Okay... candle maker stepping in. I know that these are repeat videos, but I post on them all. Basic Candle Making Tips: Use a thermometer. Wax has melting point and flash points. Keep an eye on how to melt the waxes. I prefer a double boiler on medium heat (makes it easier to monitor). When using a container, secure the wick with putty or hot glue to the bottom. Fragrances also have flash points. Add your fragrances off the heat (I can't stress that enough), and don't add until the candle wax is cooled a little to prevent your fragrance smelling less than what you intended. Always save candle wax from the initial pour, in case your candle has sink holes or needs topping up. Experiment, and keep notes of what works, what doesn't work. Mica Candles: please don't do this. Mica, like resins and glues, will clog up your wick. It won't burn easily, if at all. Sure, it looks nice. But it's not feasible in large amounts. Get dyes made for candles, or use 1/4 of that amount for a large batch (ie: a quarter to half of a pot of eyeshadow, depending on size). If you like glitter in the candles, use small amounts of finely ground glitter, and don't cover the tops of the candles with it. You want the candle to burn wax, not plastic glitter. Teacup Candles: I'm all for reusing old wax, but that is the most unsafe way to heat wax. Never, never, never heat wax on direct heat, especially in glass containers. Unless you like fires, or glass breaking. Rather, place the candles in a pot of water, the water about halfway up the sides of the candle containers, and heat on medium to medium-high heat. More controlled, less chance of damage. Dragon Egg Candle: Wow... I personally hate this candle. Love the idea, but this method leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, crayons to dye wax: in VERY SMALL AMOUNTS. Not five bloody crayons! Use candle dyes! Second: the mold. Please, use candle molds. There are specialty ones that come in the shape of an egg. It is far safer, and you don't run the risk of hurting yourself, or melting the mold. Please, don't use spray paint to color candles. Even if it is non-flammable, it can be toxic as it burns. Use an over-dip technique: melting wax of a darker color and dipping your egg candle in and out of it to the desired color. Aromatherapy Candles: by far, the best technique from the bunch. My only critiques? Wait a little longer to add your essential oils, as they can be volatile and dissipate at higher temperatures. It depends on the wax and oil, but 150-160F is a safe bet. Soy Candles from Scratch: Invest in your tools. Candle pouring pots are available at craft stores. If you're going to make candles for fun and don't want specific tools that you're never going to use again, use a Pyrex glass container. Again, don't add the fragrance/essential oils on the heat. Add when off the heat and cooled until 150-160F. Don't reuse wick tabs: once they're crimped closed, it is a bitch and a half to thread wicks through them. They're cheap: get new ones. Hope this helps new potential craftspeople!
