I made a similar project a few years ago... A couple tricks I've learned in my process back then. Build the base structure from moisture resistant chipboard. That helps with the swelling and avoids too much cracking. Cover the whole structure with PVA and hessian on top. Hessian is dirt cheap and gives the concrete a nice structure to grab on. I've used normal Portland cement. 3 parts cement, 1 part sand, 1 part PVA. Then added water until I had a thick yoghurt like consistency. Before applying the concrete I made the meanwhile well dried and glued hessian wet again and applied about 5-8mm concrete. The water in the hessian keeps the concrete from drying out too quickly and cracking. Then I covered the whole project under a sheet of plastic for two days. With a metal blade, I've flattened the surface and allowed another day for drying completely. When dry, I've rollered some acrylic mat clear coat on and voila concrete coating is done. Works for wall panels as well.

Great stuff! I know the cracks you got are mostly structural, but more often than not cracks are do to concrete drying to quickly. To fix this you can cover the concrete with a tarp and spray it with water now and again.

Concrete loves water, i wouldnt worrry too much about the rain. Spraying water every now and again would help with the cracks as well. 👍👍

Hey you should totally consider using a concrete feather coat over a nice plywood base, also using a real sealer would always be better than water soluble white PVA glue.

It turned out so so great! I love how it matches with the couch, it gives me some industrial-classy kind of vibes and I honestly love it 😍 But I wonder if it wouldn't be easier if you made the wooden box, then added spackling all over it, sanded and painted it with burnt cement paint 🤔 not sure if the results would be the same tho

I think it would have been better with 2*4 to frame the cement board instead of the MDF being glued. And the reason why the sealant is gloss is because u poured way too much at once. Still looked nice in the end.

Alright, maybe a a dumb question, but is there any problem with wood getting wet from the concrete? In terms of swelling/molding/rotting? If I were to recreate a nightstand-sized table with a scrap wooden crate using your technique at the end, would there be any issue for the wood to get wet by means of the concrete? What ya'll think?
@shaeferweleschuk1324
@shaeferweleschuk1324 3 жыл бұрын
All the moisture from the concrete will evaporate, thats how the concrete dries 👍 so the wood may swell a little initially but it wont rot or mold
