HELLO, PLEASE READ IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS DRESS!
This is a tutorial designed for beginning sewers - that will give you more experience in sewing by teaching you how to make a very simple dress! PLEASE NOTE: It's not an exact method for making a dress (we don't have exact seam allowances, for example), but it generally will work out pretty well. Just make sure that you keep trying on & fitting the dress to your body to see where it needs to be more fitted, or more relaxed, and where darts may need to be added, etc. It may not work as well for people with particularly large busts. While this method does work for most people (see #diyannika on instagram for heaps of examples!) if you're having lots of trouble getting the right fit, then I would recommend 1. playing around with the pattern by changing the curve of the armholes and slope of the shoulders and 2. getting any random thrift-shop pattern that has a bodice piece to help you base your own pattern off. You will probably need to alter and play around with the bodice pattern a little bit until you find one which works for you. That's why I recommend using some cheap material like bedsheets for your first dress, haha.
***If you're more experienced in sewing, and want to find a pattern that will fit you more exactly, then this isn't the tutorial for you.***
FABRIC
The fabric that I used was an old thrifted bedsheet that I got second-hand for $5! I recommend using something like this for your first few attempts at dress-making, because they're likely to be imperfect (practice makes perfect - this is probably the 9th or 10th dress I've ever made and I'm much better now than when I started out!) However, if you're buying proper fabric specifically for this dress, you'll probably need about 2 meters of the stuff, and it should be light-weight and mostly cotton, but something that doesn't crinkle easily (scrunch the fabric up tight in your hands, then see if the creases remain - if they do, don't buy it for this project because you'll endlessly be ironing your dress).

Just a suggestion for those with large/bigger breasts... you're going to want to make a separate back pattern. If you use the chest pattern for your back, it will be too big and you will need to cut off a LOT of fabric. Second time I made this dress I realized this and made a much neater garment.

Do you have any measure tips on how much smaller the back should be to the chest? I am a very unfortunate 36f so getting tops to fit my chest and waist is really difficult. I'm a beginner sewer and any tips to work with a big chest and small waist are huge helps.

katie stitt after sewing the side seams, put your arms through the top (as if you were wearing it, except the back has the open flaps). Pinch the excess fabric at the top of the flaps, mark it with some chalk, and do the same at the bottom. Add seam allowances, and remember that this is just a guide for how much fabric you'll need to remove. Remember to add room for the zipper or whatever closures you're using.

I've been doing a lot of embroidering lately and have discovered that Frixion brand pens are WONDERFUL for marking fabric! The ink shows up very clearly, but disappears perfectly, with application of a little heat such as an iron, the dryer, or even holding it over a light bulb. Very useful for marking darts, etc. where you need accurately drawn lines but might be afraid of leaving marks. Of course, always test your fabric to be sure. But I have never had a failure yet! I bought mine at a sewing store, and also at a college bookstore.

Oh, yeah, I loved those pens in college, because they erase so cleanly just from the heat of the friction ball on the end. It was great for writing reports. But then one day I left some class notes in my car on a hot sunny day, and... OMG! I never did that again.

+Marialla Did you know that you can actually bring the ink back by placing the papers in a freezer for a couple of minutes? Because the ink is temperature activated, the heat will make it disappear and room temperature won't change it back, but a cold temp shock will! I know it won't help your notes now, but just for future reference!

Just made this dress this morning for my five year old. first I love love the darts in the pattern rather than a tapering waist because it was super easy to just take out the darts and make it age appropriate. I am just learning my way around a sewing machine and this was so easy to follow! Not everyone wants to make 'pillowcase dresses' for their girls, but adult patterns can be hard to adapt. She loves her dress so much she made me subscribe :)

That's pretty vague, I mean, every machine is different :) All of the basics (like threading the needle and changing the stitch) should be in a book that comes with a machine, but they can also be found online if you google the brand of machine.

Hey! I've subscribed to you for a while and your work is fantastic! Now I know this is your first ever KZbin and this IS for beginner sewers, I still want to add in my two cents so beginner sewers watching this can have an alternative way to sew as well haha. it's best to add the lining after sewing the dress fabric together on the shoulder and side seams, then add on the sewn together lining by sewing together the collar and armholes seams right side (the actual side that you want to wear your fabric out), then flipping it inside out, like how Annika did the pieces before sewing them all together. The reason why you want to do this is because the seam allowance (leftover fabric after the stitch on the side so the dress won't fall about if the edges fray a bit) will double up the amount of fabric on the seams. If you sew the pieces then sew them together, you'll be doubling up that seam even more, making the dress bulkier than you need. Also, if you fabric doesn't align because you didn't cut your pieces precise enough, sewing the lining last can prevent one seam edge on the armhole sticking a little out. So I made a dress similar to this a while back and well, my body measurements are 32-24-36. When I made my top... well, it didn't fit with the bottom. Should I just do that triangle thing instead of going straight down and use a zipper because of the size differences between my waist and the rest of my body?

+LeDubKitty Yes! Go in a triangle sort of way, down to the bottom of the top (where your waist will be), until it matches up with your skirt! And if your fabric is not stretchy, you should always be using a zipper anyway :)

When i took a home ec class in junior high, the teacher gave us a packet of paper with all sorts of lines to sew with real thread. draw sharp corners or curvy lines or straight lines and just practice following the lines. it's really fun to sew paper tbh, and i have used it to "test" out my sewing machine straight out of storage each time I get it out.

It's meant to be too big, and then to be taken in to fit. This tutorial is made for total beginners who find it difficult to sew small seam allowances, and is made to ensure they don't end up making something too small. That much seam allowance is included because both a lining AND the sewing together of the front and back is included in that seam allowance. See 7:35 !

What should you do if the back pieces overlap when you put it on?

+Valerie Moshier either 1: sew the side seams in more or 2: if that gives you pancake boob, you might have to cut the back pieces smaller. Now, you would have already lined them, but that's okay - insert the zipper like I do in my Half-circle skirt tutorial (slightly different method) and it will work out fine! It doesn't matter if the layers are open on this seam :) (only matters for the neckline and arm holes!)

Thanks for this tutorial! I had barely done any sewing before and needed to make a dress for a cosplay I was doing. I tried some of the basics out on some cheap calico first and then bought my material and bit the bullet and went for it. I was intimidated at first - and I admit that I watched this a few times thinking, 'BUT WHERE DO I START?!!!'. Once I got started though, it was much easier than I had anticipated!

I’ve never actually made a skater dress, despite what a good first dress project it is. And funny enough, at LEAST 70% of my original inspiration to get into seeing years ago was your channel. So when I promised a friend a skater dress, I immediately thought to look and see if you had a tutorial and what do you know, even your very first video is helping me out all these years after you originally got me into seeing in the first place. Kinda feels like some crazy full circle (skirt!!) moment 😄❤️✨✨✨

Oh you make it look so easy! I got a sewing machine for Christmas 2015, and I still haven't used it. Shame on me! I got so intimidated by it because I don't know anything about sewing. What kind of thread to get, what fabrics to use, and what all the different settings and stitches on the sewing machine are for. I realize I just have to start somewhere and I'll learn as I go, but so far the sewing machine has been sitting in the cupboard waiting to be used. I've watched a few of your videos now, and i'm inspired to give it a shot! As soon as I finish my bachelor thesis, I'll go buy what I need to make a circle skirt and start with that :) And I really love dresses like this, so maybe I can make one for myself by the end of the summer. That would be such an accomplisment for me. Thank you for the inspiration!

I think it’s safe for me to say that this is one of the most precise, helpful and follow-along-friendly tutorial I have ever come across. I had soo many questions during the process of making (a slightly different version of) this, and almost all of these questions could be answered by rewatching parts of this video :D I am just going to write down some of the problems I encountered, maybe they will help others new to diy-ing (like some of your comments helped me :)): - If you use stretchy fabric and don’t plan on adding a zipper or buttons etc.: Use either a stretchy thread to sew around the waistband (when adding skirt and top part) or sew with a zig-zag stitch (it stretches a _bit_ )... my top and skirt fit perfectly, until I put it all together and could no longer get it over my shoulders...^^ (solution of course: I had to add a zipper after all) - If you have to make larger darts at the „bottom“ of the top half of the dress (due to bigger bra size), keep in mind that your pattern becomes skewed! Meaning: The first time I cut my pattern out, I didn´t account for this and drew rather precise under-the-shoulder lines. After adding darts, the fabric part that was supposed to be right under my upper arm had moved about 5 cm downwards. So, if you need to add big darts, I suggest not making your armhole that large and rather cutting away at it later. - as some already suggested, if you have a bigger bra size, you’ll might have to add side darts as well (yes, possibly multiple :,)) I wish all of you who want to follow this tutorial good luck! :) This was the first piece of clothing I ever made, and it turned out better than I would have ever dreamed (I can wear it outside...), mostly because of this great video guide... and because it is perfectly fitted to my body, it is the most comfortable thing! So, trying this is really worth it :)
