Build your own ground pod for eye level images of ground birds, mammals and other photographic subjects. We have all heard that one of the best ways to improve our images is to take them at eye level of the animal. A ground pod makes this task so simple.

I couldn't justify the expense of a pod before... but wanted one. Now I am headed to the store for a frying pan to make my own! Awesome $$ saving how-to! Much appreciated.

Hi Moose, as a dog photographer I've been looking at platypods...what a fabulously inventive idea to use a frying pan. Great video, well explained. Thank you.

I have done lots of dogs, I assume you will use a zoom like 70-200 or 100-400. I would recommend the larger frying pan as more stable and less likely yo tip if you need to help dog

I also like using potato chip bars, small foil like ones, for getting ears peaked up with dogs, not so good with grizzly bears, they want the smell of the chips and you risk an encounter. Of course, Rotties and Dobbies can also give a bit of an encounter

@@MooseHenderson1 - Thank you for the extra tips on getting those winning dog shots. I really appreciate it. Thanks. I love your sense of humour, as far as I know there are no grizzly bears in the UK, but plenty of Grizzlies 😁. Really pleased I came across your channel. Thank you Moose.

Ingenious! You could go to a garden center and buy a large plastic plate for putting under flower pots. That should be cheaper and you don't have to remove the handle.

I really like the idea of making something for a 1/10 to cost of buying it. Instead of using a hole saw one could also just approximate to spacer with a hand saw. Takes a little more time but can be done. Or just even a square block.

Hi there nice idea, one thing I would do is use a flat head bolt so that would stop it catching on the ground., if you could not find a flat head bolt then you could hammer a bent in the pan to lift it off the ground.

Thanks! Nice and easy way of making a ground pod. But recently I was on a beach and wind was so fierce that at lower level, sand was hitting my feet like crazy. I ate lots of sand particles while standing. My backpack collected lot of sand in its netting and still dropping sand to the floor.

I just replaced my old 10 in, heavy frying pan with a new one. I used the old one to make this ground pod. It turned out very nice but at my age, I find it a little low. I may get a 6 in bolt to raise it up. Just curious, how does one get their face to the ground when the ARCA plate is about level with the pan?

Great video, I just made my ground pod last week also used an old frying pan which my wife found for me. I tested it with my D4 and 300mm VR II attached to it with a swing and not a ball head, it worked flawlessly and it makes me really happy. I've put a link here to my FB page where I have some photos posted of my ground pod (if not aloud I'll delete the link) facebook.com/pimnauta/posts/3557558487620882 I used 4 countersunk headed bolts to attach the spacer block onto the frying pan, the bottom of the pan stays flat because of the countersunk headed bolts so you can also work with this ground pod on hard surfaces.
