Modern Builds

7 жыл бұрын

Today on Modern Builds, I'm renovating the entryway / foyer / mudroom at my cameraman Caleb's. We did all of this for right around $250 in materials and supplies. We replaced the old tile with new laminate wood floors, added homemade square MDF trim, replaced the old light fixture and popcorn ceilings, and made a killer mirror accent wall. Check it out!
Huge thanks to Sylvania for sponsoring this video. Be sure and check out their full line of Smart+ Products: (Amazon) geni.us/ocB24W

The author does like to from scratch, kzbin.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.

As a person/n00b who is remodeling a home on their own, it is SO GREAT to see someone run into issues with projects and the solutions used to tackle them. I really appreciate your budget and practical take in all your videos and I really enjoy the projects like this! Thanks, Mike!

Be sure to test your popcorn ceilings before removing because they can have asbestos in them. Mine did.

Modern Builds The good news is that it's such a small area and by using water, you keep the dust down so it's most likely not a problem.

the paint could also have Lead Based paint if property was built before 1978. Great comment! Great video!

Came here to say the same thing. I'm usually not a safety patrol kinda guy, but asbestos is no joke, and if the popcorn was put in before 1980 (or even after in some cases), then the chances are really high that it has asbestos in it. Also, Mike, do yourself a favour and wear a dust mask of some variety when you are cutting MDF. 20 years from now, if you keep doing this sort of thing, you will wish you had.

Two things: really cool idea with the self made MDF trim! And another thing to consider when the trim and the door is off is actually lowering the jamb. After taking the carpet and padding out to replace it with underlay and laminate there's usually a larger/awkward looking gap. Really enjoyed the video.

Cool tip with the mirrors, we had a massive mirror wall in our old place and I wanted to find a way to get the same effect in my new house. The mirrors/custom trimmed ones cost a ton of money for a very similar effect to what you produced, so I may adopt that into some Reno in the near future
