it can be even cheaper if you integrate the piezo into the bass pedal and olso you don't need a real snare to convert it to DIY you can make a wooden circle and place the piezo on it and then the foam...I think it would be the same...I like this video for giving me the idea of the rack it does the job and looks great! I want to know how did you add so many parts to the module? I mean you have a lot of cymbals,crashes and rides... can you tell me pls? thx! keep up the good work!
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
Hi, I wanted to make a set that would feel as real as possible. Piezo in a bass pedal, and a wooden circle snare isn't good enough. I wouldn't like to play such a set. I am glad the video helped you. And to your question: Connecting many parts to one module is easy. In my module every input is Stereo, which means you can split it to 2 Mono inputs using an adapter. That way you can connect 2 single zone drums/cymbals, instead of one instrument that has 2 zones.

@arfaxad7735 жыл бұрын
How did you do the connection for the ride cymbal ?? How do you get the bell sound out of the module ?? I mean what are the settings
@ohad4695 жыл бұрын
The ride is a 2 zones cymbal, it has 2 piezos, one on the bow and one on the bell. When I hit the bell, the module produces a bell midi note, and a bell sound is played on top of that. Both piezos are connected through a stereo input in the module.
@keithwoodcrest8 жыл бұрын
Dude. That sounded waaayy better than I anticipated it was going to. That's awesome. I have an Alesis Dm7X 6-piece kit, my first ekit in 26 years of playing and I love it. What module are you using to power the kit? I dig the cymbal sounds a lot
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
+Brian Homan Thanks! I'm using an Alesis Trigger I/O module, it produces only midi notes (no sounds). The cymbal sounds are from Superior Drummer (drums vst).
@alexisvidal62008 жыл бұрын
Dude this is awesome...! I see that you're kidding the bell and the crash side of the cymbal, at 4:04, and the sound actually changes, is this superior drummer is well? I have the same question but for the hi hat, how do you manage to change between open and closed and in between? This is frantically awesome bro! Good job! :)
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude, You must have an analogue hi hat pedal, and a module that supports that feature. Once you have these, all that's left is configuring your VST or module.

Hi. Can you please tell me about your hihat setup? I have got the alesis trigger io.. I am going to buy low volume cymbals. I am going to put piezo’s on the cymbals, but not sure how to go about the hihat? What did you do and how do you control it? Look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance.
@ohad4693 жыл бұрын
I made it from a of a top part of a real Hihat, with a single piezo. I also bought a hihat pedal to control the open/close position (which connects to the trigger IO). Last thing to do is configure Superior Drummer to work with the pedal.
@mstr_anderson3 жыл бұрын

Great job. I love how resourceful you are, plus all the meticulous planning etc Is the kit driven by a module/brain, or hooked up to a computer to generate the actual sounds?
@ohad4699 жыл бұрын
carpii Thanks a lot! I had to do some planning before diving into this project :) Yes. The kit is driven by a module: Alesis Trigger IO, which is hooked up to a PC.

Ohad Blaier Great work, Ohad - just one Q - are the drum tones stored on the PC or does Alesis allow to store tones to play this kit live if need be? guru prasad
@ohad4699 жыл бұрын
Ravi Srinivasan Thanks! This Alesis module only produces Midi notes, so the sounds are stored on the PC.
@Drew-sc4rk8 жыл бұрын
wicked!! Howd you manage to link your pressure sensors to the alesis? You wire that yourself?
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
:) You solder the end of the Piezo to a PL guitar cable (1/4"), and then connect it to the Trigger IO.
@Drew-sc4rk8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! What is the exact name of the piezo you used? is it velocity sensitive?
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. All piezos are velocity sensitive, unless mentioned otherwise... Here's what it looks like: uk.farnell.com/productimages/standard/en_US/5022022.jpg I used a regular piezo from Ebay, the smallest I could find. There are few sizes you can get, the smaller it is, the less sensitive.

noticed some ghost triggers on the kick drum… was that something you adjusted out of it?
@ohad4698 жыл бұрын
+Sean Sweeney You need a good subwoofer/headphones to hear the bass drum since it is a very low frequency. The song wasn't edited in any way, just a straight record. Also, the bass drum in the kit is a standalone unit (I used an old subwoofer as you can see in the video) so no vibrations from other components can cause ghost triggering.
@SEANFIR8 жыл бұрын
i'm listening to this through JBL 4412A studio monitors… they go down to 20hz… was just hearing some ghost triggers on the kick it seemed…

hey. Just found your video on DIY electric kit. Any chance you can give me more info or a separate video on the cymbals? - i want to make E CYMBALS for my kit. cheers
@ohad4697 жыл бұрын
Yeah, In what step do you need help?
@craigkopacz29057 жыл бұрын
all of it? i want to make roland cymbals but in full sizes.
@ohad4697 жыл бұрын
Ok: First Step: You need to muffle your cymbal. I used double sided tape, and covered the lower part of the whole cymbal. Step Two: stick a PVC sheet (you can see the material in my video) to the double sided tape, that will dampen the cymbal's sound. Step Three: Cut a small circle through the PVC and the double sided tape, and stick a Piezo sensor directly to the cymbal (you can do that step before step one, but I found this way to be easier). connect the Piezo to a 1/4" input (guitar cord output). These are the basics. If you want to do more advanced stuff, you can make 2 circles, one on the edge of the bow, and one on the bell of the cymbal, that way you can create a 2 zoned cymbal (I did it on my ride cymbal but it's not in the video). You can also search around for ways to choke the cymbal. Feel free to ask more questions. I also recommend that you watch the cymbal's part in my video again, now you know the details of the step.

Idk if someone already asked this, but how loud is the physical kit in the room?
@ohad4697 жыл бұрын
Michael Hall Hi, It wasn't asked. The snare and drums make a little noise (you can use fiberglass as a mesh head which will make them silent - also for the bass drum). The cymbals do make noise, But if you play with in-ear headphones you won't hear them. I drum with in ear headphones, and muffler headphones on top for complete silence.

It's the best material to use for E-Drums. I am sorry but I didn't record the updates I did to my Kit, but this method is quite common and you can find many videos of it on youtube. Search for:"diy mesh head" and you'll see what I mean.
