I did this yesterday but struggled to come up with enough nitrogen "Greens" so i ran to the supermarket and they gave me a ton of scrap Swiss chard and bokchoy. I had so much I chopped up the extra and ziplocked in the freezer for an upcoming 2nd bin.

TIA! I told my wife we could just use a $13 plastic bin. She wants an $80 custom made "compost bin". Yours was ready in 5 mins!! 😎 She told me I was crazy and it would look tacky in the yard, I said it's just compost, not a bird bath.
@TahtahmesDiary
@TahtahmesDiary Жыл бұрын
Bird baths aren’t pretty for the birds, a plastic bowl or box would work for them too. We don’t make things pretty for the animals, we make them nice for ourselves so they are pleasant when we look at them as we use them daily. This is the purpose of making things in and outside of our home aesthetically pleasing while still being functional. By your logic we should never make fine dining China, have gnomes or statues in the backyard, or use LED lights that change fun colors. So you’re right a plastic box will work, but your wife is right that it looks tacky and takes some pleasure out of the experience of working around your home because it is in fact uglier than she had envisioned.

@@TahtahmesDiary yeah well it's a damn compost bin, bird baths are actual decorations, garden statues and gnomes are decorations, and nice plateware is to enhance the eating experience because eating is presentation. compost is much different. zero reason to get an 80 dollar compost bin when you can buy a 13 dollar plastic one.

I think ideally you have two bins. One that is full and just needs more time to decompose and another for adding new scraps until it gets full. When you empty the done one then that becomes the new scrap bin. Make sense? Is that what you were asking?

@KAITLYNTAYLOROFFICIAL
@KAITLYNTAYLOROFFICIAL 4 жыл бұрын
Hi alondra! Great question. You don’t need to really because food scraps are typically moist. So don’t feel the need to unless your compost is looking dry. It can also depend on where you live. I live in Florida where it’s very humid so it naturally stays moist. But you want your compost to be about the consistency of a moist sponge! It should feel nice and moist. Not wet, and definitely not dry. 🤗❤️ I hope that helps

Yayy that’s awesome! Go for it! You can always tie a string or small rope around the bin to keep it secure 😁🥰 thanks for leaving a comment!

Once you start this can you keep adding scraps without redoing the layers each time? Thanks for this simple DIY!
@KAITLYNTAYLOROFFICIAL
@KAITLYNTAYLOROFFICIAL 4 жыл бұрын
Yes!! You can! When you add things you can flip or roll the container around a bit too to get everything mixing inside. You want to try and keep the food scraps from being on the top of the pile- to keep bugs/smell away and keep it in the middle where the heat develops to start decomposing fastest! I like to use my foot and roll it around the yard a few times- this will help everything decompose faster. If you start to see your food waste needs more natural ingredients to cover it- you can add some leaves, twigs, or dirt! :) you’re welcome and I’m so glad you liked my video! 💗

Very good. So then what do we do next ? Do we turn it ? Can we add more food scraps ? How long does it take until we can use it ?

Does the compost bin need to be transparent, or can it be any color? I have a black one. Also, how long does it take for the compost to be ready?

Thank you Stan! You can find in the description. It's the first link. If it's out of stock you can click on my garden favorites which is the second link and find a similar bin. Hope you enjoy!!

That is a lot of plastic bags used. Why not re-use shopping bags, cereal bags to reduce the waste?

Do you keep layering it? Like when you go dump more food in the bin, do you have to add more soil grass, cardboard newspaper ? How often do you stir? How long before it’s ready? Ty

Lovely idea, but you’d need quite a lot of boxes this size to make enough compost for the garden. The air and water is for the microbes - that turns all your waste to compost - so the don’t die.
