I very much enjoy seeing this project go onward. We built our cottage, workshop firewood sheds and more and started with dense bush on a 30 degree slope. I still wonder how we did it. However we are happy and earned a deep sense of accomplishment. I admit there were a few times I wondered what we got ourselves into, but knowing quitting was not an option it was a lot easier. Love Orygun! Great choice! we live in the Southern Gulf Islands in Canada's wet coast. Seriously rooting for you both. No matter what you see in the comment section you are doing pretty well fine as far as I'm concerned.

An old trick from the old day we'd unroll copper sheets before we set the sill plate. The natural occurring copper sulfate would kill any bug or whatever from getting inside. The home I live in was built in 1947 and it still has it. We have never had any problems with anything.

Great work guys! I've been in the industry for 15 years and still look back on things I did 2-3 years ago and wonder "what was I thinking?" For a non-professional team the two of you are doing amazing! I could criticize this little thing or another (like many of the comments) but I'm sure that's what my workers say about me behind my back some days. Thanks for the videos as I love building off-grid and seeing someone else succeed in the same.

You probably won't read this and if you do you'll probably ignore it anyway, but, don't trust that big rollup measuring tape you have... it will stretch. compare it to a 100' steel tape with both pulled tight. Those cloth/plastic tapes are fine for landscaping and general +/- 2" things but for foundation work stick with a steel tape measure or learn to enjoy cursing.

@dpsears240z7 жыл бұрын
I believe arsenic went away in late 2003 in wood preservatives.
@ht_person7 жыл бұрын
This is no longer true... If your residential wood structure was built before 2004 and is not made of cedar or redwood, it was most likely constructed with wood pressure-treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA). CCA is a chemical preservative comprised of arsenic, chromium, and copper. First produced decades ago, it was a major source of treated-wood for decks, playgrounds, and other outdoor residential structures until 2004.

I've always called this "The Staple Problem." You're working at your desk and need to staple two sheets of paper together. But you're out of staples. So you go to the supply closet, but they have the "new" staples because the company is giving everyone new staplers. So you go to the Executive Assistant and ask for a new stapler, but he requires that you formally submit a request through the corporate "supplies portal." And so it continues... By the end of the day, you realize you have successfully stapled two sheets of paper together, and nothing else. And you feel both a sense of accomplishment for getting through that morass of bureaucracy, and a feeling of doom about the fate of humankind. This... may have... happened to someone I know.

If you put dish liquid in a squirt bottle of water and spray in on your tire any air leak will blow bubbles. Test the around the rim and the valve stem first. It could be just a bad valve. Cheap and easy fix.
@patrickkeller21937 жыл бұрын
It probably doesn't matter as much on a backhoe, but if you have a bad valve on your car, replace it quickly. I had a bad valve blow at 110 mph on the highway (German); instant decompression. I managed to stop safely, but the carcass was shod. Cost me 130 bucks and 5 for the valve.

Did you happen to put marks on the wall where the Renata are so you can streaky a string link? Just to be on the safe side I’d use a metal detector to locate the rebar just to be sure. That way you should even come close to them when drilling. Also there are adhesives that are as strong or stronger than bolts especially since it’s mainly keeping the plates from sliding.

Ground contact and none ground contact timber, often use the treatment chemicals but usually the timber species is slightly different, in your case they are incised for better penetration of the chemical, often they Kiln dry ground contact timber so it takes on more chemical. It's all about percentages of mixture and treatment loading. I hope in the states it's better than here in the uk? As we are having terrible issues with treatment here.
@whitacrebespoke7 жыл бұрын
Andy Smith I agree entirely, I've actually stopped fencing as a business because of timber failiures we got some at home that even the rails have rotted on however this was post CCA ban pre economic crash so the market was massive in imported timber which is what I'd say this timber was it was also machined so less likely to take treatment. What annoys me is loosing jobs priced with class 4 or good pressure creo to clowns with spruce class 3 or dipped creo or worse shale oil in place of proper creosote the customer does not care, a lot of merchants do not care they just want the cheap option. It's hard to find rails in the uk treated to class 4 that really annoys me. These guys would not have got those Cill plates in the uk treated to class 4 off the shelf. There's too many cowboy outfits treating one place I have used in the past the never change the solution strength it stays set for bare minimum protection. It looks green it's good to go. Very few places are getting and penetration either.
@boysrback56907 жыл бұрын
Treated lumber since the ban garbage. Stuff I put up in 2010 around pool deck and rails all rotten inside out. I have treated wood from 1980 from hurricane irene damage that I built my lower decks out of planed good to go. Just don't breath it arsenic. Everything now a days is crap "NWO" is trying to kill everything.
@whitacrebespoke7 жыл бұрын
Boys Rback take it your in the US? I thought they were still using the CCA preservative over there? Preservative is a joke now especially here in UK as Europe banned all the chemical that worked and now there is issues getting the chemical not to leach out the timber. Totally useless
