Thanks for the look at using resin for making the ocean.. having seen the results, I can't say I'm a fan of it. I've always preferred the window putty method myself.. it makes for a more reliable bond with the glass, IMO. Not to mention that it's a lot easier to sculpt into realistic waves, than silicone is. Speaking of which, it's always puzzled me how almost nobody who makes SIB's ever creates halfway realistic looking waves, which is something I've always done my best to achieve. The thumbnail for this video is a good case in point.. to produce waves like that takes windspeeds of 50-60 knots or more.. so the yacht would be running under bare poles (or with a storm sail and jib at most), not with all sails set. Heck, the sails would be deeply reefed *long* before the waves got that bad. And where's the boat's wake? There's nothing in that tableau that conveys any sense of forward motion. For anyone wanting to make ships in bottles, I suggest spending some time studying photos and videos of what the ocean really looks like when sailing in various conditions before making your ocean. Just like in this thumbnail, far too many SIB'ers put Force 10 storm waves around a boat that looks like it's sailing in a gentle breeze on a mild sunny afternoon. I can only conclude they've never done any actual sailing themselves.

Will have to disagree with you. Im a USCG cert Captain with over 30 yrs on the ocean. The epoxy resin and silicone look great even after 30 years which is about the age of my oldest SIB. Pros and cons to each but I find it much easier to pour resin into the bottle to fill majority of the sea. Much easier then inserting small pcs of clay. Would love to see some of your work. In your example you've used a bottle that's standing upright. Do you have any tips for pouring resin effectively into a bottle that will be laying on its side- the more classic "Ship in a Bottle" orientation? Or would you recommend taking the long way around and building up the ocean from silicone alone?

Charlie Same technique but use a drinking straw with flexible end,..OR short hose.

At the end of the video, you have a bunch of other bottles shown. I have a question about a specific bottle, the squared one at the 5:45 mark. how did you shape the hanger in order to get the silicone on the end by the opening (the right side as it is shown in the video)? I am using a bottle of Larceny Bourbon which is shaped almost the same and I am having trouble getting the silicone applied on that end. Thanks!!

How long does it take for the silicone to dry inside the bottle? Its been 4 days since I put it inside the bottle and its still not dried. However, the leftover silicone/paint mix that was left on the plastic plate I used to mix, dried after just a day or so.

It really depends on brand of silicone. Most dry within a day. I once hooked up a fish tank air pump to blow air into the bottle. Which helped the silicone to dry

I just tried using this method. However when I mixed the parts 1:1 like the instructions, It created a huge bubble in the middle and the bottle got extremely hot to the touch. Any suggestions?

Well, when the resin cures, the chemical reaction creates gas and heat, so my advice would be to trying using a different ratio or making a smaller batch, and maybe try ventilating the bottle with an air hose. If you can't get it to work no matter what you do, you might consider a more traditional method like using clay or even just paint. I'm looking to experiment with some Play-Doh and foam for the sea and some land respectively, it's all paintable and can be spruced up to look good.
