When you mentioned saving time and aggro with the joints all I could think of was "if it's worth doing, it is worth over doing"! 🤣 Nice job mate!

Great tutorial. You pointed out many things for me to consider in an attempt to build something needed for myself, or should I say my neighbors! Nice practical design

I think that is a fabulous enclosure. I can appreciate you know the defects of your project and prefer that it was perfect, but I think it looks great, and clearly it controls the sounded and the dust. I've been thinking about something like this but not taken action for 3 years. Great job!

Thanks Grant, I put it off too for a good few months. So glad i finally got round to doing it though. Made using the CNC a much more enjoyable experience

Wow! What a difference. Mine will have actual sound proofing material, so hopefully even quieter. I hope it does not trap too much heat. I want it to lock up in a box no one can see in.

Awesome enclosure, I just finished mine a few weeks back as well and its not perfect but I am no longer treading aluminium shavings into the house which is really nice and being able to think in the shop area while its running is a bonus as well!

Couldn't agree more. Still trying to hoover up all the aluminum shavings from carpet. Always seem to reappear

Great build, I'm impressed at polycarbonate blocking sound with no sign of sound deadening foam, I thought it would reverberate, much better success than mine with 10mm closed cell foam adhesive on wood panels.

Yes i was actually surprised how well it worked. Honestly i think its more to do with it being air tight than the thickness of the panels. I get the same noise reduction effect after adding weather seal and draught seal around my doors in my house. It cuts down noise so much.

Good idea,think I should concentrate on the seams & seals. Thanks for the idea. Take Care & Stay Safe

Thanks for all the useful conclusions at the end! One thought about your dust collection: do you have any air inlet into the enclosure? If it's too tight, you might get too little flow, which reduces the dust pickup. "Hooked on wood" has a great video about this. Keep inventing and stay safe!

oh its nowhere near airtight haha, but good tip, thanks!

Thank you. One of the first things I'd done for my 3040T after breaking a 6mm end mill. If that hit me in the face it would of hurt, if I'd had not been wearing safety specs would of been much worse. I used 8mm polycarbonate on the doors and made out of wood too with removable side panels and the front door hinges down. It has made it much quieter but a upgrade of the table did help a bit too. Like the 3040 you got by the way with the linear rails/profile, thinking of either modifying mine now or try building one :-) . I have no garden as such so had to do the word working in the bathroom of my flat :-)

A dryer fan is quiet compared to most vacuum cleaners. I recomend getting one off an old dryer and making your own vacuum cleaner. Then a jacket around a rubber vacuum hose to absorb more sound. All it takes is one neighbor complaining and your business gets shut down.

Really great tutorial and awesome enclosure! I'm just about to begin setting up an X4-800L that we've just bought at my work. I'd love to know the internal dimensions of this enclosure and how you're finding it so far? Great idea with the opening windows for bringing material in, I'd not considered that. Also in love with all the magnetic attachments. Great work!

How about internal soundproofing within the box, thinking a Super Dense Sound Absorbing Foam for my own build. Great job btw.

Hi, as i showed in the video, the enclosure in its current format does a really good job at cutting sound. I see no need for additional sound proofing material and I would rather be able to see in thee enclosure from all angles

Nice design, have you measured how much dB when you closed the door and CNC+vacuum running ? Thanks:)
@ThisDesignedThat
@ThisDesignedThat Жыл бұрын
I did record the dB drop in the video of the spindle on and off i believe. I have my vacuum and air compressor outside of the enclosure in the room so its still noisy when all these things are running. If it werent making youtube videos with the CNC i would have built the enclosure from 18mm ply on all sides and lined with foam or carpet to really cut down the noise, you can certainly make the enclosure more soundproof than what I made here but I needed to have visibility of the machine

isn't the acrylic preventing it from being sound proof? acrylic or lexan doesn't really absorb much noise... or how do you get away with that?
@ThisDesignedThat
@ThisDesignedThat 3 жыл бұрын
From my experience, it being airtight is what cuts down the noise. You can hear the difference in the video when i close lock the doors.

It doesn’t take a lot of woodworking tools to build that kind of enclosure. All you need is a circular saw and a drill. Those are the two essential power tools. A skilled carpenter can build nearly anything out of those. And yes. All those fancy wood joints are totally unnecessary, when what you should do is use screws. Plywood gussets or panels would help keep it square and rigid.
