A complete look from start to finish on how to install a duck pond/impoundment water control structure. PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO IF YOU ENJOY IT :) Hiring an excavator would have cost about $5,500 to dig these and install the Gates. I did this myself (you could rent a mini excavator for a weekend or two) for the time and fuel. The gates cost about $430 for both. Hi Joe, ponds are going to be awesome. I'm excited for you, and I'm sure all the hard work you've put in will have you hunting them in no time. I'm not sure if Can's will use the ponds but I'll bet they will love the lake 😉. Well done

Thank you! I appreciate it. Hope you are right :) We are not right in a flyway, but on the fringes of one. From all that I've read, you can 'pull them in' with an awesome plot, just not sure if mine will be big enough, but its a fun journey either way!

I swear I need a "Joe" to help me get this house ready to sell.....I don't suppose he's available for rent?.....I didn't think so....Oh well, I guess I'll just have to do the best I can do by myself. Your "everyman" videos give me ideas (my wife says way too many) for our future home back in our beloved South Carolina. Take care and keep 'em comin'!!!

Great video! A bit of drone footage is a nice touch on all your videos. Can't wait for updates through season, (try) not to over hunt it this year so the ducks will come back & bring there buddies next year! I imagine your will have geese landing in the pond, and will hang out around the damn on the damn and in the field behind it

I wouldn't be able to hold out, not enough self-control lol. How much did it cost you, for the whole impoundment setup including the plumbing from pond to impoundment? How many hours of excavator and skidsteer hours did it take you?(estimate) How much do you estimate the cost would have been for the whole impoundment to be 100% by someone else? Can you water these plots at anytime from plumbing from the pond?
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
The cost for the 2 flood gates was like 400 to 500, don't recall exact amount. The pond fill pipe and valve setup Was I think nearly $1,000. But that is high end stuff, coal mine stuff that won't break or leak like cheap pvc stuff. You could do that part for a few hundred easy if you wanted to. You could also just siphon with gravity if you wanted to since the duck ponds are lower than the big ponds (then you wouldn't have to spend anything for the water valves). My estimate for the 2 duck ponds is easily $5,000 to $6,000. The excavator estimated 4,000 to 5,000 just to dig them and build the dams, not including installing the gates. This project alone has repaid 10 to 15% of the brand new excavator cost :)

Good luck with the ducks. My experience (across the Ohio River from you) is the ducks fly right on past in the fall and winter, but really use the flooded ponds with food on the way BACK north....unfortunately long AFTER duck season. If that happens to you, put up a couple wood duck boxes near your ponds and give them some nesting opportunities.
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
That would stink I guess.. I've got lots of wood ducks already that hit all of my small watering holes. So I imagine I'll have lots more of them with a good food source. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can bring some in during season! I don't need a ton of birds, just some to stop in to know that my fiendish plan works! lol

Kapper how do the 2x4's seal watertight? Being horizontal I would think as the wood swelled up it would just lift the board above it and never get a truly tight seal. Are they tongue and groove?
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
they don't need to be tongue and groove, just regular 2x4's. I thought the same thing, but the company that makes them has been doing this a long time and I've seen these gates on duck hunting properties so they should work. Maybe its because there really isn't a lot of hydraulic pressure with such shallow water? We'll see this fall!! :)

Water run off fills the pond that is planted with duck food. The duck pond gate is to control pond level and allow clean out of nutrients to irrigate in a drought. Fertilizer. Electric atv is the roving blind..snap snap or bang bang and utube screws any firearms vlogers by removing them. Granola..
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
Duck love shallow water ponds with good food. This combination is not that common for them. When you have a flooded food source, ducks will love it. Have you ever seen ducks geese next to a highway in a flooded corner of a farm field? So, I built 2 'duck ponds' if you will. Now that water control gate is in, but there is no water. I will soon plant some of their favorite foods, like millet mixes and oats. The food grows all summer and fall. Then during the fall I will pump water from the big pond into the duck ponds and close the water control gate from this video. So the goal will be to 'flood' the duck pond that is full of food. It should attract ducks. I will probably hunt a little, but we also enjoy just seeing the many different bird and animal species, so seeing ducks flying out our back door would be awesome...thanks.

The young black crappie are a soft fined fish easyer for the other fish to eat than bluegill. Remove any unwanted things that may be in ie old team rubbish. People sunk lots of gabbage in ponds like washine machine heck even stolen cars. I do not think there will be a need for much to move the fish soft landing net and scope them in to the big bucket of your tractor full of water. You can easy build a wind driven airator seen you have the still, should do one any way. Helps cool and airate that

Kapper, I just bought 2 of these same risers, mine are a little taller though and are 18" outlets. How did you end of liking these? If I recall I believe you may have done away with them as you said they may have leaked? Please let me know, and thing I need to look out for? Installing them in new impoundment next week...
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
I did not like them. They are tough to seal the way the box ties in at the front. I recommend putting the pipe in first, compacting the pipe then attaching the box. And yes, they leaked like mad, no matter what I did. I even tried tongue and groove. If you have like a permanent water source flowing in it, it wouldn't be a big deal, but if you are collecting rain water, it will lower the level. Good luck!

Kapper if you pumped the water from the old side to the new side....you could really see how many fish and of what size they are. Move them, and then with this dry weather you got you can fish scape that side and make it deeper. You will need to Fertilize the new side to get green water, that's food. Then you could pump it over, you will need airation because of no flow and no weeds. Would be great to know ever spot to cast to. Did you get the fish stocking site I told you about. Best perch.

@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
Thats a good idea, but I think would be a major project, where i might need paid assistance? The $$ well is dry right now for sure. But you've got me thinking about it..... I guess you'd pump it down and net the fish a few at a time? I would think you'd have to get them down to a tiny pool to net them, and then that could really risk them dying, especially the big ones?
@muxxor9492
@muxxor9492 7 жыл бұрын
Kapper you wouldn't even need to pump, since the bottom of the old lake is higher than the new lake you can easily get a siphon going with a 4" corrugated pipe it will move ALOT of water quickly once the siphon is running. Search youtube for 'how to start pond siphon 10 minutes' I tried to link the video but comments with links get flag as spam I think.

Just had a fish biologist here last night to discuss that and other options. We are going to stick with our original plan as is because of too many variables to try to drain the old side and move the fish. I'm trying to set up a fish shock to survey whats in the old pond to see if there are any non desirables in there (rock bass or crappie).

New side that is currently stagnate, will increase the number of fish that live in there and through the winter with no planes getting started no oxygen if iced over at all. Winter kill they call it can also occur from weed die off and too many fish. You dig a deep trench then as you pump the fish will go to that trench for its lane of water easy to count and check their health you could tag and track growth rates most likly stunnted from the ones I have seen you catch just bass and gill is old

Kapper that will not help you in the ways I will list. Stopping the sides from washing in at every rain. You will see exactly how deep. Will not fall in on that side because of long been set up. Exact fish count, electro survey is a average of fish they get then it is multiplied by surface acres. Not showing all fish. You can then deepen and fish scapegoat the old side, I know you want to. See if you have the good green crayfish not the bad red ones. Crappie and perch will give you awesome food

Would love to see some muscovy ducks in a hog panel, lined with Gopher screen coop. Dig a pond in coop. Add wood chips. Perfect soil for a garden or to use on plots. They get let out in the am..come back in the pm. Easy to spot trapped predators. We had a dozen that flew and loved the pond in our horse arena. Lots of good dodo for compost building. Look at Richard Perkins channel and make bio char out of trash wood. Anchor seal the ends of the hardwood..that pays for a warrior or Lucas Saw Mill. The eggs and new ducklings big bonus. ? Issues with wild to tame food safety? Will tame ducks attack the game birds..? A double 4x 16 panel doubled..span 20x16. Never clean the pen..build it with leaves..grass..chips..scraps..bounty from the food plots. Run live feed cams for game, predators. Quail..lots of tired hunters that buy birds to take home after a hard party. Lol. Could you lease small game hunts? Pheasant also would be great..fox creams them in Wis..back home. Fun stuff. Great Job..note..a yard of compost..100.00. Plus delivery charge..Keep bills in binder in truck. Use non gmo feed..guineas free range attack tics. Hope your getting the rain north of you.

@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
At some point we might try some chickens or ducks, but the predators would probably devour them pretty dang quick.. We already have quail. I talked to a game bird farm and he said nothing pen raised will survive long in the wild. Pheasants have the best chance, and he said probably they live a month or two. But I like the tame duck idea.... might have to look into that.. But the queen does not like all the poop all over the place, especially since they'd hand out in the clear spot, which is our recreation spot!
@eddeetz493
@eddeetz493 7 жыл бұрын
Kapper Outdoors ..sell live quail. Got to be a cell phone release app from hidden nest to hold bird to get Hawkeye a shot. Quail eggs are in demand. If birds were used to perfect container while being raised, it would be a great product to catch then release in habitat. A guard dog raised in same pen to bond would help. Move him to field with birds released after the hunt. Could be closed to protect nesting birds and one day reload with smart survivors that improve the genetics. Water police in California would empty a pen on you. Love it

So these metal water shut off mechanisms did not work for you at all. Thinking of ordering one, but don’t have constant water inflowing like you’ve commented. Did you find another brand or just have a place now that you can not get to flood cause bad mechanism don’t work.
@kapperoutdoors

I could not get them to work, so I switched to an old school method, but you can't really adjust the level as well. I put in an 8 inch pipe at the base of the dam to keep it dry all year to plant the plot. Then when I flood it I put a pipe balloon in it to close it off and fill it to the level I want. Much more reliable for sure. Good luck.

The big one is still there. I did find out (several viewers thought this) that it appears that particular site is embedding my videos, and the 'play' if you will still happens on youtube. Still not sure about that though, because when I've played a couple no commercials showed on them, which they should have if it really did 'play' on youtube. I've also filed several copyright complaints via youtube for other youtubers using my videos, those will get taken down, I've done that before. But I don't think I can do anything about the copycat youtube site.. And I'm doubtful they will do anything either....
