Finally found the supplies for making this, but had to sub aloe vera lotion for the normal. It came out thinner, like for a spritzer, but my husband prefers it that way. A bigger spray bottle can sanitize things like his steering wheel & such (as he is a trucker). Thank you again for making this video.

UPDATE/CORRECTION: Hi Everyone! Due to new information we need to make a correction. Since our video upload we have learned new information regarding the recipe ratio. We used 91% Isopropyl alcohol to make the hand sanitizer. In this video 60% or higher Isopropyl alcohol is stated as sufficient to use, but we have since learned that a higher alcohol percentage is needed. When the Aloe Vera is added to the alcohol it dilutes the alcohol and lowers the alcohol content of the finished sanitizer. It is recommended that 91% Isopropyl or higher should be used for this recipe to achieve the minimum 60% alcohol or higher completed hand sanitizer. We acquired this information through the communication of everyone in the comments of this video. The questions asked prompted more research by us and everyone else to help get answers. We can not thank you all enough for helping us, but most of all for helping each other!!! That is what it is all about!! We don’t have all the answers and greatly appreciate the help and support! We are all in this together!! Hand sanitizer does not take the place of washing your hands with soap and water when available! Keep washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water often! This is the best way to help keep your hands clean and protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Thank you!! We have also attached the links to the CDC website and the link for the CDC flyer that we have in our video description. www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html www.cdc.gov/handwashing/pdf/hand-sanitizer-factsheet.pdf Thank you so very much! Good stuff , Disinfect all your bottles , measures etc before you start , use a little of the alcohol in each bottle , pour off the residue and let them air dry , Your hand rub should end up 60-70% alcohol ,That is strong enough , If you are going to add an essential oil use one that also has disinfectant properties like Lavender oil. It is said to have antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties , also Peppermint , Tea tree, Eucalyptus , google it , some of these may be more acceptable for some family members .

Water doesn't have to be hot when you wash your hands. The total solution that you make alcohol + aloe vera should be 60% or higher alcohol. So what you said originally is correct. Technically, you don't need aloe vera. It is just to keep your hands from drying out. Worst case you could get grain alcohol (151 proof / 75.5% alcohol) from a liqueur store. However, Isopropyl alcohol will certainly be cheaper. If you add aloe vera you need to keep the amount low enough to not dilute the alcohol below 60%.

Can you use the thick aloe vera drink...it has a very thick consistency
@KeepingSistersKreative4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question Karen. The Aloe Vera gel does help with thickening, but is used mostly for moisturizing and protection from the drying effects of the alcohol. I can't recommend a drink for use on your skin, but using glycerin found at pharmacies and drug stores is a good substitute for the Aloe Vera. Take good care.

Will adding the aloe vera reduce the effects/percentage of the alcohol?
@KeepingSistersKreative4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, the Aloe Vera does reduce the alcohol percentage that is why using a higher % Isopropyl helps maintain the alcohol level in the final mixture. I used 91% Isopropyl alcohol. I hope this was helpful. Thank you.
@TechieTexan4 жыл бұрын
GG I read up on articles on how much the alcohol is diluted and did the math. 91 x .67 (2/3 of the alcohol in the recipe) will bring the percentage to 60.97%, which is recommended by the CDC to kill the bacteria and germs in a hand sanitizer. I tried this yesterday with 70% and 91% alcohol. The batch came out way better for the 91% and the smell wasn’t as strong either. I ended up putting a few drops of Vitamin E and Jojoba oil (from my homemade cuticle oil) into the mix, which created a gel consistency. The fragrance of the aloe was pleasant so I didn’t add essential oils. Hope this helps.

Cool DIY project! Time for improvising as things are wiped out by panicking horders! In the Medical Field... we use a 100:1 bleach mixture for wiping down,and a 10:1 ratio for obvious blood, or anything else that may come out from the human body. These ratios were determined to be sufficient for germ killing concentrations. So rather then those store bought concoctions costing $$$,simply pick up 2 spray bottles from the local Dollar store make yourself a bottle of each strength, and labels them accordingly. You've just made spray sanitizer for PENNIES. Use the money you just saved for more preps!

Hi Marla! This hand sanitizer recipe is for use with an alcohol base. If you are not able to find the 91% Isopropyl alcohol, Ethanol can be used. 95% (180 proof) Everclear is Ethanol. This is a clear alcohol and can be found at a liquor store. It can be used in place of the Isopropyl. Do not use anything with Methanol...this is toxic! Diluting the alcohol with a aloe, reduces the efficiency of it, correct? I like mine to be thicker.
@KeepingSistersKreative4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the alcohol is diluted when the Aloe Vera is added. This lowers the alcohol content of the finished sanitizer. It is recommended 91% or higher to be used for this recipe to achieve the 60% and higher completed hand sanitizer. Take care and thank you for your question. :)

Does anyone know what you could use instead of the Aloe Vera?
@KeepingSistersKreative4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your question! I believe you can you use Glycerin instead of the Aloe Vera. Glycerin helps condition, moisturize and protect skin like Aloe Vera. I looked up where to find it. It should be available online or at any pharmacy or drugstore. I just found 100% Glycerin at Walgreens online and CVS. I hope this is helpful!!

@@KeepingSistersKreative Only if you use your own bars and soap and you wash your hands with anti bacterial soap and make sure you don't place the soap on public places. Soap and water isn't better. The concept of it is better However, washing your hands with soap in a public place including a soap despenser will leave you open to other micro germs apart from Corona virus. For example, fecal matter, other people's blood from cuts and grazes other people's bacteria in general. So using soap and water is just a alternative. That's why people wash their services with things like Detol. It's to make sure little bacteria causing infections are wiped out. So really, the only way soap and water is better than a 70 percent alcohol solution hand sanitiser or above is. Washing the services down that you would wash your hands with. Use Dettol or a bacterial and virus solution down before you wash anything. Don't share soap with anyone ( get your own bars or squeezable soap ) especially if you are in a public place ( don't assume the person who used the toilet before you is "clean because they washed their hands", get anti bacterial and anti viral soap wash your hands with warm water ( you can look up the temperatures online as to how hot water has to be to clean and kill bacteria ) then after you have washed your hands take your own towel with you in something that will contain bacteria say a plastic box like a lunch box. Dry your hands and safely pack your towel back into the box. Remember exposing damp towels will also breed bacteria ) then after you have dried your hands, wash again with hand sanitiser. Again, the higher the alcohol intake the more likely you will have at killing germs and bacteria. Medical alcohol hand wash often contains 80 percent or above alcohol. Remember, never share wash dispenses, soap in public places or towels. Always bring your own even if you go out. Washing your hands may " protect you against the c virus " but it may not protect you against other strains

@@KeepingSistersKreative I am glad you used alcohol of that percentage. Most people were using 60 to 70 percent alcohol to begin with then watering it down with aloe gel. With that percentage mixing it with a gel should be fine.

home chemists, such bad science. Now my chemistry is pretty far away but if 90% alcohol is already at 9:1 dilution you can go no lower then 7:3 dilution. aloe Vera is mostly water. you should be using 77ml of 90% alcohol for 23ml of aloe. the end result will be around 70% alcohol.

2 things: 1) The purpose of the essential oils is NOT just for scent. Real essential oils made from plants contain fairly powerful antimicrobial properties, but that only if you buy pure plant-based essential oils, not the cheap kind that are made from petroleum by-products. 2) Aloe vera gel is normally clear and colorless. I don't know what you were using that was blue, but I would question how much aloe vera was actually in it and what other chemical were added. Again, real aloe vera gel is made from plants, not from synthetic chemicals. Making your own hand sanitizer is a great idea, but why not use high quality ingredients that give you the added benefits of real plant substances?
@KeepingSistersKreative4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. We do understand essential oils are not just for fragrance purposes and have a strong antimicrobial benefit. It was not our intention to imply otherwise. Our intention in posting this video was to help provide an alternative for the limited availablility of hand sanitizers. We have tried to reiterate that hand sanitizer use is not a replacement for washing your hands with soap and water. It is to be used ONLY when soap and water is not available. We have stressed in our description the importance of washing your hands often and included the CDC website information. Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to help keep your hands clean and protect yourself and family from getting sick. Our intention is always to help. We do agree that using the best quality ingredients is ideal when available. We appreciate all of the information you have provided to us. Thank you again and take good care!
