@Fishaholic4 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, go for a powerhead with 3 to 5 times flow rate of the tank volume. 1200 litre per hour till 2000 litre per hour would be good. 12mm pipe would do the job or you can go bit bigger.

Hi Arka, I filled the filter with aquarium water and after turning on the power, suction was created automatically. Hi William, inlet and outlet should be ideally at the opposite end. Since it is a small tank so it won't make much difference as 200lph filter for 20l tank would be more than enough filtration.

Put the filter lower than the aquarium's water level, then the flow into the filter will be faster but make sure your pump is able to return the water at that lowered height. Right now you can see the return of water to the filter is very slow because of low siphon effect.

Hey mate, copying my reply here again. It is recommend that the water is changed 3-5 times per hour. For your tank it would be 453 litre per hour to 755 litre per hour. Power head is almost close to Max recommendation so should do a good job. Air pump is a bonus, will help in aeration. Not having one won't be a issue.

Friend sorry for the silly question, how is the water pulled into the filter? the pump takes the water into the aquarium, but how does it get into the filter?
@Fishaholic2 жыл бұрын
Hi, it works exactly the same way as a store bought canister filter. After building the filter, fill it with water and turn ON the pump. Water from the filter will enter the aquarium through the pump and will be replaced by the water entering from aquarium
@kwaiuse58622 жыл бұрын

@@Fishaholic I'm still a little confused, because normally other canister filters pull the water in due to gravity since they are below the aquarium. Then the pump pushes the water back to the aquarium
@samdhoss4 жыл бұрын
nice mate. wanna ask.. does the container need to be airtight to pull water? does it work if the container is placed higher/lower?
@Fishaholic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, I believe it has to be air tight so there is no risk of water leakage too. I haven't tried raising the filter above the tank but it works if it is at same level. Would work if filter is located under the tank as it is basically a canister filter. I have uploaded videos of diy filter located above a tank, might be worth looking if you want to build a aquarium top filter.

Good build. Why put the pump at the top since it appears submersible, not criticizing just wondering? The suction should have a screen or foam around it to keep the fish from getting injured, I've had that happen. I'm going to order some of those balls and try them out.
@ninjasking98794 жыл бұрын
This design is awesome, I tried making it today and tested it out, but i found there isn't much water coming in from the tank into the food container, and the water level in the food container actually goes down (in contrast to yours, where the water level remains the same). I think the reason might be because I didn't apply sealant where the wire comes out, so it isn't fully airtight. Could that be the problem?
@Fishaholic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ninjasking, it is definitely the problem. Water level shouldn't go down otherwise. Apply some sealant and test it again. Let me know how you go. Appreciate your time mate

Once you off the motor, water from aquarium continues to flow into ur filter and overflow, and water may leak through your cap if not sealed properly

Thanks mate. Just a question- when power goes off, would the water flowing to the canister stop? And how , kindly explain
@Fishaholic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Venkata, water is pushed out of canister due to the pump and it creates suction which forces water to flow into the canister. Once power goes off then the flow will stop automatically as no water will be pushed out of the canister.

@@Fishaholic thanks much mate. I wanted to build one canister for a 80 litre tank. What should be the capacity of canister filter and pump? Please advise.

There won't be any water leakage as the container is air tight same like a canister filter. But won't be good for fish as beneficial bacteria might die if power is off for extended period of time. Appreciate your comment
