I also did a Strat kit from Solo. I attempted my first relic job on it. I was amazed! I have a Strat that looks and feels like it's 50 years old and I only have a little over $200 in everything! It's also one of my favorites to play! I think it makes a big difference when you assemble and finish your own guitar. You have a different connection with it than if you just bought it off the rack at a store or bought one used. There's part of you in that guitar. Something that's your creation! It's a good feeling! I highly recommend doing one if you have any kind of diy skills!

So true! I did my 1977 strat in nitro. Installed Hand wound pickups and aged the hardware. I’m so in love with that guitar! I put a lot of sweat into it :)

Lucas Crossley relics are so cool. I want to do some handwound pickups myself! I've done a couple 3 pole cigar box ones that really turned out nice. I'm ready for a 6 pole next! I'd like to build another Strat...maybe buy a body and neck separately and do the whole partscaster thing. I just love the sound of a Strat. Nothing like it!

Lucas Crossley I've been thinking of getting on Facebook! Other people were wanting to see some of my work too. I just finished a crazy project today...an electric ukulele. I picked up a kit at a yardsale that a guy never started. Figured it would be good practice for a sunburst finish! I made up some of my own dyes and it turned out pretty cool! Used a piezo with volume control. Looks cool! Maybe this week I'll set up something on Facebook. Thanks for your interest!😀

Lucas Crossley oh ya! You can always upgrade the pickups and tuners if you like. With such a small cost, it makes it affordable to spend some money on extras!

I bought a similar kit, w/o binding, and, solderless connectors. Alder body, maple fretboard, finished with boiled linseed oil. Good kit

Oh gotcha. Same as me ;). I thought maybe it was from a different company. Solo stuff is pretty decent. They’ve got a lot of good stuff.

I am planning to purchase a kit from solo soon. How would you say this guitar compares to it's name-brand counterparts? Would the solo tele be on par with a Squire Affinity series, Fender Standard series, etc?
@LucasCrossleyGuitar
@LucasCrossleyGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin. Thanks for taking time to comment on the video. Would I say this kit is on par with Squire Affinity or Standard.....well the reality is that in some ways it's different than those guitars. The main difference is the 12" radius on the fingerboard and the fact that the guitar is more or less unfinished. Certainly finishing the guitar so it looks and feels like a factory guitar takes some skill and you would have to invest in the paints and things to do it. Have a look at Brad Angove's channel for some finishing ideas. The guitar is quite playable and I thought sounded very authentic as a Telecaster when you buy the alder kit. The other thing to note is that the body is multiple pieces and not cut the same way as a factory Fender would be. The affinity sells for around 260 Canadian and I bought this kit for 120. So if you're looking for a factory finished guitar the Squire might be the way to go. In either case you can always upgrade tuners, pickups and hardware on either guitar.

@@LucasCrossleyGuitar thanks for all of the info! I'm looking for a project in general, so I think these are the way to go. I would be interested to see how the different diameter neck makes the guitar feel. I grew up playing strats. I love the sound from them (I have both an affinity and an American standard), but I have recently moved over to a semi-hollow PRS just for the sake of the playability of their neck.
@LucasCrossleyGuitar
@LucasCrossleyGuitar 5 жыл бұрын
Dustin Marlowe Happy to chat with a fellow guitar enthusiast. The neck for me is such a huge factor. I haven't spent much time with PRS but I do like their guitars a lot. They sit right between Fender and Gibson with that 25" scale length. That's probably a real sweet spot. FWIW Solo Music Gear has a retail store in Mississauga I was able to go and visit them and try one of the kits first. Be aware that I have also had a couple of folks mention that they needed some minor fretwork done to really optimize the playing. Solo advertises the kits as dressed and leveled. In my case, the first kit had a fret that was dinged. I took it back and they swapped it out for me and I didn't require any additional fretwork. Just keep that in mind. I am a stainless steel fret guy for those kind of reasons. Nickel is too soft and requires regular maintenance if you play a lot.

Did you have to put any finish on the body and/or neck?
@LucasCrossleyGuitar
@LucasCrossleyGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, I chose not to. They come with a light coat of rough finish just enough to seal the wood. It wouldn't be too bad to give it a light sanding and finish it in some way.

I just bought the tck-15 solo kit.. it’s got a rough poly sealer already, my question, after a light sand, can I paint it or will I need more sealer
@LucasCrossleyGuitar

Should be able to go straight to paint but I would phone the guys at solo to be sure. Assuming it’s alder and not ash.

Fair point. An oversight on my part. I had linked to an old blog post but that’s gone know. Honestly it’s 6 nuts and less than 30 screws to “assemble” it. It’s stupid simple. Cheers.
