Filing of the bridge near the magnetic pickups, gluing the nut with superglue, drilling the holes with a drill, mounting the pots with a wrench. I’m not nagging, but on such an expensive paint job with such expensive parts, I would do it with more appropriate tools, to apprehend damaging.

I put Roswell LGA90 (again 60EUR) in it and a new switch (the original one fell apart). I also moved the strap pin to the backside of upper horn for better accesibility of the upper frets. @ThomannsGuitarsBasses3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Kai! Don't worry about the glue, I always use so little of it that it's really not an issue removing the nut later on. @Dice11383 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend gluing the bottom of the nut as demonstrated. Glue instead on the face of the nut facing the bridge. Doing this makes it easier to remove in the future (if need be) and reduces the risk of material tear out.

@ThomannsGuitarsBasses3 жыл бұрын
Hey, changing the nut after a plek job isn't ideal, you're right. The plek adjusts the nut too, so it would've been better swapping it before that. We didn't have the time to do that because of shooting this video and the super tight schedule of the Thomann luthiers. They had to do "their part" before I modified the guitar. It's not too bad though, a tech with some experience can "copy" the plek-adjusted original nut which gives you a perfectly set up guitar at the end. Cheers! //Kris

Hey Lee, swapping the pots (or even just the pickups) on semi-hollow guitars is not easy. You have to pull everything out through the F hole and put the new parts in the same way. There are tricks that help immensely but it's still a lot of fiddling involved. About the parts: any humbucker will fit the HB-35Plus, if you want to only swap the knobs, go for metric ones (so nothing from Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, and all other USA brands). And the pickguard: you will not find a fitting replacement for that guitar. You have to buy a blank pickguard and saw / file it to fit yourself. Cheers //Kris

With that said, I have ONE guitar that I use to test new things on to determine as to weather I like some new thing or not. Outwith that, I'd say it's really just a dumb waste of money. There are folks that enjoy tinkering and that's cool too. If you enjoy modding or want to learn, that's cool. Not too keen on this video. Worse, is that the Harly Benton is still an HB, and will have a similar resale value to an original HB.
@ThomannsGuitarsBasses3 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right about the resale value. Still, I like to think of my guitars as guitars and not as investments. Every guitar looses quite a lot of its new price, even custom shops. The only really good investments are very expensive, very limited special run custom shops. So why worry about that too much. I like to think of this project this way: without the expensive pro paint job and the Plek service this would've cost pretty much under 1000€ and the guitar feels and plays very close to a custom shop. That's pretty impressive and absolutely possible. But of course only, if the basics of the guitar (resonances, sustain, neck) are great to begin with. Cheers //Kris

does a bolt on construction on such a SG actually prevent it from being bent out of tune easily ? everyone who has played a SG probably knows that problem, and I assume its one bc of how little wood is on both sides of the joint and bc the neck is glued in instead of bolted on...
@kazzTrismus3 жыл бұрын
i think its because the metal screws added into the wood creates an area thats way less flexible (cuz steel), but with a neck through theres no steel sandwich causing an area more rigid than wood alone could reach. especially with the plate behind the neck heel area (for models that have one) i worked in wood railings, adding just a thin bit of steel with a couple of screws made an extremely obvious strong difference in rigidity, even just small plates in key areas
@maxmustardman2983 жыл бұрын
@@kazzTrismus that makes sense. Ive always wondered about the ibanez rg joints with their thin flat necks and just a couple of screws bolted directly into the wood w/o a support plate, given the heel is also shaved down on top of that. Never mind, its actully not that thin.

Hope it doesn`t stay in tune otherwise it would be not as good as an original Gibson.

Die SG klingt nach dem Umbau immer noch nach China

Ok. Interesting video. But this is related to the #diykitchallenge??? So, the challenge is not to get a kit guitar from HB/Thomann and see what you can do with it... ...the challenge is to spend a ton of cash getting a plek job, and loads of high end electronics, new nut, paint job by a 3rd party etc. Well, I find that shitty. I was looking forward to the #diykitchallenge but now I'm thinking it's a joke. Because frankly, if you were really trying to turn a HB kit guitar into something awesome, with no budget...You would replace every single part of the thing.

Hey Marc, thanks for the comment! I'm not participating in the challenge, we simply wanted to overdo everything on this kit to show you guys what is possible. Don't take it too serious, this is not a "this is what we want you to do" video, it's more like an experiment. We actually hope for the opposite: we'd love to see self finished / painted kits, unique designs all made by hand, etc. Try to see this as an inspirational video to tweak guitar kits and not as a description of what you should do. I hope that clarifies our message. Cheers //Kris

Speeded-up video is not helpful.... just skip those steps and tell what they were. Watching FAST video does not show a viewer how to do things.

Another time-wasting video. This is totally useless if you have not a before and after comperation ....

anyway who's "harley benton"?? its like these chinese imports come up with some "name" and make a brand of shiny shitty cheap priced guitars for a couple of years duping customers, then soon enough 'Harley benton" will disappear and new name/brand will come along, but its the same shitty quality guitar..wise up !

This is like fitting a 12 cylinders Ferrari engine on a moped. Nice style exercice, but the kit doesn't worth it.
