Highly recommend lightly sanding the table top and adding a couple layers of Polyurethane. I used this one: amzn.to/2ovTB4T and now it looks amazing and is easier to keep clean.

Curious why people use the Karlby instead of something that is a fully solid wood? For $10 extra you can get the HAMMARP from Ikea in solid oak (or just hit up your local lumber/timber yards). Finish it however you want. Is it just the extra work to get the color/finish?

(I am a graphic designer and web developer) However recently it has gotten old so I've been looking at videos like this and I have to say. Im in the middle of changing my entire layout. Thought my setup will have to have a little more work as I have so many things necessary (Large scale printer, scanner, mic, etc.) I can't wait for the final outcome. Thanks for the idea with the retractable USB!

Really nice work. Now going through your items i notice that, that arm you're using for the monitor technically don't support a 34 inch monitor, even though the specs are alright with the brackets and weight. So my question is, can I in theory just use any arm for a screen this size, if the specs check out, even though the manufacturer doesn't state it's made that screen size?

No. What you’re most concerned about is the moment that is produced, not the weight of the screen. A larger screen with the same weight as a smaller screen will produce a larger moment. So to sum things up, it depends, and you’ll have to do the math.

I like your minimalist approach but as a pragmatist I have to ask ... where are your storage modules for paper, filing, writing tools (I know you use pencils), etc. Or do you have another solution for those? I can visualize a person going partially paperless but our society is not completely optimized for going completely paperless yet.
@aashilr7 жыл бұрын
Sonia Menezes Well, there's always Google Drive & all it's functionality. Although when needing paper, he could keep that stored away from his desk.
@HelloDavid7 жыл бұрын
I have a closet stuffed with all those items. But I'll probably want to build a separate storage unit in the future. While not the most practical in design. I enjoy keeping all my "clutter" separate from my working space, and just get it when I need it.

yeah he's totally rolling in the dough from that ikea / logitech partnership he has... Just because he didn't cut the tree down himself and build the desk doesn't mean he didn't set this up custom / aka DIY. A DIY computer means you buy the parts and assemble it; not soldier it together.
@complainergamer7 жыл бұрын
He may not be making ( or rolling in your terms) the money from Ikea and or Logitech, but YT sure is helping. :) My 2 cents. You're going a little overboard mentioning a tree being cut down, calm down chipper. We are talking about a desk Adam, not a computer. See the heading? How it says," DIY Dream Desk Setup - Clean Modern Wood Design". Yah, its a desk. lol. Anyway, it's a nice clean setup with no real pertinent info.
@KotoBish2 жыл бұрын
David you're right about Ikea quality reflecting price. That wallnut veneer looks rough and possibly too thin to be sanded without causing damage. I made my desk from a solid wood kitchen counter top. I chose Iroko which is layed out in the same manner as your Walnut. What's more, the company that sells it will cut to your size, finish the edges, corners, and even recess in a wireless phone charger. I kept my corners square but had bullnose profile applied to all 4 sides . I can charge my phone whilst it just lays on the desk, no wires, no stands, and not even a symbol to locate it. Big step in maintaining a minimalist and clean set up. I cut holes andfitted cable ports, and all devices are plugged into an 8-gang extension cable, mounted to the underside of the desk, cable clips keep everything neat and tiday. I prefer this to the wire rack you used in your dual port video. The extension cable then is the only wire I have to hide, it is cable clipped so that it runs down the rear side of a leg, completely unseen, until it breaks horizontally and clipped to the top of a skirting board. It was recommended to oil the Iroko to maintain it, I figure I don't need to do this as frequently in desk use as they recommend for a kitchen, but even that was only every 6 months. In short, it's worth the extra money to get real wood.

Very Impressive! I have been looking and researching ideas for a Desk Setup that is in this same style. I have WAY more peripherals and items that need organizing and such, but minimizing way is VISIBLE is a must. I love the hybrid type setup you did with the counter top and the sit stand legs. I definitely will be stealing some of your ideas and techniques when I get around to doing a real setup. Also, great job MAKING the counter top works for you by sanding and coating it. I often modify items I purchase, whether is a phone or desk or monitor stand that is just missing something, to work FOR me. If I end up getting something like the Karlby counter top, tips on caring for it are a must. EXCELLENT VIDEO!
