put a smile on your kids face then you should build this DIY Bumblebee Transformers Costume for them.
Not going to lie, this Cardboard Transformers Costume was not easy to build. It took over 20 hours but that includes many mistakes. It was well worth it though after seeing my 5 year old's face once it was ready to try on.
In this Bumblebee Transformers costume tutorial I am going to show step by step exactly how to build this Bumblebee costume.
This kids Transformers costume didn't cost much at all. You could actually build it for under $100. It took me about 20 hours to build this DIY Bumblebee costume but that is because I had many lessons learned and had to figure out things that were not shown in the tutorial I was watching.
This homemade Transformers costume is basically cardboard and Styrofoam. You will need a glue gun and some silicon to mend everything together. Then you just need some paint to make the homemade Bumblebee costume look really good.
For this Transformers costume, I plan to develop a downloadable build plan with a material list so you don't have to go to Home Depot 10 times like I did. I am going to make building this DIY costume easy for you.
Until I get that out - here is the material list to help you get started
- Extra Large Heavy Duty Cardboard (two ply)
- Large Cardboard Boxes - (single ply)
- Paint Mixing Sticks (Large & Small)
- Industrial Strength Velcro (2" x 5 ft)
- Styrofoam - Extruded Polystyrene Insulation (1" x 24" x 48")
- Fabric Strip (Polypropylene / Nylon) (1-1/4" Thick)
- 3/4" Weather Stripping
- Reflective Tape / Red & White (2" x 18")
- Primer - Aerosol Spray used in Video
- Paint - Aerosol Spray used in Video
- Sandable - Caulking White
- Sandable - Caulking Black
- Sanding Block - Medium
- Sanding Block - Finishing
- 600 Grit Sand Paper
- 3M Spray Adhesive
Whether you are making this to have the best Halloween Transformers costume or just want to wear it around the house, this DIY costume is perfect.
We built this Bumblebee Transformers costume for Halloween and it was a huge hit. Using our build plans you can make the same DIY Transformers Halloween costume or simplify it and make a less complex cardboard box robot. Either way, your child is going to be so happy and have the best Halloween Transformers Costume on the block.

@@Confused_Elio , This is made with cardboard and Styrofoam insulation. I am sure you could just make it only out of cardboard but wouldn't be able to get the nice shape. not sure if that answers your question. :)

Love it! The effort involved and design is inspiring. Pro tips with Bondo if I may; Apply more than you need, then use the rasp/surform to shape it, especially the high ridges, just when it's no longer soft but in a firm but tacky state, you have to be careful though. Usually after about 10 minutes. Don't leave bondo to fully harden before working it. You can sand it as soon as it stops clogging paper and well before it's fully hard. This will save you a lot of energy and time. My most valuable tip: When applying bondo, put loads on, then shape it with a clean blade. Clean your blade off each time you want to shape the bondo. It's life changing when you figure that one out.

Hey, I would say take your time with sculpting the styrofoam and you won't need to use either.. won't be as good as a finish but the easi-fil is too brittle. I heard if you add some fiberglass resin to the bondo it's easier to work with, but takes longer to dry.

Hey, I am super sorry, I have no idea and dont have this documented. I would say get your little human to go in this position and take a measurement from top of head to feet. give a couple inches on the back and a few up front and you should be good. hope this helps..

If we can’t find the duplicate-color primer anywhere what other primer and spray paint could we use to color the car

Any paint primer will work or a combination paint (yellow) and primer. If you paint directly onto cardboard any acrylic paint will do. You may need to do several layers to desired color. If you go this route I suggest using mod podge a large jar more than 8oz 12:52 to seal the paint. Always by extra paint and sealer. Rather have extra than needing more.

Few things… The frame. The tapered portion of the frame is 4”. So subtract that from the total length desired for your long sticks. The side tabs should be 2.5” long so they protrude 1”. The paint stick pieces flanking the coat hanger can’t be within 2 1/4” from the edge to allow the Velcro. The cardboard pieces need 1 1/4” added to the desired height for the 1” tabs and 1/4” bend allowance at the bottom. When cutting the foam do not template the wheel wells as they will be set 1 1/4” lower when the cardboard tabs are in use. I cut the foam with a hot wire cutter (way faster). Also be sure to have mirrored sides when using the spray adhesive. I’m only partially done… but these are the lessons from today. I’m sure there are more to come. Thanks!

You never mentioned those lines you made in the middle of the cardboard template. How did you get those measurements and how did you know where to cut for rear fender?

Hey Austin! Nice catch. I totally never got to that as I said I would. The lines in the middle are separating the hood, doors and rear fender. My measurements were. 12" for the front section, about 9.5" for the middle section and 12.5 " for the rear section. These measurements do not include the 1" tab that is used for glue. Keep in mind these are just suggested measurements. I would use a piece of cardboard to replicate how you want it to look and figure out the perfect dimensions to make it look realistic. If I do this again I would actually make the car about 1" wider. Hope this helps. Good luck on your transformers costume.

Hey! So sorry for the delayed response.. Excellent choice for your 5 year old.. I just checked my bill of materials and I didnt even keep track of that :(. If I am not mistaken I used 4 large mixing sticks for the frame. I only used the small mixing sticks to mark the rims. Go to Home Depot and they will give you as many as you say you need. usually the large sticks are behind the counter. I hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions.
