Lots of do-it-yourselfers posting their videos of tent trailer conversions but most don't first offer a disclaimer. Word of caution is necessary. Read my comment so you fully understand it! You'll find that what it all boils down to is your own personal liability for doing such a thing for what is later to be a registered and insured vehicle. Now then..........Doesn't appear to be a 2nd video but it really doesn't matter. Most important thing to remember is that one should be very careful about adding weight to something that was designed and manufactured to specs. for the axle and suspension as well as the tire load(s). I've done 6 conversions, all were originally tent trailers. There's a reason they aren't insulated nor do they originally utilize much more than 1X2's for framing. Pop-up roof weighs approx. 100-200 lbs. for even the larger units. Remove that and start adding much much more for the project and you're exceeding what the whole trailer and frame was designed to carry. Trailer manuals describe how to load up the contents since one is advised to evenly distribute the weight of ALL contents over the axle due to specific requirements for tongue weight (should usually be 10% of total or g.v.w.r.). Notice where the actual axle is positioned? Years of planning and design goes into making such an RV and it all has to work for a variety of tow vehicles and also accepting to a novice or beginner who might gamble on towing it and their family to a campsite.This is a great idea and project but do be very careful if planning on trailering such a unit often. If only towing to a permanent spot or seasonal and it might get towed twice per year, not that much of an issue. Obviously not as aerodynamic as true travel trailers but this project can work as is, for the camping part. Not as much for the towing part though. When deciding to use 2x4's or 2x3's, do yourself a favour and weigh EVERYTHING you add to that frame. I'm talking about all screws, nails, wires, interior and exterior wall materials, paint (yes, that can of it does weigh something) etc.There's a reason it's all spelled out in an owner's manual and ALL specs. are noted. It's actually a law or regulations since they are meant to be towed on public roads. D.O.T. or Department of Transport. TENT trailers are meant to be light(er), they're tents, on a frame. If you overload the suspension, once it's hooked up to a small ball coupler, you'll definitely notice a lot more sway on a conversion and that you would NEVER experience on a true travel trailer with a single axle. After a certain length and a dual axle is required. Don't forget as well, even smaller SUV's or decent 4-door vehicles can pull the lightweight tent type and most don't have an auxilliary braking system if under approximately 2000 lbs. total trailer weight (that's THE whole trailer from tires up, INCLUDING contents/gear). So, add an additional vehicle behind your towing one and no brakes on that RV? Gonna be a big problem since your only connection is either a 1 7/8" or 2" ball and in the event you slam on your tow vehicle's brakes for an emergency, you'll have an additional vehicle trying to push the one in front. Anyone who has towed a trailer can relate as one goes down a hill and without additional brakes, can tell how the trailer weight actually "pushes" down towards the vehicle. SECONDARY or AUXILLIARY brakes are a necessity on large, heavy pull-behinds. Kudos for your project and build and it seemed to turn out okay BUT readers should realize that there's a lot more to keeping everyone else who share the road with you, safe since many a trailer has had or caused an accident due to it being unsafe to tow. P.S. torsion (flex) axles or leafspring suspension? Both have their own specific purposes. Watch someone towing a trailer in front of you on the highway, it's easy to spot a torsion flex axle setup as opposed to the leafspring type. Do note as well, once you modify something like a tent trailer to a travel type and you possibly get into an accident, your insurer is going to be looking closely at it all. Liability: check that out because if you modified what was originally intended to be a lightweight and easy tow-behind, make sure it's certifed as being as safe as the one that was required to be, from the manufacturer. D.O.T. certified. Check out other conversions where some show it being towed and even bouncing around on their own property. I've pulled trailers as small as 8-footers, all the way up to 32-foot fifth wheels and most were quite stable but to make a tent trailer so top heavy is very unsafe. Trust me, if you're a novice it isn't as simple as dropping on what is essentially a shed, on a frame.

They've exceeded what the manufactuer intended. One of my conversions that exceeded the ratings, had an upgraded axle and suspension. ALL trailer manuals spell out how much one can load up for contents/gear, all specify that it needs to be followed due to the original D.O.T. certification which was placed on the recreational vehicle prior to it being made available to "A" consumer. Frames are welded and they too have certain tolerances or max. loads for them.

Three points: I have built a number of custom trailers in my time so I’m familiar not only with load ratings for tires and axles, but also load distribution. You admit you’ve exceeded the manufacturer’s weigh ratings for the tires and axle and you seem to be ok with that. Alrighty then.. I lost interest in this project when, after subscribing, there was no followup video(s) in the following 4 months. Good luck.

The trailer base was not calculated to hold solid OSB walls and 2x4 construction when before it was vinyl and canvas. That's a considerable weight add. If you're not moving it anywhere that's fine. I'd be very nervous taking that on the road.

You need more roof framing. OSB is not structurally sound on its own. It will sag. 16” on center at least

May I suggest using a water tight sealant inside. Plywood does off gas toxic fumes for a very long time.

Jayco trailers are one of the best in North America.

They're one of "manufactuers" but not one of the best. Jayco has always cut quite a few corners as time went by. I've owned 3 -1006 and 1007's and I've repaired many (over 40). I've also done 6 tent trailer to permanent travel type conversions and there have always been better quality manufacturers than Jayco. The Jaycos I've repaired have all been pretty new but off warranty. Other manufacturers have higher standards and pay more attention to detail and consumer wants and needs

It's the cost of lumber, screws, hardware etc. A steel frame with an axle today, is worth about $2500 or so. About an 8 or 10-foot tent trailer model size.

I've posted other comments above (long ones). It isn't that aerodynamic (obviously) and since it's actually TOP HEAVY-ie: heavier than it would be if it was an actual travel trailer, it's unsafe. Axle placement for a small trailer isn't just a guess or the manufacturer decides to place it wherever they feel like. Admittedly, lost of projects like this attempted, very few know to work out the specs. to make sure it complies with D.O.T. safety etc. Think about it, place 2 snowmobiles on a flatdecked trailer and those machines are maybe 36" in height, 2 machines, each about 400-500 lbs. A single axle will "sway or shimmy" enough as it is. Now throw on a shed on top of the same decked trailer and you can actually feel it causing the tow vehicle to "shimmy" as well. I once met a person who raised a tent trailer (about a 10-foot model) and kept it permanently raised so he wouldn't have to set it up as he traveled through Canada. Pulled it with a Buick Roadmaster and he complained about poor gas mileage. The drag on that thing would have been excessive to say the least. Quite unsafe too since a tent trailer with a hardtop roof is only supprted by 4 telescopic lifts. Sway alone from light winds at a campsite will make the things shake pretty good......
