This is the first year I've utilized the three different varieties of nut trees we have on our property. Thank you so much for sharing this information I look forward to making syrups from our hickory tree pecan tree.abd black walnut tree. Harvest has been good so far. Nuts are thick and healthy. God gives us food , at times we just need to lower ourselves and pick it up.

I heard it was a great year for nuts. Im so happy for you! Id love to have a pecan tree, they are my favorite. There are these nut collectors that look like round metal cages on a pole that rolls along the ground and picks up nuts. They work wonderfully. Maybe that would help you collect them. Thanks bunches for watching. Happy syruping!

Great video. I saw this posted on the small KZbin Homesteaders Facebook page and had to check you guys out. We have a ton of Hickory trees and have always wanted to try it. Thank you so much for sharing and we are looking forward to checking out your other videos. Steph and Chris

Hi Steph & Chris Thanks bunches for coming over. With your channel name, I'd imagine you do have a lot of these trees! Lucky you because this is way easier to make than Maple Syrup and still tastes sooo good. Love to hear what you think of it if you try it out.

I have made this before but I didn't use so much water and didn't add sugar .It was really good to put on chicken as a marinade or sauce. It has a flavor like hickory smoked meat or barbeque .

If you're collecting bark and making the syrup immediately, skip the oven part. Roasting the bark in the oven is so you can dry and store the bark for future use (to prevent mold, not kill bugs as stated in the video). The boiling water part will take care of any insects etc. that's hidden in the bark.

Thanks for the info. We definitely plan to make a second round this year and have been reading up more. Thanks for watching!

I’m never heard of hickory syrup before. I will have to keep my eye out for some trees and try to make this. How much bark do you need per jar? Also, what brand was the strainer you were using? A strainer like that could come in handy.
@HomesteadHopeful3 жыл бұрын
The more bark, the stronger the flavor. We had about equal to a five gallon bucket full of bark and it made 10 pints. But it will fluctuate because of how much liquid it takes to cover the bark, then how much liquid is needed to boil down to reach syrup stage. The strainer was left behind by the previous owner. I believe it's a dairy strainer. There's no markings on it. Sorry 😐 It is helpful in removing the large debris.

Can you collect bark anytime of year of just winter time
@HomesteadHopeful Жыл бұрын
You can harvest year round you just might end up with more bugs during warmer months. The taste may also change some, but that could be a fun experiment!

where did you get that strainer thing??? I want one

I love maple syrup, everything walnuts, but hickory nuts have my favorite flavour, sitting out under the tree. You say it has a taste reminiscent of maple syrup, but if it's a stronger flavour I'll like it better for sure.
@HomesteadHopeful3 жыл бұрын
If you already like hickory nuts, you’ll love this. It does have an underlying nuttiness to it. Some of the people we gifted it to prefer it now over maple syrup. Thanks for watching!

Not for hickory trees. They don't give sap like maple and birch trees do. The flavor comes the hickory bark.

Ha! We did, just had a crappy camera angle so didn't include it. It's delicious. As sweet as maple syrup but a bit smokey tasting.
@ralphb.38022 жыл бұрын
Don’t confuse hickory bark syrup with maple syrup. Hickory bark syrup is a flavored sugar syrup similar to golden syrup. It’s sweetness comes from corn sugar. Where Maple syrups sweetness comes from the sap of the maple tree.
@HomesteadHopeful2 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. Thank you for helping clarify that for some.
