I finished the project I did with my G21 Day bag, it was an amazing and exciting experienced seeing the transformation that happened. I did not video my project but the end result is amazing. I followed every single pointers in your list and I used the Fiebing's Balm to seal the dye. No dye transfer at all, I also put my apple leather conditioner to finish it all. The leather remains soft and supple! Thanks!

I didn’t catch the reason to use both dye products, the Feebings and Tarrago. Was that the intention to start with, or was it necessary because you had the “shine” in some areas after the first dye layer?
@AuthenblissityMain5 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, that was in the blog post I read. I wasn't sure why we needed both either, but after the first (penetrating) dye, the leather had a bit of a dull brown/copper/bronze look to it. The second (self-shine) dye made the leather pitch black and shiny.

@AuthenblissityMain3 жыл бұрын
Hello! I haven't experienced any of the dye rubbing off. There has been a tiny bit of "fading" along the threads but not on the actual leather itself. My bag used to be green and you can see the green thread in parts.

@antoine gabrielle - i used the small brush near the fabric/zippers but since the fabric on my bag was black, i didn't have to be too careful. for any other colour fabric, i would have bought a smaller stiffer brush to tackle those areas.

What a nice tutorial! Thank you for putting it up. I am going to dye one of my older leather bags now. As far as the dye transferring on to your hands, there is a spritz on leather finish that I have used on my riding boots and leather saddles that gives a smooth feel and stops the conditioners and dyes from bleeding through. It might work on the handles for you. It is from a company called Leather Therapy. I've used their products for several years and have had good luck with them.

+bagobeans not sure why i can't reply directly to your comment but thank you for your comments. i don't think you've previously asked me about dye transfer. if you had, i would have answered you as i have a few other people in the YT comments. anyway, if you had read the rest of the comments, you would have seen that after i got a chance to use my bag, i did reply to a few people re. the dye on the handles transferring to my hands when my hands were freshly lotioned. there has still been no colour transfer from the shoulder strap or onto my clothing - and i think the white dustbag would be a relatively good indication of potential colour transfer onto clothing items (especially seeing as how i had not used the bag enough to provide any other information at that point in time when the question was asked of me).

I wish I had seen this video before attempting to dye my old Ferragamo bag black a couple years ago. No matter how many Fiebings coat I would layer on, it would still have an unflattering brownish hue and was never a true black. After awhile I decided i disliked the color, completely regretted ever trying to dye it in the first place as I preferred the old color over the new and so I tossed it. :( I am however consider dying my beloved taupe Proenza Schouler PS11 to black (more versatile) and I'm going to use the steps provided in this video. Hopefully it'll bring it back to life and make it look new like it did with your Balenciaga. Thanks for posting this! :)

I want to try this on a Michael Kors purse that A friend gave me a few years ago. It's leather and it's the same color as your white bag but has a lot of discoloration that I don't want to mess with as far as attempting to restore the light color. It's been sitting in the back of my closet and I don't use it for the fact that I am not the best person to own anything white 😁. My question is when you do the top of the bag where there's a zipper, how to prevent the color from leaking into the lining? Besides the fact that I'll be careful by not over-saturating in that area, I want to try not to stain the tan inner lining. This will be a practice one though.. If this were to happen on the white leather MK bag I want to try this on, it wouldn't matter to me if the inside got stained from the dye since it's an old purse anyways. I'm asking in case I come across a light-colored bag in the future where I don't want to mess up the lighter inner lining. I'm sure I could purchase some fabric dye if that were to happen though. You are a great KZbinr and this is the best video. You are saving the lives of many leather bags LOL all leather bags deserve a second chance, right?
@AuthenblissityMain5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! :) My bag had a black lining so I didn't have to be too careful with the dye getting on the lining. I'm not sure how to prevent it from happening other than being careful. Perhaps you can use a smaller brush in that area and take more time with the edges. There may also be some sort of fabric protector you can use, but unfortunately I don't have experience in this. When I was dyeing my bag, I used PurseForum and blogs as resources, so perhaps there is some information there? Good luck and please let me know how it goes!

Hi there! I haven't had the same issue - even during these hot and humid days, when I use the strap on my bag, I have no issue with the dye transferring to my skin. I think the self-shine dye helps with this. Just make sure to buff it really well to take off the excess dye.

Just curious...is there a reason you chose Fiebings penetrating dye instead of Tarrago penetrating dye? Thanks :)
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
there wasn't really a good reason... i read that the tarrago penetrating dye used to be a different formulation (not alcohol based) but now both are alcohol based. i mainly chose fiebing's because it's a bigger bottle (i didn't know how much i would need) and also because the ebay store i was looking at didn't have the tarrago penetrating dye for sale. i think they would work similarly but perhaps the tarrago penetrating dye doesn't have the issue with the metallic sheen. hope that helps! :)

Wow, you did such a good job with dying it. I am thinking about buying a used Balenciaga bag in a color that I don't really like (because it's cheap) and then dye it black. But I was wondering if the leather dye makes the feel of the bag different? I mean, does it seem a little less smooshy and soft than before, or is it completely the same touch?
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
thank you! :) my bag hadn't really gotten to the super smooshy stage yet but i found the texture didn't change much after dyeing it. i think the key is to do very thin layers of dye. only issue i've had with my bag is that the colour on the handles will sometimes transfer to my hands, especially if my hands are freshly lotioned.

I am wanting to touch up my green bag and have found the perfect similar shade in the Tarrago colour chart but the 'greens' on the Fiebing chart are quite darker. Any suggestions on what to do? You deserve real kuddos for producing such a wonderful, professionally done, video! With the kind of quality work that you put into that as well as your bag I think you could be trusted to do anything well. BTW, I don't recall you mentioning why you had to dye the bag with 2 different dyes. Would you explain? Thanks!
@AuthenblissityMain9 жыл бұрын
+freedommascot thanks so much! the first dye is a penetrating dye, which sinks into the leather; however, it is not jet black but rather leaves a bit of a brownish/metallic hue to the bag. the 2nd dye is a self-shine dye, which sits on top of the leather. if you use this one by itself, i read that it could potentially flake off as it is not absorbed by the leather; however, it is jet black.

This may be dumb, but is there a way to "clean" leather instead? I only own one purse (blue) and it is getting a bit dirty since I have had it for about a year now, it's a gorgeous blue though so I would be sad to dye it. I keep using it anyway but would love to spruce it up a bit. I think your bag turned out great! Perhaps I will eventually do that if I can't figure out an alternative.
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
thanks so much, zoe! :) yes, there is a way to clean leather instead of dyeing it... i've never done it before but there is a lot of information on the purse forum on how to clean leather bags or to restore the original colour. i think the method depends on the type of leather so be sure to do lots of research before trying it on your bag... you could also take or send it to a leather specialist to be cleaned but again the quality may vary. let me know how it turns out!
@zoedanielle56510 жыл бұрын
petitepearstyle Good to know! I will have to do some research. Although "leather specialist" sounds expensive and although my purse was a really big purchase to me, I think it was only about $100 (it's a Fossil Explorer Minibag in bright blue) so it might be worth trying to do clean it how I can and eventually buying another one. (I also made the mistake of googling your bag :P I don't know much about hand bags! )

Zoë Danielle i just saw this comment! sometimes i don't get the google+ comments delivered to my inbox... not sure why that is. hehe i'm a bit of a handbag fanatic... it's definitely where i splurge the most. there may be some tips on how to clean leather with more household-type products but be sure to read a lot of reviews to get the pros/cons. i'm always nervous about ruining my favourite items, no matter what the cost. good luck!! :)

bagobeans thank you for your comments. i don't think you've previously asked me about dye transfer. if you had, i would have answered you as i have a few other people in the YT comments. anyway, if you had read the rest of the comments, you would have seen that after i got a chance to use my bag, i did reply to a few people re. the dye on the handles transferring to my hands when my hands were freshly lotioned. there has still been no colour transfer from the shoulder strap or onto my clothing - and i think the white dustbag would be a relatively good indication of potential colour transfer onto clothing items (especially seeing as how i had not used the bag enough to provide any other information at that point in time when the question was asked of me).

Hii Instead of bag can I dye my leather jacket bye following the same steps???

Do you think that this process would work to dye a light bag a light color? Or would it be best to always go darker?

Thanks for the informative video, hanging with book inside is good idea. I do think it's important to let 1st coat to dry completely, to avoid sticky surface. Great idea on hardware, thank you. I like that u left the accessories undyed, looks great!

Hey, just wondering can you use only the Tarago Dye without the Fiebeng's Dye ? if ur still on here to answer thanks!!
@AuthenblissityMain9 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Madison if you would like to go with just one dye, i'd suggest using the fiebing's as it's a penetrating dye... the tarrago self-shine dye just sits on top of the leather (does not penetrate) and i've read that flaking can occur. hope that helps!

Hi, this was a really informative and concise. And brave! Can I ask, how did you ensure the dye did not get on the lining or on the areas where you kept the pale green color? I'm considering dying my brown Mackage jacket to black but I don't want to ruin the hardware or the lining. Thanks in advance!
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
thank you very much! i just applied the dye carefully on the inside leather... it helped that the lining of my bag was black. as for the hardware, i found i could take it off with rubbing alcohol after the fact, but someone mentioned it was difficult for her to remove the dye afterward... you could tape your hardware to help protect it from the dye. hope this helps!

I have Orange Balenciaga small city, and I had it professional dye to black in Thailand. They did a really bad job partly of the dye came off after couple time I use the bag. After I watched your VDO I think I want to dye it myself. Do you think it will be ok if I dye it a second time? And this time do you think I can dye it in Yellow? or should I go with black?
@AuthenblissityMain7 жыл бұрын
i'm sorry, i'm not sure. i'm thinking you might have to remove the dye first? i'm also thinking yellow would be difficult but i've only ever tried black so i'd recommend doing some more research before trying it. i hope it works out!

How did you do the leather edges? You know how it has kind of rubber edges....adapted the color without wiped off?
@AuthenblissityMain8 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Ra i just used a smaller brush for the edges and haven't run into any issues with the color rubbing off.

thank you! i didn't apply any leather conditioner. :)

Did you dye the fabric lining inside also? If so, how? As far as how the bag's holding up, has the dye flaked off or bled at all? If it were to get wet from rain or something, would it bleed?
@AuthenblissityMain8 жыл бұрын
i didn't dye the fabric lining - it was already black so didn't really notice if the dye got on it. i would suggest looking into fabric dye if you are planning to go that route. the bag is holding up great, no flaking at all. sometimes the dye from the handles does transfer to my hands but i haven't noticed any other colour transfer. i am careful with this bag though - i don't wear it with light colours and i've never worn it in the rain (only drizzle - with no issues).

Can I use the same dye on a vinyl bag? I have one that is not real leather but it's not a cheap bag and it's still in great shape. I love it but it's white and it needs to be dyed a darker color because I've tried to clean it but nothing's working. Will this same dye work for vinyl too? You did a great job on yours!!
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
thank you! the dyes that i used are specifically for leather (although the tarrago dye says it can also be used on canvas and imitation leather)... i'm not sure about vinyl so i would recommend doing some more research online. if you search it on google, you should be able to find some suggestions/recommendations. good luck! :)

I had great success with my Balenciaga city bag! Just wondering if you have a way to clean the inside of the bag (since some of the dye definitely got in while I was dyeing)?
@AuthenblissityMain7 жыл бұрын
i've sorry, i haven't really had to clean the inside. maybe try a quick google search to see if there are any tips out there... i'm sure there will be something useful...

This may sound stupid, but would this work on faux leather?
@AuthenblissityMain9 жыл бұрын
wakeupsheepleppl i just checked the boxes for the dye and the fiebing's dye can only be used on genuine leather; however, the tarrago dye can be used on synthetic leather. hope that helps!

When you dye or paint leather, is it not soft anymore? I love painting my leather bags but I find the downside is that they no longer have the soft buttery feeling anymore. Is this inevitable and just something you have to decide you can live with?
@AuthenblissityMain7 жыл бұрын
mine is still soft... i didn't really notice a change in the texture after dyeing it...

hey I was curious if the dye is still holding or is it scuffing off? I was thinking of buying a white one and dyeing it red, but I'm sceptical it wont look good
@AuthenblissityMain8 ай бұрын
HI! The dye is holding well on the bag itself but the strap has a bit of scuffing and I can see a bit of the original colour at the edges. I use the strap on other bags though so it experiences a lot more wear.

hello, id like to ask what your thoughts are on just using one dye and not bothering with a second one. The reason I ask is because I'm looking to dye a bag red and Im afraid of ordering two colors that are not the same shade of red and then having chaos as i go through the layering of paint. what are your thoughts?
@AuthenblissityMain9 жыл бұрын
+2b4Mustafa i think it would be ok to just use one dye, especially if you're worried about the colors matching. i'd suggest using the penetrating dye as the self-shine tends to sit on the leather and may flake if used on its own. if you do end up trying it, please let me know how it goes!

Did it ever color transfer on clothes?
@trurock110 жыл бұрын
I wanted to use this method for dying a black jacket I got from a thrift store. Has your bag bled any since then it is the dye set in well so that it doesn't bleed onto anything?
@AuthenblissityMain10 жыл бұрын
the colour from the handles does transfer onto my hands... fortunately, there has not been any transfer from my bag onto clothing; however, i do wear a lot of dark clothing for the most part. i store my bag in a white dust bag and there has been no colour transfer. that being said, i'd recommend doing some research as you may find some additional tips and tricks on dyeing leather jackets. please let me know how it turns out!
