You should look into proper electrical connection, soldering, crimping, or wire nuts, I wouldn't trust twist and tape especially for mains voltage.

Having recently built one like this I cannot stress the point enough that you need to test the seal on the container before you get to the point everything is assebled. Also I put the pump on the bottom to not make it top heavy, and so media you change often is on top. Zeolite, carbon, fine filter, floss from bottom to top.

Hi Hamid, agree on both points that you have mentioned in your comment. Since it is a 20L tank and plants are fully established thats why I didn't care too much about the efficiency of the canister filter. But for a larger tank, this is something I can not ignore. Thank you

Also then do i need to attach another pump to the cannister inlet pipe that comes out of the awuarium, to create the suction?

Hi Arka, I filled the filter with aquarium water and after turning on the power, suction was created automatically. If it is not working for you then you could always siphon the water or use your mouth to suck water out of the outlet. Once water starts coming out then turn on the power. Let me know how you go

Put the filter lower than the aquarium's water level, then the flow into the filter will be faster but make sure your pump is able to return the water at that lowered height. Right now you can see the return of water to the filter is very slow because of low siphon effect.

Hey mate, copying my reply here again. It is recommend that the water is changed 3-5 times per hour. For your tank it would be 453 litre per hour to 755 litre per hour. Power head is almost close to Max recommendation so should do a good job. Air pump is a bonus, will help in aeration. Not having one won't be a issue.

Friend sorry for the silly question, how is the water pulled into the filter? the pump takes the water into the aquarium, but how does it get into the filter?
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, it works exactly the same way as a store bought canister filter. After building the filter, fill it with water and turn ON the pump. Water from the filter will enter the aquarium through the pump and will be replaced by the water entering from aquarium

nice mate. wanna ask.. does the container need to be airtight to pull water? does it work if the container is placed higher/lower?
@Fishaholic

Hi Sam, I believe it has to be air tight so there is no risk of water leakage too. I haven't tried raising the filter above the tank but it works if it is at same level. Would work if filter is located under the tank as it is basically a canister filter. I have uploaded videos of diy filter located above a tank, might be worth looking if you want to build a aquarium top filter.

This design is awesome, I tried making it today and tested it out, but i found there isn't much water coming in from the tank into the food container, and the water level in the food container actually goes down (in contrast to yours, where the water level remains the same). I think the reason might be because I didn't apply sealant where the wire comes out, so it isn't fully airtight. Could that be the problem?
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ninjasking, it is definitely the problem. Water level shouldn't go down otherwise. Apply some sealant and test it again. Let me know how you go. Appreciate your time mate

Once you off the motor, water from aquarium continues to flow into ur filter and overflow, and water may leak through your cap if not sealed properly
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 4 жыл бұрын
Completely agree Mahesh, it is very important to use an air tight container with a seal around the lid to avoid any water leakage. Testing prior to use will determine that. Appreciate your feedback mate and thank you for watching the video.

Thanks mate. Just a question- when power goes off, would the water flowing to the canister stop? And how , kindly explain
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Venkata, water is pushed out of canister due to the pump and it creates suction which forces water to flow into the canister. Once power goes off then the flow will stop automatically as no water will be pushed out of the canister.

@@Fishaholic thanks much mate. I wanted to build one canister for a 80 litre tank. What should be the capacity of canister filter and pump? Please advise.
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the bioload of your fish and if there are plants in the tank. Go for atleast couple of liters canister and pump anywhere from 400 to 600 lph as lifting height will reduce the flow rate

Can u tell me the proportion for fresh water tank. If I have 20litres tank then what should be the jar capacity use for diy in litres ???
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, there is no such proportion, any extra volume will add to the capacity of the aquarium. You could even a sponge filter in the tank and it will do filtration. By adding a separate canister filter will boost the capacity and you can add extra fish in the tank. Hope it make sense.

@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 3 жыл бұрын
Thats correct Reza, it works similar to store bought canister filter. You could always place a pump inside the tank and connect it to the inlet, won't require a pump inside canister in that case.

Only thing is it should be air sealed container. And am sure this filter will no last longer. When u open the container regularly for filter clean lid will start loosen and possible air leak which will lead to no water return from aquarium to filter. But this looks cool but not last for longer.

I'm curious that how could the pipe even draws water back to the filter if there's no mechanical power
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 4 жыл бұрын
Its due to the pressure build up inside the canister that withdraws water from the aquarium. Same mechanism as a store bought canister filter. The container needs to be airtight so there pressure is maintain at all time. Appreciate your comment.

@@Fishaholic im afraid what happens if the power goes off will the airtight container stop the water flow i mean can we sit back cool without thinking about any water leakage
@Fishaholic
@Fishaholic 4 жыл бұрын
There won't be any water leakage as the container is air tight same like a canister filter. But won't be good for fish as beneficial bacteria might die if power is off for extended period of time. Appreciate your comment
