DIY Honeycomb Grid for Elgato Key Light

Hi friends! This week I build a DIY honeycomb grid for my Elgato Key Light out of foamcore for under $10. Follow along and let me know down in the comments what you're doing for lighting right now - I'm always excited to learn new methods & approaches.

Awesome video Morgan. Showing side by side comparisons of the footage with and without the honeycomb would have been a nice touch. Great invention none the less.

I recently made one from left over celling light covers. Sprayed one in plaste dip flat blac and kept one bright silver to test out. Going to be using tese for smallrig led vedio lights.

@@morganclemens just made a concept grid with a 6pk beer box after your video for my mini light, and will now make a proper one for both my elgato key light and mini. Will now bring home some heavier duty gear and build one proper thanks to your video for a cheap idea. I have this stuff all at work. Cheers

This is a fantastic idea! And black foam core is available at many art supply stores, so that would cut out the need for paint. Also, I wonder if there is a way to cut opposing slots in the strips where they intersect, much like what you'd find in moving boxes that have the inserts for glassware. There is a company over in Germany that is making 3D Printed grids for both the Key Light and Key Light Air, but they are not currently available on the website, and they are also quite expensive, so this may be something I will need to try. I wonder why all these panel light companies are not making grids, when clearly there are many of us that demand them for our streaming setups. Elgato, LumeCube, none that I've found. Thanks again. When I was getting ready to make this video I also debated going to a local maker space and just 3D printing the components / doing a CNC out of lightweight wood. Would definitely recommend cutting out the slits - that would have made the build much easier. I am also debating 3D printing a clip for easier deployment of the grid since taping it up every time can break the 'flow'. Good luck with the build!

Thank you for the reply. I believe a fabric grid would be ideal, but that is much more difficult to DIY actually, so your solution is a great one in the meantime. @@morganclemens

I was just thinking the opposing slits would be the way to go. I'll have to try this out

Only if you own a 3D printer. However you can download a design and ask a professional 3D printing company to make one for you. I was quoted about AUD$110 to make a softbox for my Elgato Key Light.

Awesome. How have you found the tape? Is it sticking well? Also, the before and after examples at the end, was that the same time of day? The before seems very well lit, and the after seems much darker in the background. I guess I'm just trying to understand the before/after examples and if the environment was comparable.

Hey! After a week the tape is sicking just fine. For the second shot I closed all of the blinds and turned off any other ambient lights for a more controlled lighting environment. I might go back to having a bit more light in the background but I'll probably do it with lamps/small accent lighting to control the light a bit better.
