As someone who builds cabinets, I would suggest putting a second shelf inside the console running the length of it, maybe just tall enough to put a coffee table book or a basket for mail, keys etc. You’ll also have to put a block about halfway in the length to create two equal sides. You can add a back brace the same dimensions as your shelf takes up on the back if you need extra support and to keep anything from falling out the back of the shelf. Buy a kreg jig and you shouldn’t need any of those brackets. I know it’s not the exact vision, but short of starting over with thicker board, I think that’s your best option. Pine is a soft wood and for the thickness you currently have, it’s going to allow a lot of reverb.

For the table make sure to wood glue where the wood connects, it'll be a stronger bond than the braces and won't shift as much. Also because the legs are so far apart, you need another piece of wood across the back lower down to brace the two legs so a dowel connecting the two legs will give you much more stability. If you don't like the look of it you can have it at the back side of the piece and then paint just that part the same colour as the wall.

Your videos are my favorite. As an all around crafty person I love your “just do it” attitude! Your personality & approach to design are so different than the influencer stuff that seems to be all. over. the. internet. You’re down to earth, budget/environmentally conscious, and stylish! Keep creating!! Can’t wait for the next video x

first! pocket screws would stabilize and not be visible. The wood might be treated causing it to not take the stain? Love how the house is looking!

Some pre-stain conditioner will help pine take the stain better. Pocket holes would help, but mitre joints with glue will make the waterfall look great! Maybe your neighbors have some tools you can use...

When painting or staining, if the object is too cold it won’t take the color the way that it should. Basically, your wood pores are too closed up due to the cold temp outside. Lightly sand it and bring it inside to warm up. Stain inside in a ventilated space (maybe just a room you can close off and open the windows in).

OH. My gosh. This is my answer! I can’t thank you enough bc I really didn’t want to buy yet another stain product! Thank you thank you!

Also never let paint or stain products freeze. Completely ruins them. I’m also from the Cincy area, so I’ve had to deal with projects in all types of weather. Good luck!

Hello! Nice video! Try using the Kreg jig with pocket holes! It allows you to join your wood and it’s very strong!

I'm planning to make a console table super similar out of 2x4s! I'm going to add a shelf on the lower part as well. I made a laundry shelf just like this and BOY is it unstable. 🤣 I love seeing your raw and real process.

Pocket screws with a little wood glue are the best way to get that seamless no screw look you are looking for. Hopefully this helps!

Great choice on the paint colour! We painted our bedroom a navy blue and love it. We had 8 large swatches on the wall for a few days before making a decision.

Even just gluing the seams of the console table would make it a lot more stable

If you wanna keep the minimal waterfall look maybe fasten it to the wall. lt will be like a floating shelf with legs.

Add a long straight 2x3/2x4 (with the '4' side vertical, if that makes sense!) to the underside of the top of the console table, screwed and then dowel filled into the sides - and then glue the waterfall joints. Wondering if that might help with stability?

I love how it’s looking! Maybe, for the table, you should consider a thicker wood? Idk lol and pocket holes!! Definitely pocket holes

The blue ended up looking great. It gives the room a serene feeling. My home is sporting the exact same terrible boob lights. Can't decide what to replace them with, or else they'd be long gone by now.

what exactly did you use to try staining the console table?

A T-Bar (basically a two by two or two by four piece between the two sides at the bottom or a few inches from the bottom, in the middle) and a decorative molding piece at the top front between the two sides to hide the brackets would help?
@laufffs3 жыл бұрын
Maybe just adding another piece of wood to the underside, that way the legs have more to screw on to and hopefully give it a bit more stability. Also for the stain wood conditioner before staining should help

That’s too funny that you had so much trouble picking the paint color for the room because I just watched your wedding video and it looks like it’s the same color as your husband’s tie?
