Just recently found your channel and I LOVE it!! It’s so great to see a garment come together from beginning to end and see the fit modeled at the end as well. The shorts turned out so cute and I love the tip about the extra top stitching on the elastic waist-band.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. That elastic waistband stitching takes pants to the next level :)

OK, so I literally just finished sewing up a pair of wide legged pants from a Japanese sewing book and basically just made the instructions up as i went along but if I'd only watched this video first, all my questions would've been answered. Pockets get me every time...knowing when to surge. sigh... Anyway, your shorts look so lovely. Another helpful video! Thanks so much!!

Ah! haha, well for next time! :) I sometimes skip pockets against my better judgement because I always anticipate them being a bother! Thanks for watching!!

I am finally getting to watch your video...I have been wanting to draft a shorts pattern and had been rummaging through all my patterns looking for one that I can hack into a decent and comfortable pair of shorts...My hand to Heaven I could not believe you came up with this shorts video. You did a great job on your pattern...I'm just going to draft mine like yours and see how I do...I love the way you do your pockets. I have never made that pocket side seam like that before but it's really genius the way it fits like it does...kudos girl...I have a bunch of left over linen from all the Byrdie blouses I've made , I always buy way more fabric that it takes to make my garment just for things like this....so I'm probably going to be in a shorts frenzy for a bit...lol...Thanks so much for this video. You are so talented and I am so glad I found you on You Tube. I always look forward to your next video.

Thank you so much, Cathleen! So glad you are finding the videos helpful. I love shorts like this--especially made out of linen. They are so great for summer (I'm lounging in a similar pair right now and wore this green pair yesterday!). Makes me feel more "put-together" for hanging at home :)

I am so glad you made these shorts because I wanted to see your technique on creating the waistband of the pants you made with the McCall’s pattern. This was helpful!! I like it much better than just inserting elastic and calling it a a day.
@PatternScout2 жыл бұрын
I'm so glad it was helpful! I love sewing the waistband this way. Although, inserting the waistband does allow for sizing of the elastic. But now that I know what elastic length works for me, I always do the foldover method!

I just thought of this. Can you make a video showing how you sew your garment labels on the backside of garments? Like a how to video? I find them tricky to sew and I have not been able to find a video in it. I just want to master sewing them on where they actually look neat. The rest of the garments I sew can look beautiful inside and out but the moment I attach my label, if not done right, it makes the garment look cheap. Maybe I shouldn’t wait until the end. Maybe there is a trick to pinning them. I used to use a tape that washes out to hold them in place but I am sure most don’t use that method. Just an idea for a video. Thanks!
@PatternScout2 жыл бұрын
I actually don't sew labels in my garments because I don't want to feel them 😬 But I would recommend the tape method you mentioned!

Love your videos! The shorts turned out great. I would love some instruction on shortening the front rise and lengthening the back. I have messed up so much fabric trying to get that right for me. Also, just curious, why are the pennies taped on your ruler?🙂 BTW, I made a top yesterday using the trick with sewing the interfacing on the neck edge of a shirt. Such a great tip!
@PatternScout2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Maybe one day I'll do some fitting content--it can be a journey! I really like the book Pants for Real People for fitting advice. The pennies on my ruler are to keep it elevated off my work surface so that when I draft with markers and pens, the ruler edge doesn't drag wet ink across my paper :) So glad you liked the interfacing trick!

I'm pretty much a beginner, and I'd love to try these shorts! Your video was so well done that I understood everything you did! I have a question though. I haven't made anything with an elastic waist band because when I'd try a commercially made elastic waist band product it would always dig in and itch - no matter how big or small I was. Should I expect the same thing to happen? Or was it because it was possibly the wrong size?
@PatternScout2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching, I'm glad it feels approachable! It is possible that the waistbands on store-bought pants were too tight. I always have a hard time finding store bought elastic pants because the proportions don't really work for my hip-to-waist ratio, but these are very comfy and fit really well for me in the hips and waist because I could control the proportions. hope that helps! :)

I'm binging your channel..so many great ideas. The multiple waistband stitches looked great...you mentioned that the elastic stretched out a bit but "after" you washed and dried the shorts did the elastic shrink up enough? or would you reduce the size of your elastic next time to accomodate for the stretching? Thanks...
@PatternScout2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! The waistband did shrink back up and fits well again. I actually just threw the shorts in the dryer with a wet load 🙌 it just softens the fabric and stitching so that elastic can spring back.

My sister left her sewing machine I got her years ago and she made these things seem easy enough to understand with concentration but for the life of me I repeat your videos and my brain is just not connecting your words to the screen lol it isn’t your fault I think I need hands on guidance maybe I’ll ask her to guide me as we follow along to your videos.
@joshua7892 жыл бұрын
Well done. When you are teaching people, you should do your measurement on fabric or paper live that people may be well understanding what you are teaching . You had already measured and cut it. No! Many may not understanding what you are doing.You should also write what you are saying on the screening because I don't hear all what you are saying.
