Great job Vicky you put a great deal of time and effort into it, well done. I did something similar in my conservatory. I bought a sun shade 3.5m x 2.5 m that has 4 eyelets, one on each corner. Fixed 4 anchor points 1 in each corner of the conservatory wall about 50mm from the roof. Then I connected spring connector to each eyelet. Then hooked them on, one at a time to the anchor points. Finished product a shade covering the full inside roof of my conservatory. For the windows in my conservatory I fitted a Swish rail all the way round, then fitted off the peg sets of in an off white curtains to match the colour of the inner frame work. Total cost under £300.00, saving over a thousand or more pounds.

Thanks for this video. After watching it, I realised it was too fiddly to try to make sail type blinds and started looking for an alternative. My current fav is roller blinds. Im still deciding exactly what to go with, but the argos range is super cheap. Attach the header to the house side, let out all the play with the chain, then drill a hole through the bottom of the drop and attach it above the garden side window. Tighten up the tension with the chain. Added bonus: once the worst of the summer is over you can let out some slack, unhook it and wind it back in to the cassette

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK I realise it will not look as nice as sails, so I guess you have to be the kind of person that wants to do something as cheap as possible and dont care. --> me :P I even had a look at ebay and you can get realy cheap used roller blinds on there

Hey! Your videos are very useful and informative. For the past year we are renovating our house and i find you have lots of useful videos that i come back to all the time so thank you. After wathing this video i considered doing the same thing but after doing some research decided against it. I wonder if you still stuck with the curtains for it? We decided to insulate and clad it with upvc panels. I really recommend it as for 2mx4m conservatory diy cost us just over £300 and it was quite easy so for diy queen like yourself it will be a childs play 😊 Anyway many thanks and i just want to say you are an inspiration for all women afraid of diy and you are worth admiring! Well done 😊

Hi Vicky,we were in the same situation and needed some roof blinds, but had horrific quotes.We used silver foil bubble wrap and it worked well.I really like your fixing system and i'm thinking of making blinds for another conservatory with fabric backed with silver foil type thermal blankets.Did your solution reduce the temperature much? You don't say on the video.Did anyone work out a pulley or roller blind solution?Good video with lots of good ideas

Hi Kim, it drastically reduced the heat. Possiby by about 50%. I wish I'd measured it at the time. I've since taken them down as the fittings protruded for when I installed vertical blinds, but I soon noticed a huge difference again. I then tried painting with solar paint on the inside which hasn't worked and I don't know if the paint was a con as the one we were sent was washable: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXuWnYCAbKqkras If you find out about another idea, then please let me know! I've heard about a silicone that you can paint on the outside, but think the quote I got was 500 or 1k, (apparently that stuff works).

Great tutorial. What did your fiancé use to drill into the frame. I have only drilled into wood so any advice re attaching the wardrobe holders into uPVC would be great, thanks!
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynne, At the time of filming, I'd never used a drill in my life before (only nails and wood taught by my Dad). However, if I were doing this again, I would personally recommend using some self tapping screws and fix in to place with an electric screwdriver (or you could try a non-electric one first but it might be a struggle). You shouldn't need to drill holes first. I've used them on various different projects, including metal and they come in various lengths. And if you're ever unsure regarding lengths etc, I find the staff in Toolstation are ALWAYS helpful. Let me know if you need any more help: www.screwfix.com/c/screws-nails-fixings/self-tapping-drilling-screws/cat840058 or www.toolstation.com/shop/Screws+%26+Fixings/d90/Self+Tapping+Screws/sd750

I wish I'd used a thermometer to gauge but it felt it reduced the heat by maybe around 30%. It could have been half, but we soon noticed a difference the day we had to take them down as the poles got in the way of the window blind fittings. I may just adjust to put them back up.

So how do the finished, ceiling roller blinds roll up and down? . . or are they just permanently covering the ceiling?
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 жыл бұрын
They were just permanently there (I've since taken them down to try solar paint instead). I was wanting to make a roller blind initially but couldn't find a way sadly..
@kathiechis7997
@kathiechis7997 6 жыл бұрын
It is a shame you took them down. When I have finished my experiment of making my roller blinds, ( and it works out ok ) I shall explain how I did it . . so dont get rid of them yet. I was quoted over £2000 to have them made but am sure I can make them for under £200 . . so watch this space ;)
