Good job mate! This will come in handy as I just started a project car- the more I watched the show I suddenly had a brain switch, the flames suddenly flipped and the flames reversed into swimming sperm- look for yourselves! Problem is I now have to keep flipping my brain as it wanders to the “other side” now haha!

Sam, Thanks so much for your informative video! I'll be looking forward to learning more from you! You have an easy way about you, and bring condensed information at the same time... a great combination. I have a question ... The vinyl I have found has a "fabric" backer, which I think will limit ti's ability to stretch in the way that is needed for this application..Does the vinyl you use have no backer, or maybe a "non-woven" backer??? Any info would be very helpful, and thanks again for your super informative videos...!
@SamsProjectBench
@SamsProjectBench 3 жыл бұрын
Hi bill thank you for watching the video I’m very happy you found value in it. The vinyl I use has a thin knitted backing I have used some vinyl with a thicker fabric backing it can be a bit more restrictive and seams to soften edges so may require some experimentation to see how it will respond. The thicker backing is a good option when the surface your working on is not perfect as the fabric backing is good for hiding minor imperfections hope this helps👍

Hey great video! Have a question or should I say an issue. I am using Allsport 4 way stretch vinyl for a console I built for my car. I am using the Dap Weldwood Contact Adhesive Landau Normal I am using a brush to apply it. I put 1 coat on the vinyl and on my console. I wait about 20 minutes and then I start putting the vinyl on my console. Everything goes well no issues. I wait about a week and then I pull my car out into a sunny hot day and then the vinyl just starts to come off! Only where the sun hits it and gets hot. What did I do wrong?
@SamsProjectBench
@SamsProjectBench 2 жыл бұрын
Some contact adhesives are not rated to handle heat or direct sunlight this is an issue I haven’t faced for a while, my suppliers have not sold standard contact adhesive for years because similar issues and I only use the heat resistant contact glue. I’m not familiar with the brand of contact adhesive you’re using. This may be part of the issue but I would also recommend putting a second coat of glue on both surfaces the first coat is usually pretty good at soaking into the materials it’s applied to but ideally needs a second coat for maximum strength. I like to think of the first coat as a primer coat and the second coat allows both surfaces to bond to each other. I hope this helps 👍

@SamsProjectBench

A Upholstery open cell roll foam is usually your best bet it can come in various sizes 6mm is typically my favourite as is pretty versatile. There isn’t many foams that will be eaten by glue. polystyrene foam if the most vulnerable to glue but you still can get specialty glue for this but if your in doubt just do a small test piece 👍 Hope this helps

@SamsProjectBench

This can be done with leather it’s probably a little easier with vinyl. With leather you just need to be aware of scars and defects on the back as that will show through when glueing to a hard surface. This can be mitigated by adding a thin layer of foam to the base board Hope this helps

I did a custom embossed book cover sort of like this a few years back. I used layered cardboard, vinyl and a roller press. It came out really well. Less scary than the van doors I am now doing because it used less materials, however I really didn't want to stuff it up because the stencil was detailed and took me ages to cut.
