Excellent video! Thx very much. However, I'm having trouble completing the final phase, i.e. adding the Iso alcohol (IA) to the gel (water, glycerin & xanthan gum mix) - the gel always fell apart even though I was adding the IA slowly while stirring... Could you pls confirm that to make a final product of 100 ml, how much time it would take to stir the IA into the the intermediate gel mixture? Once I know the time, I could then adjust the incremental amount of IA for each addition, etc. Thx.

I refer to the formula from WHO and add some food grade Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a gel agent, but I still get a liquid product form and it is uncomfortable when used on hand. There is a stickiness after several hours of use until I wash my hands. Is the xanthan gum that you use in this formula comfortable for hand? Is there any different results of product between this 'make at home' and 'hospital grade' (from another video)? *sorry for my bad english, i used Google translate to help me. you've got a standard answer, that did not answered your question; here is a more usefull explanation : you don't need 100% ethanol or Iso-propylalcohol 91 or 93 or 95 or 96% will do it too ( as long as it is 70+% ) She uses 100 % alcohol + 30% of the rest ( water + glycerine+ gelling agent ) you need to then adjust the formula from 100% to your %age of alcohol EG : you have X% alcohol and want to make 250 ml of 70% then do 250ml x 70% / X% = ml alcohol of X% needed for 250 ml total. [ I'm a chemist and make these days, gels & spray by the gallon every day . ]

I have 95% ethanol (190 proof Everclear) which I've successfully used with glycerin and alcohol free witch hazel to create a spray sanitizer that ends up having a 63.3% alcohol content (last I checked CDC recommended a formula that has either a minimum of 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol to be effective). I want to attempt adding xanthan gum to that formula to create a gel similar to commercial sanitizer. I ordered 2 oz of clear xanthan gum which doesn't look clear to me, but I digress. I know it's better to combine the x gum with the glycerin first but can I pulse the mix in a blender to create a gel consistency that is equivalent to the commercial sanitizer? Can anyone tell me if I have to use water or can I use alcohol free witch hazel in place of the water? And for example, for a 3 oz container using the 2:1 ratio with 2 oz of the 95% ethanol to the 1 oz of the glycerin and witch hazel solution (I want to test a small amount first so I don't end up wasting a large amount of ingredients obviously), how much xanthan gum would I use to get the desired consistency? I have no issue sticking with my liquid spray formula (I make small batches and give them away to people that have none, not trying to make product on a commercial scale to sell and profit off a health crisis like some folks are doing on Etsy), I'm just curious to see if I can actually make a gel product that is not sticky yet moisturizes like my liquid formula. I know nothing about chemistry but I enjoy experimenting. Can anyone help me? I don't have a scale I just measure my ingredients using ounces.

I personally use 200 proof grain alcohol in my formulas. I have never used witch hazel though. So not sure if xanthan gum would affect your mix, but I don't think it would. Unlike the wonderful video, my batches are 5-10 gallons at a time. So like you asked, I do blend the xanthan gum last in a blender. I also do not use water at all. However, I use raw aloe vera pulp, 2 aloe vera gels, glycerin, and hydrogen peroxide. I use 2 tsps of xanthan gum per gallon, and this comes from experimenting with various amounts... And EVERYONE loves it.!

You can use a two ingredient recipe of Aloe Vera gel and isopropyl alcohol. As its already a gel product there is no need to produce the Xanthan gum gel, and actually combining these two gels will likely give you a thicker product which is more difficult to distribute over your skin.

I've been having trouble with an alloe vera gel and 99.9% isopropyl sanitiser, the gel separates and turns into a white rubbery solid whatever I do! I was wondering if you could see any reason why 20% (Johnsons) Baby Lotion and 80% isopropinol would not be ok, it mixes easily (water based moisturiser?) and feels okay on hands. Obviously it is a liquid not a gel but in a spay bottle as a dispenser it's fairly practical. Thanks in advance...

If its really 99% you don't need to make real changes to the formula, at worst you'll end up with a 69% gel ( stil above 60% ) But you can re-shape your formula for lower alcohol content : you don't need 100% ethanol or Iso-propylalcohol 91 or 93 or 95 or 96% will do it too ( as long as it is 70+% ) She uses 100 % alcohol + 30% of the rest ( water + glycerine+ gelling agent ) you need to then adjust the formula from 100% to your %age of alcohol EG : you have X% alcohol and want to make 250 ml of 70% then do 250ml x 70% / X% = ml alcohol of X% needed for 250 ml total. I am curious, I have Isocol which reading ingredient label seems to be 64% and rest being water and fragrance - will this still be effective?
@drseagull50264 жыл бұрын
Substituting your 'isocol' for 100 % isopropyl alcohol will create a final product which is 38.4 % isopropyl alcohol (rather than the 60 % from using 100% isopropyl alcohol). So it will not be anywhere near as effective. WHO states the optimal alcohol concentration for hand sanitizers 60-95 %. If it is literally all you have then you could attempt to modify the formula. Using 93.75 % Isocol would give you a 60% isopropyl alcohol product. Leaving out the lavender oil (as you state the isocol has fragrance) that leaves you 3.25 % for water to add to the Glycerin and Xanthan Gum. I would still add the Isocol slowly as Belinda directed, but I cannot say with any certainty that this will create a gel product at the end, as you would be adding the majority of the water (for the gel) at the same time as adding the isopropyl alcohol. Good luck and best wishes to you.

Since alcohol evaporates quickly, would exposing it to air, then swirling it around accelerate the evaporation? Would the finished product still be 70%? I fear that everyone doing this at home will end up with a nice smelling bottle of 40% hand lotion and not having an effective product. What is the alcohol level for a mixture to still be flammable? Commercial hand sanitizers are still flammable out of the bottle. Not very scientific, but maybe a good litmus test for alcohol content.

@@InterstateAir1 I think her key words are "100%" alcohol. Unfortunately, at this time, I cant afford to experiment with my remaining alcohol. Lets say you allow 100% alcohol to evaporate to 50% volume, do you still have 100% ABV? If thats the case, you can stir all you want after adding a small number of other ingredients and still feel confident that your end-product is above the 60%-70% alcohol recommended levels. The concern is only when you start with 70% (most common rubbinig alcohol) and start "stepping on it" and allowing evaporation, you may end up with a solution that has much lower alcohol content (

You must have ha dyour formula wrong ( not enough alcohol ), you should end up around 70% alcohol; and at least above 60% . All alcohol ( liquid in water or as a gel ) will catch fire with a lighter if it is above 50% ( cold) . So check your alcohol concetration on the bottle and check the used formula .

Using Ethanol or Isopropyl is listed under Dangerous Goods. Highly Flamable. Flashpoint 17°C and 19°C. This needs to be on the Label. Cannot be transported by air. You have to have MSDS sheets and contents for Fire Dept when involved in an accident for them to know what to use to clean up spillage. Take precautions of your Provincial/ Municiple regulations concerning HazChem rules. Store in airconditioned facility.

You can increase the alcohol % by using a 3a molecular sieve. Google 3a molecular sieve to better understand what it is and how it works. in short , you can buy what looks like small pellets that will absorb the water and dehydrate the alcohol thus concentrating the alcohol. you can reuse the pellets again after drying them by heating them in an oven at about i think 160c -200c , or something like 400f-500f . i bought some from Deltaadsorbents.com , also watch this youtube video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYKUgYGOlsR_l6s

It depends on your solution container, e.g. if you want to make 1000 ml of sanitizing gel and the formula says 70% isopropyl alcohol/ethanol needed to make the solution, it means you need 700ml alcohol/ethanol to make 1000 ml of sanitizing gel. Cmiiw
