Excellent. That was nice and smooth, and takes nice dolly shots. I definitely like the idea of putting together own dolly and dolly track....but here's another three cheap options:- 1) Wear roller skates/inline skates. 2) Put a tripod on top of a chair with wheels, ideally a swivel chair, then you have panning and dolly in one! 3) Use a skateboard.

I film skateboarding and I have a "filmer board" that has big jelly longboard wheels that I sometimes use as a cheap dolly. It works really good if you're filming on level ground, but other than that can get pretty shaky. I'm definitely going to make a dolly like this one.

Best home built dolly I've seen so far on the net! you really can't see the difference in smoothness compared to the Konova one lol I will def giv it a try.. it would cool if you guys put a blue print aka drawing somewhere to download..just to see how the wheels have been positioned and at what angle! keep up the good work ;)

The problem I'm having so far is if the angles of the wheels aren't absolutely precise, the dolly rolls right off the track after you push it a few feet. I don't have a drill press or precision machinery to drill the holes for the wheels at the precise angles. Is there some kind of workaround?
@Tume
@Tume 11 жыл бұрын
How did you get the wheels in the exact right angle? I would like to know because i just bought 8 inline wheels.

@neverhood311 I wouldn't mound a tripod to it. I don't think it would retain it's smoothness. You could build a much larger version of it and then put a tripod on top of that, but for this what we do is simply stack things underneath it to get it at the height we want. Hope that helps

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but every time I rebuild this dolly, the rollerblade wheels just won't stay on the PVC tracks. The dolly keeps rolling off the track to the left or the right. What's wrong here?

@JacanaProductions Not really. The pipes aren't perfectly straight so we're going to see some wheels not touching at certain points. It's not really a concern and doesn't affect the footage. Really just need four points of contact to ensure that we're stable. Nice job noticing, though.

@2dphotography Did you try with only 3 pairs of wheels? I mean 4 points are difficult to adjust exactly on the same plane but 3 always work, it's basic geometry in space. Try an equilateral triangle, it may do the trick. That's also the main reason behind the basic design of a tripod.

But it works 100%. The final results look professional on film/video. And It's not like the viewer of the film/video is going to see the dolly. I've been on big budget sets and they use pretty much the same dolly's. If you don't like to build DIY's you can always spend much much more and get a Konova or the likes for hundreds or thousands more.

Your back wheel got stuck in the middle of the movement, but in general it's one of the easiest and cheapest DIY dolly tutorials I've seen. You're basically spending the most of your money on the overpriced wheels.

The track is way to thick. Use 32mm or even 22mm plastic pipe it'll be much easier to transport if you only have a small car because it isn't as rigid. Keep the length of the pipe to 2 meter lengths and extend them with inserts made from cut off waste pipe. Don't bolt the track to anything it'll be fine just laid on the ground and you can use bean bags to support the track on uneven surfaces. Remember the absolute key here if you don't want this thing to just sit in the garage never being used is, portability!!! If it takes a lot of time to set up and is a hassle to transport from A to B you'll find a reason not to take it with you more often than not. Skate wheels are good but expensive their are cheaper alternatives like rubber twin wheel casters. Or if you do want to spend money for £28 you can buy 4 "U-Groove" wheels with skatewheel bearings in them off Amazon (these are excellent). Mount them using L-Brackets. Or buy one of those folderble dolly's off eBay for £28 and replace the caster wheels with the U-Groove wheels.
