Thanks for making this video. I have a similar situation that I am evaluating. You don't talk much about what you needed to do to place the cover plates on the door frame. From what I see at 2:50 it is obvious that these plates are MUCH wider apart than the holes in the one plate that would have been there from the original mortise lock. Anyone contemplating this DIY project will need to find additional advice on how to install those plates properly.

I may just be being picky but I really dislike the latches not being inset. Seems easy enough to dremel the cover plate you made to set the latches properly.

No you're right. It bothers me as well. A fully flush finish would have been a nicer look.

Great demo! Are the 2 lock holes that you drilled into metal mortise filler plate 6 inches apart on center?

They certainly are.

Jesus man you just turned a $1000 lock into a $70 piece of garbage Hope you didn't throw that mortise away, you'll want to put it back on in a year when that breaks

Never realized this DIY would be so controversial. The mortise I stripped out is worth $100. A tad bit shy of $1000. I tossed it in the trash. Very happy with the result. In-laws, friends and nanny all have their own access code to get into our condo now. Going to a smart lock was a no-brainer.
