I did this about 10 years ago when we went camping out in the bush. No power, water, bathroom. My friends had a trailer and I brought a bucket with a trash bag in it. My friends thought it was hilarious because I bought a bucket to Pooh in. I wasn’t digging no hole or putting a hole into a camping chair like someone had left in the trees before we got there, it was kind of gross. With road tripping and covid. A lot of roadside bathrooms were closed. I ended up bringing that same bathroom bucket with me on road trips so just in case it was more than pee. Best money you can buy for just in case. You’ll realize you’ll need one when you have to go and you have nowhere to go. Get one before it happens.

You can get those lids at Home Depot & Lowes, too. After the 1989 SF Bay Area Earthquake getting one of those lids & using a 5 gallon bucket became a popular way to store emergency supplies in the hall closet. Still a good idea if for just “the sanitation dept”.

You're hilarious XD Thanks for sharing this. Now a follow-up question: where do I put the bag once it's ready to get rid of? Lots of theories about burning or burying. What do you personally think is best for your family?
@RoguePreparedness
@RoguePreparedness Жыл бұрын
Yes there are a lot of theories and personal preferences. Personally, I’d prefer to bury it, but if you choose to burn it, just make sure you’re wearing a mask and monitoring from a safe distance.

Another tip that a lot of ppl overlook are toilet chairs. You can find them in mobility shops or thrown out around hospitals and aged care facilities. Put that over the bucket to have a much better and more seat that can bare more weight, is long lasting and much more comfortable, the handles are a plus to get off the toilet should you be injured in a SHTF emergency situation.

It was 1982 before I had a flushing toilet. an outhouse and a bucket was all that I ever had in my home until after I had been married for a year and had my first child. Of course I knew what they were and had used them at school and such as I was already graduated from highschool for 3 years by then.

Thanks for the information. Especially about substrates and basic composting additives... great start. I don't know jack about this subject. (But I have considered taking a job at a water treatment facility. Because, who really thinks about that career.? 1. Good pay! 2. Location: anywhere on the planet!... the Moon, Mars.... 3. Probably a job for life e.g.: no layoffs, cutbacks..... I mowed lawns, delivered newspapers, scooped ice cream, worked for a General Contractor, bagged groceries, attended community College (That didn't work out because when the G.C. needs you on a job/contract, they expect you to devote your life to their profit and your demise!). Basursically, you see stop attending your college courses, for some measly pay UHG! I ended up joining the military (which wasn't the best place for me)

My Lou does not fit a Home Depot bucket, or a Canadian tire bucket… lucky to find someone with a 20 year old bucket, that works

We used the same setup back when we had our lake lot in 2003-2009. It’s not perfect but it’s way better than traveling a half mile to the bathhouse at 2am.

Thanks. I am going to some campgrounds but I have stomach issues and will be in trouble if a bathroom is locked or I can’t make it in time. I was thinking could I just make this, and thank you for showing it is possible.

I'd use kitty litter because I have cats so kitty litter always on hand, or sand ( and some baking soda) line the bucket in compost bags and were golden . I'd just pee anywhere the buckets for poops lmao

Love all the potty talk. lol There is a guy that is offgrid farming that empties his buckets into his composting bin. He composts everything for more thn a year and then puts it on his vegitable garden. A bit extreme but he has been doing it a while and I think his wife in a nurse. Neither of them seem to get sick or have any problems with it.

I would only compost it down for plants that we won't be eating from. But to each their own.

My only concern is how bad that will smell. Is there anything you prefer for compost, that works to keep that issue in check? Thank you.

Anything works, like I mentioned, even the RV toilet supplies works. But you’re also going to be emptying at least once a week.

We keep pine pellet animal bedding on hand for this. I haven't had to use it yet, thank goodness, but it's designed to absorb liquid and neutralize odor. You can get large 40 or 50 lb bags for horse stalls at places like Blains Farm and Fleet or Tractor Supply. There's a 20 lb bag for small animals that I get with activated charcoal in addition to the pine for additional odor control.

We use a corn based cat litter. Our well pump failed on a Friday. It was the following Tuesday before we could get the issue resolved. We have an old Reliance Hassock (hassock with toilet hidden inside) and their Luggable Loo 5 gal bucket version. Because we use cat litter and keep liquid waste to a minimum, there was no smell. Line the bucket with a trashbag. Add a small amount of litter. Then, cover each deposit with more litter. When needed, remove the bag and double bag it. Our area allows it to be discarded in the trash. For liquids, men can use a large fruit juice container. There are devices (similar to a funnel) that ladies can use with the juice bottle. Urine is disposed of in accordance with local guidelines. Generally, it can be emptied in a wooded area 200 feet from wells, springs or creeks. Water a tree.

My friend adds her coffee grounds from morning brew to her composting toilet while camping. Says it adds a different strong smell to the mix on top of whatever medium she’s using (saw dust she gets for free).
