I'm going to show you what you need to do to replace the radius arm bushes on an old land rover defender. how you do this yourself is up to you because your skills, tools space are all totally different from what i have.

I wouldn't recommend copper grease ,metal to metal only,. Rubber lube is better , Retired old hgv fitter

About 150 over here but i did get them on special offer. it's worth it though they do 50000 miles this is only my second set in 12yrs. I do a fair bit of woodland work in winter so don't want to get stuck either.

Did you work out the hours it took .. very aprox. ? Anyway, well done. was that a cold chisel shank you used as a drift rod for the bush insert knock outs.. a heck of a lot cheaper than a press but the bare hand below a whacking hammer scares the shit out of me. Poly vs rubber ? do poly last as long? sorry for all the ?'s but my disco arms need new bushes soon.

Sorry for the essay but you asked.😀 Hope it helps The original bushes were in the landy when I bought it 12 years ago. With fairly diverse use, bit of motorway, 5ish years of playing on an of road site and laneing, now she gets used for moving felled trees around on the roof and towing up to a tonish of timber at a time. Most the bushes were fine but had a couple of mot advisories so started the process of working through all of them. In terms of hours, its a land rover so how quick can you undo the bolts is the biggest time factor. if you dont paint your radius/trailing arms and you know what your doing then 2 hours each the way I did it, if you have impact guns and a press an hour. The metal I was hitting was a bit of mild steel (I think) 20mm bar with a lip ground/lathed on the not hitting end to stop it sliding around. In terms of my hand covering i've done a fair amount of smithing it the past so rarely hit my hand anymore and can walk it of in 10mins if i do. I heard mixed reviews for both poly and rubber, poly seems easier to refit and it last at least 12yrs so i went with that. Dont forget that you tracking/alignment will be off after you put them back on and I did take to a garage to have that done.

@@InfinityMindDIY Tracking/alignment wont change, the big nut on the end of the radius arm onto the chassis mount should be tightened until it reaches the shoulder and runs out of thread, this is so alignment is always the same. Genuine rubber bushes are far superior to poly bushes, there just harder to get in and out, thats why most people go for the poly bush.

What type of paint is used for painting the radius arms?

I used a Rustins metal primer from Tool Station. (Don't use it, it's an awful paint. It doesn't flow, I had to add extra thinners just to make it workable.) Then I used exterior gloss from B & Q. It's cheap, as paint goes, and it is easy to touch up when I scrape against things like trees.

Last time I did this on my P38 (on air) I had jacks and blocks of wood everywhere to get it realigned. Nice job, nice vid, couldn't show mine, too much swearing.
