DIY How To Sand and Polish Aluminum Wheels / Rims

I recently quit my job polishing wheels for a company, however we mostly dealt with smaller wheels. Only every once in awhile we'd get some of those. We sanded down the wheel using 350 grit sand paper, fixing what we could with welding, afterwards we used shakers to 'sand' the rims more with beads, then we used what you showed in the video. Only difference is we used yellow pads then white pads for final touch. We always had trouble on some rims where they would not polish up, I'm assuming it was due to the beads not being purged and refreshed in the 'fine' shaker. (Boss always wanted to save money, heh) I'm happy that I'm out of that job now~ Boss never provided proper safety equipment, and breathing that stuff in definitely wasn't good. Most days I would go home covered in compound and aluminum.

I gotta get one of your kits and start doing this. I’ve done aluminum motorcycle parts on a baldor stationary polisher using Tripoli and white rouge and of course different pads with each product and got decent results but nothing as spectacular as what you’re turning out with the hand held equipment and obviously better compounds than I was using.your finished product is mind blowing stuff

UPDATE .. I ALREADY HAD A POLISH KIT WITH 12 PADS AMD A DEWALT 3500 RPM MACHINE So I went and got a orbital polisher and some 80-120 grit. Holy hell. It takes for absloute ever to sand ONE Dam wheel... It took 3 hours to sand one wheel. Both sides and rough polish the wheel ON BOTH SIDES!. I just gave up after one wheel it took so long. I was grey head to toe. And just filty. It made a massive mess all around me. To any other diy weekend warrior : I would highly recommend just paying someone to do it or buy new wheels. This is a very time consuming task and dirty. Way way dirty. IT MAKES A MESS LIKE YOU COULDNT IMAGINE !

Solid results there! Couple questions, couldnt quite tell how you finished out around the valve stem? Im assuming the DA wouldnt get under the stem? Also what do you recommend if I wanted to polish inside the "rat holes", hand sanding and some sort of cone polish wheel? Thank you for your time.

I watched your video you did a good job. I have been sanding my wheels and I have a question maybe you can answer. I’m using the 600 grit and I have some spots the look great and some spots that have a kind of white look to them. And when polished the white spots are darker and don’t have the mirror reflection the rest of the wheel does. These spots are raised in a curve on the wheel. Did I over sand those spots , can that even be done? Or need to sand a little more till I get the desired look. These wheels were originally machined and not polished.

it's really hard to answer a question like this without seeing.... but with that said if you're only sanding with 600, you need to go step by step with lower grits to get better results

You can safely start at 320 if it’s taking forever to get the lines go down to 180, then 320, 400, 600 and 1000 and machine polish

subscribed! I wish I new that I only had to go up to 600. I've been trying to restore aluminum wheels. and took it to 5000 grit then used California purple polish.. I'm happy with the result but it's still about glazy... can I go back down to 400 then 600 then polish? note Ive been wet sanding throughout the process.any difference in wet sanding or not? there's no dust.Any help will be much Appreciated. 👍

Ya sanding to 600 works fine, I usually use an 800 or 1000 grit after my 600 just to make the polishing step a bit easier… takes a couple more mins but saves more on your polishing. As for dry or wet… I sand dry cause I don’t like the mess of the water, and the aluminum gets sll caked up black… but you’re right Definitely less dust!! Thanks for watching

I just got some old slots for a restoration I am doing. Rims have some scratches and dings. I am currently using 80 grit to get everything smooth. Am I on the right track?

Personally I don’t go lower then 120 but nothing wrong with 80 grit just remember to not cheat when moving up in grit and make sure every step removes the prior sander marks! Hope that made sense!

If you have experience a rotary it totally fine and much faster… but with that said faster with no experience can be very bad… aluminum is very soft and it doesn’t take much to chew grooves in the pieces you’re working on. So make sure you’re always moving, constant flow and keep your pad as flat as possible, the more you use the edges the faster it chews. I’d practice on flat surfaces first. Hope this helps

I have super dirty truck rims similar to your as dirty as yours but I don't know with what sanding grit I should start . Is 80g is too much ? Or should I start with 120 ? Then work up from there ????

80 is too low imo, some guys use it but I find your working harder to get the low grit sander marks out. I start with 180 99% of the time when it’s rough. Then 320, 400, 600 and ready for polishing if your using a high speed then I go 1 step further to 1000 and then polish.

I recently started polishing my wheels. I used the brown rouge and then the green chrome rouge. But when polishing I don't get the mirror finish. It has a lot of back stuff on the wheel. Do I need to sand the wheel? Am I doing something wrong. After your first cut you already has a mirror shine but it didnt work that way for me.

Sanding is definitely key to a clear mirror shine, quality compound is a close 2nd. What speed are you polishing at?

K np sanding is key, then I’d use 439t green menzerna to cut at 3500rpm, a second cut might be needed (same product and speed) if there’s still sander marks. Then finishing with menzerna 480blf blue at 2200-3000 rpm

It doesn’t fill them, it removes them but I don’t stop at 320... you need 400, 600 and 1000 grit then you’re ready for polishing

+Jackie Carpenter depends on what you’re using to polish... if you’re going to “only sand” for your “machine finish” then it depends on the look that you want. The higher in grit you go the more of a sheen reflection you will get. Hope that made sense.

The outer part of the rim yes, if the rim is not too far gone you can use sos on the inner part and polish by hand or machine, sand the outer part and polish. If the rim is too far gone it needs to be taken off to do it properly. Hope that made sense 😎

A few weeks!? I get mine done twice a year, touch them up myself and get the truck washed every week and NO ALUMINIUM BRIGHTNER!!! My truck looks great year round. Upkeep of aluminium isn't for lazy people, you can't expect to get this level of work done and then sit back and not do any touch up maintenance.

vrojas25 My first tank took me about 14 hours. You learn a ton on your first of any part you polish. But make sure you take your time in the beginning. Speed comes with time. And learning from great videos like this.

I’m unsure how this is a ‘how to’ video. I like your videos Dennis, as I do Evans, but there’s not really a how to video for sanding. Yes you’ve explained what grits you use, and the other possibilities but it’s not a how to…it’s how I choose to do video. There’s nothing explaining what’s going through your mind, your visual cues when to change grits or what you identify as a tell to change the paper out due to it clogging etc. All of these ‘how to’ videos do is explain the process but not how you achieve it….

The average individual do not have rims that big. A buffing wheel that and sander that size would not do well on the average wheel.

+Nigel R trucks rims are 22.5 and 24.5... some exceptions in heavy hauler trailers but that’s about it. This method is not used on too many car rims because yes they are too small and have more intricate areas that require different tools. Thanks for watching

I beg to differ, the "average" trucker numbers around 9 million in the United States and most people running aluminium wheels on a car or pickup truck could care less or are too lazy to polish their wheels. So, seeing as Dennis and other professionals are polishing 99% semi truck wheels and fuel tanks, I'd say those are the average customers
