FYI, when using the torque wrench a single smooth stroke is recommended for the stroke where it clicks. Once it clicks you're done and you don't need to do 2nd and 3rd strokes to verify the click.

That "sealing ring" is called a crush washer and you should use a new one every time. Also cheap oil filters can collapse in the housing and cause major problems. Use quality parts like Mahle or buy directly from porsche. Just some advice from a guy who only drives porsches. Just got a 996TT to join my 957.1, my 79' 930, and my daughters 986S.

Just FYI, the oil fill tube disconnects from the housing - makes it a bit easier getting the 8 quarts in.
@vsvenson12 жыл бұрын
You should not overfill the oil - it will cause problems. The turbo shares the dry-sump engine with the GT3 model. On these, there is an extra oil drain plug for the "oil tank" - it's kind of by the rear passenger wheel. And, on the turbo, there is actually an oil drain plug on each turbo, too.

Hey Van, as a new Boxster owner and new to DIY maintenance, I must really thank you for these great videos. Reading about it in a book is one thing, but you show us step by step with video how to properly do these things. It takes my anxiety out of it, because I can follow your video and learn to do it myself, and you have a nice, calm and detailed way of explaining things. What's the best way to support the car when working under it safely? Jack stands? Keep them coming!

I don't remember exactly. I think the sales representative I was dealing with was saying it was a few hundred dollars which isn't bad if you follow their oil change intervals, but I would still change my oil every 5000 km.

Nice job as always Sven, excellent for the new DIYers. One critical mistake however that I think is worth mentioning; e.g., oil capacity in the 3.4 996. It is NOT 8.75 Quarts of oil, it is 8.75 liters. In American-speak, that translates to 9.25 quarts. Nothing to slash your wrists in shame over! Most "certified technicians" at the dealerships make the same mistake and also fail to compensate for the filter. What to do with that remaining .75 (quart) of oil? Charge the new filter. O.K., carry on Sven. Happy motoring!

Checking the old oil filter for metal filings is a critical step in changing oil on a 996/997 to catch any early evidence of a pending IMS failure.

Van, Thanks for the post, very clear and informative. How have you enjoyed owning your 996 3.4? I own a 991 C4S but am looking to get a 996 on the cheap ($23k or so) just to putter around in and be able to work on myself. It seems like my best option is a 2001 or so 3.4 with under 45k miles. How has your reliability been, and how are your maintenance costs? I would appreciate a response!

Great instruction video. I just changed the oil on my 1999 996 C2 yesterday. Do you have a lift at home? I've been considering one. My car just turned 102k and at warm idle, I hear a light random rattle. I've read that this is common with these engines and could be the chain tensioners however I do believe it still has the original (dual row) IMS bearing so I am getting ready to change it of piece of minds sake. Being a car nut all my life, I've always done all my major work on our cars however I am not looking forward to doing this at all.

Van, quick question concerning the IMS bearing: I have an 02 996 with just under 40k on the clock. Would you recommend having the retro-fit installed? Also, on the 996, what oil do you recommend? I noticed a poster recommended the Motul 8100: any thoughts?Thanks!
@vsvenson8 жыл бұрын
For a low-mileage 996 (or 986) the IMS bearing retrofit is a great idea. It's a pretty cheap insurance policy compared to a $15k engine! I always used Mobil 1, because that's what the car came with - but many people have had good results from any name-brand oil that meets Porsche's specs.
@neilgalli70177 жыл бұрын
question regarding where the oil filter cartridge slides onto. When I unscrewed the plastic housing and pulled off the old filter I had a metal piece with a spring, come off with the cartridge. I have no idea why it came off with the old filter but when I reinstalled everything I was getting a low oil pressure warning. I went back and removed that 'extra' piece and oil pressure was back to normal. In this video I do not see that 'extra piece'. I am baffled and last oil change was over a year ago and do not remember that piece being an issue .Is there a way to attach a photo of that piece?

the socket you used for the oil filter is it universal in all porsches? or european cars? i didn't quite understand great video :)

If there are no metal shavings in the filter and no visible leaks, is it a good idea to wait and do the LN IMS and RMS during a clutch job? Sounds like there wouldn't be an urgency given no shavings or leaks and if you drive the car in the 3k+ rpm range as it is intended.
@pl78683 жыл бұрын

I just bought a 03 Boxster S with 60 K Miles and after driving it for just 500 Miles, it over heated and when I opened the trunk, the dreaded 'Mochachino' was oozing out of the radiator cap. The Heatexchanger was removed and turned out to be OK. The Cam shaft was replaced by the previous owner , as were the head Gaskets, 6 months ago. Any idea where the problem might be? I'm really bummed! I was in heaven for the few short days that I drove it

You should add that Mobil 1 oil is horrible for these engines and Motul 8100 Excess 5w 40 or Joe Gibbs DT40 oil should be used as flat6innovations suggests after extensive oil analisis of the m96 and m97 engines.

Van, I have an 04 996 with 54K miles. Is the oil change the same process? Also, I am wondering about the IMS bearing. I had a PPI at the Porsche dealership the car was regularly services at and the head machanic said he has been working on that specific car for the last 5 years and he said they cut the filter every oil change and have not found any metal particles. Should I still get the IMS retrofit?
@vsvenson8 жыл бұрын
There's no definitive answer... You might pay to change the bearing, and find the old bearing was just fine - but you'd have the piece of mind. Or you might not replace it, and 3 years from now have a failure that'll cost $15k to repair - or you might not. Personally, I think replacing it is a "reasonable insurance policy". :)

Is 2oo1 966 turbo oil change .. same procedure ? Thx
@vsvenson11 жыл бұрын
It's a little different, because it's based on a different engine design. There's a plug at the bottom of the case, and also a plug at the bottom of the sump tank, which is kind of close to the rear-passenger side wheel. There are also drain plugs at the bottom of each turbo charger. And it might take more than 9 quarts of oil, too.

Its called intermix, and it is very bad. It means that coolant is leaking into your oil, usually by way of a blown head gasket. Your engine will fail shortly, I advise consulting a qualified mechanic very quickly.
